I pledge allegiance to all life
in its interdependent diversity;
and to the Planet upon which it exists;
one World, under the sky, undividable
with harmony and balance for all. ~ Tom King, 2001, for Blue Sky Institute -

What I did well in 2006
I usually don’t take just one time of the year to make resolutions or reflect back on a whole year at a time, instead trying to self-assess/reflect/evaluate/create goals as I go along. That way I can at least make attempts to check myself regularly instead of waiting for the end/beginning of each year.
Today I thought, though, I’d look at things I personally think I did well in 2006. This is not an all inclusive list, but what I can think of off the top of my head today.
In 2006 I:
I hope to be able to continue to improve my life this coming year by walking the talk – and by so doing, improving the lives of others and our planet as well.
Beginning a new year….

Memorial Vigil to commemorate 3000th Soldier Death
Memorial Vigil:
3000th U.S. Service Member Death in Iraq
People for Peace and Justice of Utah is sad to report the death of the 3000th U.S. Service Member in Iraq.
People for Peace and Justice of Utah will hold a Memorial Candlelight vigil Monday, January 1, 2007, to commemorate the 3000th U.S. Soldier Death in Iraq and all the lives lost in the Iraq War. You are encouraged to bring signs and a battery operated candle or other light source (wax candles are discouraged due to wax drippage – PPJ not responsible for damage to sidewalk). There will not be an established program, however if someone feels empowered to speak, they are free to do so. The vigil will consist of holding signs, standing in silence, or whatever method suits your level of participation. The main point is that the death and destruction has got to stop – NOW. Send a message to the Bush administration:
No more troops to Iraq – End it Now.
Not One More Death, Not One More Dollar.

Impeach for Peace
The eminent 3,000th U.S. soldier death in Iraq approaches(2998 as of the time of this writing). In three years and 9 months since the Iraq War began, American military casualties have now exceeded 25,000. Hundreds of thousands of deaths overall have occurred in this time period as a result of this illegal war and occupation.
End it now. Impeach for Peace, January 27-29th.

Model Sustainable Community
New German Community Models Car-free Living
This German Community has made the site of a former military base into a virtually car-free sustainable community. Residents have incentives, such as free passes on mass transit. This is an intriguing model of how we can redesign our living on this planet.

The Vauban neighborhood in Freiburg, Germany, is being developed as a model sustainable district on the site of a former military base. Many of the houses produce more energy than they use. Other buildings are heated by a neighborhood-scale combined heat and power station burning wood chips. (Photo by Jayson Antonoff)
