GPUS Voting results

Three proposals were adopted last night by the National Committee of the Green Party of the United States:

Hosting of the 2006 Annual National Meeting
Through ranked preference voting, delegates voted to have this year’s annual National Committee Meeting in Tuscon, Arizona from July 27-30.

GPUS National Committee Approval of Forum Managers
Three Discussion List Forum Managers and one alternate were voted in by a simple majority of votes:
51 “yes”; 27 “no”; 5 “abstain”.

(I am one of the three newly elected Forum Managers.)

Endorsement of Letter from Coal River Mountain Watch
In the spirit of the Key Value of Ecological Wisdom and in light of the recent tragedy at the Sago mines in West Virginia, the NC voted unanimously to the signing of the “Coal’s Dirty Secret” letter, drafted by Coal River Mountain Watch. The letter opposes the use of the misleading term “clean coal” by mine owners.

Green Party Elects New Steering Committee Member

Despite the protest of a minority of National Greens, a vacancy election was held to fill the 7th Steering Committee seat last week.

(See Tulsa report here, here, and here.)

Budd Dickinson, California Delegate to the Green Party of the United States, was elected to that seat in a ranked preference election.

This election was controversial among many (but not most) on the GPUS National Committee. An error was made tabulating the vote in Tulsa in the SC election for four of the seven SC seats. The threshold that was entered into the vote counting software was a whole number threshold and should have been a fractional threshold. This resulted in an apparent victory. Several days after the end of the Tulsa convention the software programmer that had written the vote tabulating software drew attention to this error in applying the threshold and Tom Sevigny, delegate from Connecticut, was declared the winner. The tabulating software that was used in Tulsa was the same software that had been used in previous SC elections. Some delegates (who are also members of GDI), after the Tulsa election, came forward with another software vote counting program, not used in Tulsa, which garnered a different outcome and declared Kristin Olsen, Minnesota delegate and GDI member, the winner.

Months of controversy has ensued, including a number of proposals brought before the National Committee. Some of these failed causing certain NC delegates to claim that their failure constituted a positive decision by the NC and some of the proposals were adopted. The outcome of one of these proposals, which passed, called for the resolution of the “Sevigny-Olsen” joint proposal prior to conducting a vacancy election. The “Sevigny-Olsen” joint proposal was considered by the NC and failed to be adopted. The “Sevigny-Olsen” joint proposal probably failed due to the resignation of Sevigny from the GPUS. Meanwhile, after having been nominated as a candidate in the vacancy election, the Minnesota Party instructed Olsen not to run in the election. During the course of these conflicts, impeachment charges were brought against five of the seven Steering Committee co-chairs by three GPUS (and GDI) members (tribunal currently in progress) along with threats from “GDI states” to disaffiliate from the GPUS.

Where Was Orrin?

First I arrived. Then two more people. Then two more. Then two more. All together there were 7 of us. There was no flurry of activity nor were there people headed into the dinner to honor Orrin Hatch for his political service to Utah. I had been told that the event had been publicized in Utah Policy.

We walked around both the Little America and Grand America Hotels and could find no indication of an Orrin Hatch event. One person, Julian Hatch (Green Party of Utah candidate for U.S. Senate) went into the Grand America and Paul went into the Little America Hotels to inquire as to where the Orrin Hatch dinner was. No one had any record of it.

Dang. They must have heard we were coming. And we had some nice homemade nut cakes, too!

We considered roaming the streets and making a video called “Orrin and Me” – in search of Orrin Hatch, but we decided to save our energies, newly made posteres, fliers and nutcakes for tomorrow night’s regular weekly sidewalk vigil instead. Maybe next time.

The only republican-looking person among us, Paul, took off his bike helmet and combed back his hair in preparation to walk inside the Little America Hotel to inquire about the dinner for Orrin Hatch.

Here we are, prepared for our “nutcakes” rally:
Brighide, Pete, Deanna, Eileen, Julian (Paul and Shea had left)

So, where was Orrin?
He was in Utah County, where the Utah County Republicans had their Lincoln Day Dinner, at which Orrin Hatch was present. **That’s** where he was!
(I searched Utah policy and found that the dinner had been publicized once on January 20 for a February 21 dinner. Looks like we were given the wrong date.)

Split Greens: Moving on; an analogy

Awhile back I created a page specifically on The Green Party of Utah(left side bar), including links to information on the 2004 split.

Nationally and locally there are folks who are boycotting one of the split groups or another….or both. Nationally and locally there are folks who continue to attack one side or the other…..or both. Nationally and locally there are folks who continue to analyze that situation (the split). I understand the need to do this, to complete and analysis to provide information and to eventually come to possible personal closure on this issue.

I also feel, for myself, that the issue, while still effecting some aspects of the Green Party in Utah, is in the past, both groups have moved on and enough is enough.

An Unreasonable Man

Today in Salt Lake the Sundance Film about Ralph Nader,AN UNREASONABLE MAN, is being shown (details below). It is sure to be a sell-out. Please write in your comments about the film if you have seen it or will see it today but clicking on “speak” at the bottom of this post.
—————————————————————————
The name Ralph Nader sparks fiery debate among people across the country. To some, he is an icon of rare idealism, while others see him simply as the political spoiler of the last two elections. No matter what you think of the man, the fact remains that he is a tireless crusader.

Green Party: Are the Democrats safe in 2006?

Fellow Green and GPUS Alternate Delegate Tom Yagerfrom Virginia, the pleasure of whom we had meeting in Tulsa last summer, has given me permission to post his message to the GPUS National Committee from yesterday. There is a lot of internal struggle at the national level and Tom’s post was a pleasurable, encouraging and insightful message.

The 2006 elections are the greatest opportunity that the Green Party has ever had in this country. In addition to the series of post-2004 capitulations on Bush’s legislative agenda, Nancy Pelosi handed the
Greens a tremendous gift when she announced that the Democratic Party was not taking a position on Iraq. Any political party that refuses to take a position on the foremost issue that our country faces richly
deserves to be defeated at the polls.

The Green Moment

David Baldwin, a New York-based freelance writer, peace activist and Green Party member, has written an article published in ZNet called The Green Moment.
Baldwin provides a brief analysis of the history and current state of the Republican and Democrat Parties and outlines how the Green Party, the only “Peace Party”, can fill the void of instability of the two aforementioned parties.

Free the Four

Demracy Now had a segment on its show today on how there is No Word on the Fate of Four Kidnapped Christian Peace Activists as the Deadline From Captors to Kill Them Passes in Iraq.

More than 35,000 people have signed an online petition urging their release and support from Muslim activists has been especially significant.

Tom Fox, a Virginia Green Party Member is one of the four abducted.
