Green Party Presidential Candidate on Utah’s Ballot

Sep 03, 2008 by Elizabeth Ziegler

(KCPW News) This may be the reddest state in the nation, but Cynthia McKinney just made
it a little greener. The Green Party presidential candidate came to the Capitol Building
this morning to add her name to the Utah ballot. Regardless of her chances of winning the
White House seat, she says it’s important nonetheless for Green candidates to run.

“We believe in our country, and we believe in the value of participating in the political
process,” McKinney says. “We participate in politics because we want our values reflected
in public policy. And to the extent that we can provide voters choice so that the voters
can vote their values, then our system is much stronger, and our country is much
stronger.”

If you have a tattoo, you can’t become a Bountiful City Employee

While almost nothing surprises me, particularly in Utah, I still can’t believe this:

City goes further than most in banning body art and many piercings
By María Villaseñor
The Salt Lake Tribune

BOUNTIFUL – If that tribal tattoo peeks out of your collar, don’t bother applying to work for Bountiful City.
The City Council has voted to ban new employees from sporting head, face, neck or hand tattoos – currently tattooed staffers are exempt from the new rule.
Officials in this Davis County municipality said the ban – which also requires male workers to take out any piercings – didn’t arise from previous incidents, but rather is “anticipatory and preventative” as trends change.
“We want people to look professionally . . . so people will feel comfortable interacting with our employees,” said City Manager Tom Hardy.
….while a ban on offensive or gang-related ink is understandable to Bountiful resident Steve Richards, the rest of the prohibition is “a joke.”
“What are we in now, 2008?” he asked, adding “we’ve come a long way since things were so judgmental.”
Hardy said the policy is likely “generational” and could be obsolete in 30 years.

Huh? Isn’t that admitting to age discrimination? And maybe even discrimination based on religion (in some cases there may be religions whose members adorn tattoos is part of its custom….)?

“Some people don’t feel comfortable with interacting with people that are that way,” he said of tattoos and male piercings. “And some would say it looks unprofessional.”

Some people? Isn’t that less than most people?

Don’t get me wrong – I do support a dress code policy in some employment situations – but a total ban?

This is clearly an issue of generational discrimination. I feel that Bountiful City could have spent more time developing a more strict dress code policy – and should have involved a diverse committee, including employees and members of the public, to develop such.

Save Me From My Senator – Boot Buttars From Office!

A new site has popped up in the Blogosphere:

Save Me From My Senator – Chris Buttars Scares Me.

It was started as a result of dire frustration by a constituent of his. It’s chock full of really useful information, including
101 Reasons to Get Rid of Chris Buttars, Tools for Citizens to use in the Fight, news and blog articles, and lots more.

I live just outside of District 10, so I can’t help vote him out, but I sure can do all I can to get others in his district to do just that.

Cup of Joe Will Open – Temporary New Home

This report is offered by A Cup of Joe Events Coordinator, Eileen McCabe:

Rosemary Winters of the Salt Lake Tribune called both Kristy and I yesterday and posted the following article:

http://www.sltrib.com/ci_10094052?IADID=Search-www.sltrib.com-www.sltrib.com

The Office Manager for Evergreene saw the article yesterday when a shorter version was posted, saw the quote “I?ve got food rotting in there,” and called Kristy to arrange a time for her to move everything out.  So Kristy will be spared the hassle of waiting for a court motion to go through its channels, taking perhaps 2 weeks. Kristy is trying to work out the logistics and it will probably be in the next couple of days.

The second piece of good news is that Bob Evans of Rimini Coffee, Sugarhouse Coffee and Café Marmalade, who has been enormously supportive of Kristy, has offered for her to set up shop in Baxter’s Café at 1615 S. State, for either a short or long-term arrangement.  For starters, she will have full weekends starting 6PM on Friday, since Baxter’s currently is not open on weekends. She may take over the entire lease from Baxter’s. I visited Baxter’s last night, and am very optimistic.  The space is only slightly smaller that the Artspace space, it has wonderful lighting and acoustics and a friendly aura. It also has a patio out front, and lots of lawn (anyone care to run through the sprinklers?)

Poetry is back on for Saturday night!!! Same time (8:30), new place, 1615 S. State St, on the east side of the road between the high school and the community college.  There is a huge billboard on the south side of the front parking lot that has an enormous motorcycle and 100 MPH in huge letters.  The front parking lot is very small, so park in the community college parking lot.

With that in mind, as Kristy’s event’s coordinator, I’d like to invite everyone to bless the new space and participate in the grand opening of “A Cup of Joe 2.0.”  Kristy has already booked music for Friday night, a group she had booked for the old space for the same date.

Cup of Joes goes on because of the hearts and souls of those who have shared its energy.  As I said in the article, we go on because of our community, regardless of the physical space we occupy.

Please forward this noticel far and wide, call or text folks who do not have email, or who access it infrequently.  We will also post a sign on the doors at Artspace.

Springmeyer/Valdez Gov slate in Utah

In the absence of any Green Party candidates in Utah, I have decided to support the Utah Governor/Lt. Governor candidate team of Bob Springmeyer and Josie Valdez. On his facebook page, Bob identifies his political views as Fiscally Conservative, Socially Liberal, Green.

Bob is working towards improving health care and wages for Utahns, addressing energy and environmental issues and eliminating government bureaucracy.

More about Bob Springmeyer

Josie “has been a community activist and organizer since she first arrived in Utah in the early ’70s.
After Josie’s retirement from the SBA, she served on the cabinet for Mayor Rocky Anderson as Director of Diversity for the City of Salt Lake.”
Josie especially advocates for women and minorities.

More about Josie Valdez

This team is running on the Democratic ticket. I thought about this very carefully before deciding to formally support this team, since I feel that the Democratic party is just as bad as the Republican party, really. When I read about the values that these two candidates embrace, I became convinced that electing this team to the Hill would be of benefit to Utahns.

Besides, Bob rides a bike and the campaign lawn signs are Green! So I’ve put one in my yard.

Don’t worry, I’ve already suggested to Bob a switch to the Green Party. I’ll keep working on that.
