Cynthia McKinney – A Gift for a Generation: A U.S. Financial System of Our Own

Cynthia McKinney
A Gift for a Generation: A U.S. Financial System of Our Own
September 25, 2008

Last week, I posted ten points (that were by no means exhaustive) for Congressional action immediately in the wake of the financial crisis now gripping our country. At that time, the Democratic leadership of Congress was prepared to adjourn the current legislative Session to campaign, without taking any action at all to put policies in place that protect U.S. taxpayers and the global community that has accepted U.S. financial leadership. Those ten points, to be taken in conjunction with the Power to the People Committee’s platform available on the campaign website at (http://votetruth08.com/index.php/resources/campaignplatform), are as follows:

1. Enactment of a foreclosure moratorium now before the next phase of ARM interest rate increases take effect;
2. elimination of all ARM mortgages and their renegotiation into 30- or 40-year loans;
3. establishment of new mortgage lending practices to end predatory and discriminatory practices;
4. establishment of criteria and construction goals for affordable housing;
5. redefinition of credit and regulation of the credit industry so that discriminatory practices are completely eliminated;
6. full funding for initiatives that eliminate racial and ethnic disparities in home ownership;
7. recognition of shelter as a right according to the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights to which the U.S. is a signatory so that no one sleeps on U.S. streets;
8. full funding of a fund designed to cushion the job loss and provide for retraining of those at the bottom of the income scale as the economy transitions;
9. close all tax loopholes and repeal of the Bush tax cuts for the top 1% of income earners; and
10. fairly tax corporations, denying federal subsidies to those who relocate jobs overseas repeal NAFTA.

In addition to these ten points, I now add four more:

11. Appointment of former Comptroller General David Walker to fully audit all recipients of taxpayer cash infusions, including JP Morgan, Bear Stearns, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and AIG, and to monitor their trading activities into the future;
12. elimination of all derivatives trading;
13. nationalization of the Federal Reserve and the establishment of a federally-owned, public banking system that makes credit available for small businesses, homeowners, manufacturing operations, renewable energy and infrastructure investments; and
14. criminal prosecution of any activities that violated the law, including conflicts of interest that led to the current crisis.

Ellen Brown, author of “The Web of Debt” writes at http://www.webofdebt.com/articles/, “Such a public bank today could solve not only the housing crisis but a number of other pressing problems, including the infrastructure crisis and the energy crisis. Once bankrupt businesses have been restored to solvency, the usual practice is to return them to private hands; but a better plan for Fannie and Freddie might be to simply keep them as public institutions.”

Too many times politicians have told us to support the “free market.” The unfolding news informs us in a most costly manner that free markets don’t work. This is a financial system of their making. It’s now past time for the people to have an economic system of their own. A reading of the full text on the Congressional “Agreement on Principles” for the proposed $700 billion bailout reveals the sham that this so-called agreement truly is. Today our country faces an economic 9/11. The problem that is unfolding is truly systemic and no stop-gap measures that maintain the current bankrupt structure will be sufficient to resolve this crisis of the U.S. economic engine.

Today is my son’s birthday. What a gift to the young people of this country if we were to present to them a clean break from the policies that produced this economic disaster, the “financial tsunami” that former Comptroller General David Walker warned us of so many months ago and instead offered them a U.S. economic superstructure that truly was their own.

Power to the People!

Peter Camejo died this morning, September 13, 2008.

From Peter Camejo Updates

Dear Friends,

We are very sorry to bring the following message from Peter’s family to you.

——————————————————————

9/13/2008

It is with great sadness and regret that we have to inform you that Peter Camejo died this morning. Peter decided that he would be more comfortable at home, and the doctors agreed. Arrangements were made, and ultimately Peter returned home yesterday. Peter’s health had declined rapidly over the last two days due to the aggressiveness of his cancer and the strength of the drugs used to combat his disease. His wife was at his side when he passed peacefully this morning.

Peter is survived by his wife Morella, his daughter Alexandra, his son Victor, three brothers Antonio, Daniel, and Danny, and three grandchildren Andrew and Daniel and Oliver.

