Corporate Snitch Notifier

I discovered this neat little feature about Mozilla Firefox:

CSNotifier – The CorporateSnitch Notifier

CSNotifier – The Consumer has the Right to Know

Would you purchase that computer manufactured by a company that has profited from the War in Iraq?

Perhaps you would think twice about spending your hard-earned cash on shampoo if you knew that the company that manufactured it tested it on animals?

Whether your answer to these questions is “yes” or “no”, the CSNotifier gives you real-time information about Entities, the Products/Services they provide, and the practices they follow as you browse the Internet. Once you have installed it and your preferences have been set, you simply need to browse with Firefox as you normally would. A non-obtrusive window will appear inside your browser when you view a Web page about which CorporateSnitch has information.

“Why isn’t the CSNotifier showing when I visit the Web page of CompanyX?”
This is the question most often asked about our services. The simple answer is that we have not yet had a chance to enter the data related to that company’s practices. However, we are hoping you can help. With the release of CSNotifier version 1.3 (due for approval by Mozilla on 2007.01.16), we will provide tools for you to easily report Evidence to us regarding any Entity that you find.

FAQ (Excerpt)

Q: Will the CSNotifier replace the affiliate IDs added by sites that I visit with its own?
A: Yes and no. If a standard, direct affiliate product link was used to direct you to the product on the Preferred Merchant site, the referring site’s affiliate ID will not be replaced. However, it has been brought to our attention that subsequent links to products are being replaced by the CSNotifier in versions 1.1 and earlier. Example: SiteX.com has a link to BookY on Amazon.com. If you click on the link and then purchase BookY on Amazon.com, SiteX.com will receive credit for the purchase. However, if you then click on a different product on Amazon.com, the CSNotifier receives credit for that purchase. Please note that it was never our intent to take referral fees away from Web sites, and that all affiliate ID code has been removed from version 1.21 of the CSNotifier (currently being reviewed by the Mozilla staff). You can download version 1.21 now at http://www.corporatesnitch.com/CSNotifier/Install.aspx. We apologize and thank you for your patience in this matter.

(updated for more news coverage)

Tonight in Salt Lake there was a memorial vigil to mourn the deaths resulting from the Iraq War. About 30 people total gathered at the Federal Building. Some held candles and listened to speakers and others stood on the corner and held signs.

Here is news coverage:

A Mile of Flags

In Search of Peace, by Cindy Sheehan

What I did well in 2006

I usually don’t take just one time of the year to make resolutions or reflect back on a whole year at a time, instead trying to self-assess/reflect/evaluate/create goals as I go along. That way I can at least make attempts to check myself regularly instead of waiting for the end/beginning of each year.

Today I thought, though, I’d look at things I personally think I did well in 2006. This is not an all inclusive list, but what I can think of off the top of my head today.

In 2006 I:

  • did a better job at keeping informed by using blogging as a medium to do so.
  • ran for office.
  • improved in looking towards “tomorrow” and not agonizing over past events and occurences – especially those where I was the target of mean-spiritedness.
  • was better at “letting go” of things over which I had no control.
  • was able to successfully teach others how to communicate effectively with people – particularly in cases where there was a lack of appropriate communication skills
  • was able to realize that a holier-than-thou attitude towards people who shop at Wal-Mart isn’t the answer to helping effect a change. Examples effect change. Recognizing that low incomes and lack of resources for people to consume fairly are the problems, as well as corporate monopoly. Change takes time and my little part is to live by example and not to preach but to educate in compassionate ways.
  • took things less personally than I have in my past.
  • attended two national actions aimed at changing the political climate in our country.
  • attended and got arrested at a national action aimed at stopping a test at the test site in NV.
  • did a really good job at taking over a very difficult position at my work. A state audit of my files was very positive an confirming that I am doing it right!
  • continued shopping at thrift stores and dumpsters. I made most of my own gifts or bought them from fair trade and/or locally owned/made sources.
  • supported my son when he found out he was going to be a father.
  • became a proud grandmother.

I hope to be able to continue to improve my life this coming year by walking the talk – and by so doing, improving the lives of others and our planet as well.

Memorial Vigil to commemorate 3000th Soldier Death

    Memorial Vigil:
3000th U.S. Service Member Death in Iraq

People for Peace and Justice of Utah is sad to report the death of the 3000th U.S. Service Member in Iraq.

    Media Release

People for Peace and Justice of Utah will hold a Memorial Candlelight vigil Monday, January 1, 2007, to commemorate the 3000th U.S. Soldier Death in Iraq and all the lives lost in the Iraq War. You are encouraged to bring signs and a battery operated candle or other light source (wax candles are discouraged due to wax drippage – PPJ not responsible for damage to sidewalk). There will not be an established program, however if someone feels empowered to speak, they are free to do so. The vigil will consist of holding signs, standing in silence, or whatever method suits your level of participation. The main point is that the death and destruction has got to stop – NOW. Send a message to the Bush administration:
No more troops to Iraq – End it Now.

Not One More Death, Not One More Dollar.
