Utah Steps It Up!

Yesterday’s Global Warming rally was a success! It was beautiful weather, lots of great entertainment, outreach and networking. Our tables were busy all day!

I wasn’t able to get as many photos as I usually do, due to my tabling activities, but I did get quite a few (see below).

The highlight was being able to see Los Lobos who came to Salt Lake to perform for the event.

Local musicians Motherlode Canyon Band, Blue Haiku, Brenn Hill, Salty Rootz and the Salt Lake Alternative Jazz Band also performed.

Photos of David Rovics House Party

The David Rovics House Party I helped organize at Free Speech Zone was a huge success.  The room was packed, the food was great, and the concert was superb. Here are some photos:

Kurt Vonnegut

The world has lost a great writer – “the writer’s writer” – Kurt Vonnegut.

Here are some links to articles:

I really wonder what gives us the right to wreck this poor planet of ours.

Adopt a Native Elder

I love getting phone calls from folks who see fliers about events I help organize. Today I received a call from a man who saw our flier for the David Rovics House Party who wanted to rsvp. The conversation rolled into who he works for: Adopt a Native Elder. As a result of his call, I have been able to outreach to all sorts of other people about the Food Run program, for which volunteer drivers will be needed in May to take food to Big Mountain.

Each May and October the Program delivers boxes of food, clothing and simple medicines to different areas of the reservation.

The first part of the Food Run delivers items to areas in the Northeast section of Arizona close to Chinle, Many Farms, and Tsaile.

The second part of the Food Run delivers items to areas in the Northwest section of Arizona close to Kykutsmovi, Teesto, Bird Springs, Pinion, and Big Mountain.

David Rovics – photos from tonight’s concert

Tonight’s concert at the U went well. About 50 people attended. Between David‘s sets the Salt Lake City Slam Poets performed. Everyone was aweseome! Here are some photos:

Ya Better Watch Out – Cheney is coming to town

Things are really heating up here in Utah over Dick Cheney’s visit to Utah on April 26 when he will speak at Commencement ceremonies that day.
Today’s Deseret News has announced an “alternative commencement” event, that I received an email about from a BYU student yesterday.

The alternative commencement group hopes to draw 1,000 to 2,000.
“A lot of people from different groups in Salt Lake have said they’re interested in coming down,”
[Ashley]Sanders[event organizer] said. “They’ve already chartered buses.”

Students at BYU who are unhappy with Cheney’s upcoming visit have just about secured Ralph Nader to be the featured speaker at that event:

I am part of a group of students and community members who oppose Dick Cheney coming to speak at BYU’s commencement. We are, among other things, working to organize an alternative commencement and have been in negotiations with Ralph Nader to come and speak at this alternative commencement.

The group is in the process of raising the $15,000 to secure Nader for this event.

BEST STICKING IT TO THE MAN
Free Speech Zone
Ask most in Sugar House about Joe Hill, and you’re likely to get a blank stare. Never mind that the American labor hero was executed around the corner at what was then the state pen, now SugarHouse Park. No such problems at Free Speech Zone. Store owners know their history and will sell you posters commemorating Hill and other labor martyrs made, sweatshop free, in the most left-leaning enclaves of the country. More than a store to buy clothing to label yourself one of the goodies, Free Speech Zone is the spot to plan protests, screen progressive films and generally plot the revolution. 2144 Highland Dr., 487-2295, FreeSpeech-Zone.com

Sacred Peace Walk

My friends with the Nevada Desert Experience began their Sacred Peace Walk last Tuesday, March 27, beginning in Las Vegas and ending 69 miles away at the Nevada Test Site Tomorrow.  They are keeping up their blog with each day’s journey account.  At the test site, there will be a rally and action denouncing current nuclear plans and other warmaking preparations at the Test Site and propose alternatives for the land and industry. There will also be an optional action on Monday, April 2nd to reach out to the Test Site workers.

This is an annual pilgrimage to draw attention to the nuclear dangers that continue to threaten our sacred planet and the community of life.

The 2007 Sacred Peace Walk will have a special interfaith focus commemorating Sr. Rosemary Lynch’s 90th birthday, Mohammed’s birthday, Palm Sunday, April Fools Day, and early celebration of Passover, Buddha’s birthday, and the full moon.

As the walk has progressed, they have made various stops in places like the Atomic Testing Museum.

Be sure to check out their blog to see how the rest of the event goes.  Wish I could be there!