Arrangements and memorial services will be announced at a later date. As a courtesy, the family requests that there be no calls at this time.

The Camejo Family

——————————————————————

The family is planning private funeral services. A public memorial will be held in late fall or winter. Peter had discussed plans for his memorial with Claudette Begin and asked her to organize it. She will obviously need to be in contact with the many people he has been in touch with and affected over the years, and will welcome your help. She can be reached at achis@igc.org

People are invited to send hard copy reminiscences of Peter to be included at the memorial. Please send these to his brother Dan Ratner, The Camejo Group, 520 Third St., Ste. 201, Oakland, CA 94607-3505.

From Wikipedia

Peter Miguel Camejo (December 31, 1939, New York CitySeptember 13, 2008, Folsom, California) was an American author, activist and politician. In 2004, he was selected by independent candidate Ralph Nader as his vice-presidential running mate on a ticket which had the endorsement of the Reform Party.[1][2] Camejo was a three time Green Party gubernatorial candidate most recently in 2006 receiving 2.3% of the vote. Camejo also ran in the 2003 California recall election finishing fourth in a field of 135 candidates (2.8%), and 2002 finishing third with 5.3%. In January 2007, Camejo announced that he had been diagnosed with early-stage lymphoma, a cancer that is usually treatable.[3] As of March, 2008 after a series of chemotherapy treatments, the cancer was in remission,[4] but in May it was announced that doctors had made a second diagnosis of lymphoma.[5]

McKinney excluded from CNN coverage of Third Party Candidate Press Conference in DC yesterday

There have been reports that CNN, in its broadcast coverage, is whitewashing Cynthia McKinney from yesterday’s press conference at the National Press Club in DC. Apparently, CNN is showing Ron Paul and Ralph Nader but no one else on the panel, misleadingly suggesting that Paul has endorsed Nader, and Cynthia McKinney’s name is never mentioned.

If you watch CNN and you find this to be true, please contact CNN and ask why they’re censoring the Green Party’s presidential nominee. I don’t watch TV or have cable, so I can’t confirm how CNN is covering the story.

McKinney/Clemente on the Ballot in over 30 states so far, not including write-ins

Shamelessly stolen from Green Party Watch

What is the current state of Ballot Access?

September 8th, 2008

Greens and McKinney supporters across the nation want to know which states the McKinney/Clemente ticket will be on the ballot and where they will be write-in candidates.

At Ballot Access News the chart shows the McKinney/Clemente ticket on in 31 states and DC. In an email to state McKinney campaign coordinators National Party Secretary Holly Hart said that the campaign is on in those 31 states and DC and expects to be on in Vermont as well. With a lawsuit underway in North Carolina, that state party went ahead and set themselves up to conduct a write-in campaign so those votes would be counted in case the suit is not settled before then.

Other states with “official” write-in campaigns include Indiana, New Hampshire, Wyoming, Texas, Alabama and Georgia. Missouri, Kentucky and Alaska are likely to have “official” write-in campaigns. Kansas, Montana, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut are possible write-in states. Both Idaho and North Dakota fall into the “unsure” category for write-ins, and both Oklahoma and South Dakota will not count our write-in votes.

The good news is, if your state is not in the lists above, McKinney/Clemente will be on your ballot come November!

Ron Paul Press Conference Unifies Third Party and Independent Candidates Around Four Key Positions

From Op Ed News (scroll down for links to video clips from another source)
by Kevin Zeese

Polls Indicate Non-Duopoly Candidates Could Determine Outcome of the Election

Ron Paul held what he described as a “very important” press conference on September 10th in Washington, DC. The event brought four third party and independent candidates “together in unity” around a statement of principles.  The event came as polls showed the presidential race tightening and third party/independent candidates getting combined votes of over 10% in swing states.The four candidates – Independent Ralph Nader, the Green nominee Cynthia McKinney, the Constitution Party’s Chuck Baldwin and the Libertarian Party’s Bob Barr along with Ron Paul agreed on the following four key principles:

Foreign Policy: The Iraq War must end as quickly as possible with removal of all our soldiers from the region. Continue reading
