Utah schools offer healthier drinks – good start

Wasatch Front and Ogden Schools have decided to keep “non-diet” sodas out of public schools in vending machines. Vendors will be supplying “healthier” drinks with lower caloric content instead.

Under the agreement, diet soda that contains less than 10 calories per serving would still be sold in public high schools but only unsweetened juice, low-fat milk and water would be sold in elementary and middle schools.

This is a good start, but diet sodas contain aspartame and caffeine – two drugs that can potentially have serious side effects…..especially on developing children.
See information from the Aspartame Toxicity Info Center and FAQ’s on caffeine.

Greg’s move

Things seem to be going very well with Greg’s move to Maryland. All his belongings arrived o.k. about a week after he got there. He has secured a manager’s job with Taco Bell in Frederick where he is living and will be making about $10,000 more salary than he did here – with benefits. Of course the cost of living is higher there than here, but it’s still good for someone who doesn’t have a high school diploma.

He’s been looking for an apartment – one that must allow dogs – to no avail. Seems every place he has contacted has none available, so he’s still got that loose end to tie up.

He is still negotiating with Carmen what to do about the baby situation. There is talk of her going there for a visit in June. We’ll see. I called her last night and she said she was doing well except for the nausea and fatigue – both normal for the first trimester.

The Word’s Out Now

So my son told his grandparents and other family members about his impending fatherhood. He told me he still feels like everyone will consider him a big disappointment – and I don’t know why because they don’t and, in fact, everyone is being really supportive. I hope he will get over this feeling soon.

Meanwhile, I will be accompanying Carmen to her next doctor’s visit on May 17! I dropped off several bags of food and personal items for her today, along with a book that I made on nutrition in pregnancy.

ovarian cysts

I just found out that my 16-year-old daughter, who lives very far away from me, spent 5 hours in the hospital today as a result of severe pain. Tests revealed she had a ruptured ovarian cyst.

!!!!!

She had been to the doctor for her annual several weeks ago and had complained of the pain she had been experiencing. The doctor indicated it might be her appendix????

I’m not sure why they didn’t test for this. Now I am extremely worried.

Baby update

O.k., I just talked to the mother of my possible future grandchild and she told me that the baby is in her uterus, just not where the doctor said it should be placed. More bloodwork was taken to today, the results of which will come back on Monday or Tuesday. If hormone levels are significantly higher than when the first tests were done, things will be “looking good”. If not, we’ll see what the next step is.

So now a few more days of waiting.

Greg – Day 4

Greg made it to his destination early today. Whew! He is resting today and already has a job interview for next Tuesday.

He also found out today that the mother of his baby went to the doctor again today who was not optimistic about the pregnancy – no heartbeat (yet) and suspicion that it might be an ectopic pregnancy. I called her and left a message for her to get back to me. I anxiously await.

Greg – Days 2 and 3…….and a bombshell

Yesterday Greg made it to Columbia, Missouri – about an hour east of St. Louis. He drove about 11 hours. Everything went fine.

Today he drove from there to Columbus, Ohio – about a 7 hour drive. He is now only about 5 hours away from his destination of Frederick, Maryland. His dog, Sokrateez is doing just fine.

Now for the bombshell.

Greg told me yesterday before he left for his travelling for the day that he had just found out that he is going to be a father.

(music playing comes to a screeching halt – like a record scratching).

Greg decided, for reasons that I still cannot understand, about 6 months ago, to move to Maryland – where he did a lot of his younger growing up. Up until he left, he maintained a relationship with his girlfriend and they both were prepared for this life change of him moving (I still don’t understand, but didn’t make a big deal out of this. I think they were the cutest couple).

So now Greg is faced with being a father and is working out with the mother what they will do. The mother (whom I adore) will have the child. How they raise the child is yet to be determined. The mother took over my son’s manager job at the fast food restaurant where she (and where Greg did) work. So she has insurance.

She is only (gasp!) 18.

And now I’m going to be (another gasp!) a grandmother.

To be continued….

Greg – continued, day 1

So Greg ended up coming back home two more times today because the pet groomer took longer than he thought. But he finally left the valley around 1:30pm. It’s now about 6:10pm so I’m assuming he’s somewhere close to Laramie Wyoming.

I forgot to mention in my last post that this trip is a really big deal for Greg. No, I mean really BIG. Greg suffers not only from the effects of Tourette’s Syndrome, but also from the effects of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder AND from Anxiety of the Panic Disorder kind.

This is a huge step. Which adds to my worries even more than normal.
