R68 and The Alliance for Real Democracy – the scoop

The controversy continues over the “movement of resistance and protest” at this year’s DNC in Colorado.
I’ve been reading an lot of commentary and articles in Green circles and blogs about this, and here is what I have gleaned so far.

The two major groups involved in organizing protests at the DNC are Recreate ’68(R68) and the Alliance for Real Democracy(ARD).

It seems the entire controversy surrounds philosophies of non-violent vs. violent resistance, with R68 supporting more non-pacifist type resistance than the ARD (see more below on their respective philosophies). One of the key values of the Green Party is non-violence. So there are Colorado Greens who vehemently have denounced the R68 over their philosophy of civil resistance and have allied themselves with the ARD. (Not to mention that they are hastily attempting to take McKinney off the ballot line there because she is speaking at the R68 event in addition to the ARD event. Not a good move for Green politics).

Now I’ve also read claims that the ARD is very co-opted and includes member organizations such as Code Pink which is said by some to be pro-Democrat and gives the cold-shoulder treatment to the Green Party.

The schedule for the Alliance for Real Democracy has released their schedule of events which I found at Slapstick Politics.

I have posted some things below from both the R68 and ARD websites on their principles and issues. Note that R68 does not openly advocate violent resistance, however if you read between the lines, they support the actions of those who choose that method. The ARD openly does not condone any type of violent resistance.

About R68 (from its website):
R68 agrees with the proposition, POTESTAS IN POPULO, “all power comes from the people.” What stands between the people and power are the party machines. The parties were devised as a means to represent the people. Today they represent nobody, not even party members, but only party bureaucracy. The people have been left without appropriate institutions for their representation. We intend to create those institutions!

Update on Colorado Green Party/DNC issue

It looks like there is going to be a mediation process initiated with the greens in Colorado. Hopefully this will yield favorable results. I will post here what happens.

Controversy in Colorado over DNC activities

On the Wilder Side has nicely posted, with references to Green Party Watch’s article, about the controversy happening over the Green Party of Colorado’s unhappiness with the McKinney/Clemente campaign’s participating with recreate68. The controversy seems to be hinged on approaches to demonstrating and the possible compromise of the key value of non-violence.

The Colorado Green Party is so upset over McKinney’s participation with the recreate68 folks, who advocate civil disobedience as part of their activities in disrupting the DNC, that they are attempting to take McKinney off their ballot line.

So there are two things here for me:

First, as pointed out on On the Wilder Side’s blog, we are all peace activists desiring the same outcome – speaking out against injustices and calling the Dems on their BS. Yes, the approaches vary, but hey. These are desperate times calling for desperate measures. I personally advocate non-violent civil disobedience.

Second, how unfair of the Colorado Greens, as one fellow Green has put it, strip away the rights of the Colorado voters by taking McKinney off their ballot line? McKinney has been voted in as the Green Party Presidential Candidate and she needs to be on all ballot lines where there are ballot lines.

I support the Colorado Greens in speaking out about their disagreements with other groups and with the McKinney campaign’s actions, however I do not agree with the actions they are taking – it just contributes to the already existing factionalism that exists in the party. Just when there has been more unity on issues than ever in the GPUS (in my observation).

I sincerely hope that all involved parties can come together and discuss this and come to some terms of agreement – even if it is to disagree and move on with respective activities at the DNC – but please do not remove McKinney/Clemente from the ballot line in Colorado!

If you have a tattoo, you can’t become a Bountiful City Employee

While almost nothing surprises me, particularly in Utah, I still can’t believe this:

City goes further than most in banning body art and many piercings
By María Villaseñor
The Salt Lake Tribune

BOUNTIFUL – If that tribal tattoo peeks out of your collar, don’t bother applying to work for Bountiful City.
The City Council has voted to ban new employees from sporting head, face, neck or hand tattoos – currently tattooed staffers are exempt from the new rule.
Officials in this Davis County municipality said the ban – which also requires male workers to take out any piercings – didn’t arise from previous incidents, but rather is “anticipatory and preventative” as trends change.
“We want people to look professionally . . . so people will feel comfortable interacting with our employees,” said City Manager Tom Hardy.
….while a ban on offensive or gang-related ink is understandable to Bountiful resident Steve Richards, the rest of the prohibition is “a joke.”
“What are we in now, 2008?” he asked, adding “we’ve come a long way since things were so judgmental.”
Hardy said the policy is likely “generational” and could be obsolete in 30 years.

Huh? Isn’t that admitting to age discrimination? And maybe even discrimination based on religion (in some cases there may be religions whose members adorn tattoos is part of its custom….)?

“Some people don’t feel comfortable with interacting with people that are that way,” he said of tattoos and male piercings. “And some would say it looks unprofessional.”

Some people? Isn’t that less than most people?

Don’t get me wrong – I do support a dress code policy in some employment situations – but a total ban?

This is clearly an issue of generational discrimination. I feel that Bountiful City could have spent more time developing a more strict dress code policy – and should have involved a diverse committee, including employees and members of the public, to develop such.

US Groups File Election Complaint Against Wal-Mart

WAL-MART: VOTE FOR OBAMA  AND YOU COULD LOSE JOB

CHICAGO (Reuters) – Labor groups on Thursday asked federal regulators to look into whether Wal-Mart Stores Inc broke the law during company meetings with store managers where it warned about the consequences of a proposed labor law backed by Democrats.

At issue is whether Wal-Mart’s discussion of the law, which would make it easier for workers to unionize, amounted to an effort to dissuade employees from voting for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama. Wal-Mart denies that it tried to influence voting.

The Demise of the Jubilee Center

The Jubilee Center was “home” for many peace meetings and events from 2001 – 2006. It was owned by the Episcopal Church in Salt Lake City and not only catered to peace groups, but also provided services to homeless and low income people. The church sold the center a few years ago and built new buildings on the same lot as its church building (the Jubilee Center was in the block east of the church).

The Jubilee Center was purchased by some east coast investment firm which let it sit for almost 3 years. Last week, I saw it being torn down. The photos below show the building being demolished, with what was left of the stage still standing when I passed it:

Protesting The Bejing Olympics

Back in April I was a featured speaker at a rally to protest human rights abuses by the Chinese Government, especially highlighting the Bejing Olympics this year as a year to address those violations and abuses.

As the Olympics in Bejing Opens this weekend, there are protests around the world taking place:

Dissident decries attendance at Games
Hours after returning from a foiled attempt to visit his home country on the eve of the Olympics, Chinese dissident Yang Jianli railed against world leaders participating in the event, particularly President Bush.
“Imagine the situation: The heads of democracies swarmed to Beijing to participate in opening ceremonies which took place under martial law,” said Yang, a Harvard scholar and Brookline resident, pointing to the military presence and the crackdown on critics that preceded the event. “Millions of Chinese troops and police are deployed in Beijing and everybody is suspect now. . . . Beijing has become a forbidden city itself.”
Yang never made it to Beijing. He never even made it out of Hong Kong Airport. Yang, who was released last year after five years in a Chinese prison, was sent home via Japan, where he had been traveling.

Anti-China protests worldwide as Olympics begin

Worldwide protests coincide with opening ceremony: Hundreds of Tibetan activists detained in Nepal

Olympic protests held around the world: Demonstrations take place in cities including London, Hong Kong, Delhi and Kathmandu as opening ceremony begins

Thousands take part in global day of protest as Beijing Games open: Toronto demonstrators demand ‘Free Tibet’; hundreds arrested as exiles rally in Nepal
