Our illustrious Supreme Court…..

Crooks and Liars has a great piece on the U.S. Supreme’s court decision so far this term:

In one full term, this Court has severely curbed local efforts to promote racial diversity in schools, upheld a right-wing ban on a necessary medical procedure for women, curbed students’ free speech rights, crippled Congress’ ability to keep corporate money out of political advertising, prevented taxpayers from challenging the constitutionality of Bush’s faith-based initiatives, made it almost impossible for women to prevail on claims of longterm sex discrimination . . . and they’re just getting started.

I had read with interesta couple of days ago, and forwarded on to my colleagues, an article on the Court’s decision to curb free speech rights of students in public schools.  Working in a First Amendment school, cases like these are of particular interest in that they may have an impact on that initiative.

SHUT DOWN WASHINGTON D.C.

There has been a call to action from Sept 22 – 29 in protest to the ongoing Iraq War and the Congress continuing to fund it.

The Troops Out Now Coalition has issued a call for action (below).  I will personally be advocating for people to head to D.C. instead of organizing marches in their areas.  Like the issued statement below, marches and rallies in our respective cities will not shut the war machine down.  We must all head to D.C. in mass!

I have dreamt of this for quite some time – that the masses will head to D.C. and the roads and freeways will be filled with Americans who demand accountability from our government will proceed to the door of the heart of the U.S. government and stay there until it stops!

Congress will not end the war
Marches alone will not end the war
It’s time to shut down Washington DC –
No more business as usual!

SEPT 22- 29: It’s time to move from Protest to Resistance:

SEPT 29: Mass March on the White House

SEPT 22- 29: Encampment in front of Congress – Cut off the War funds – Build a People Peace Congress

National Antiwar Strategy Meeting: Activists call for unified struggle to stop the war

More than 100 anti-war organizers, including many students and youths, labor, community and immigrant organizers, veterans and GI organizers gathered June 16 at the Solidarity Center in New York City for the standing-room only National Antiwar Strategy and Planning Meeting. They came from as far away as California, Cleveland, North Carolina, New Orleans and Boston to discuss the need to move from protest to resistance and build a grassroots movement to stop the war.

September: The next big confrontation over the war

The meeting focused largely on a proposal from the Troops Out Now Coalition for an Encampment to Stop the War and a Mass March in Washington during the week of September 22-29.  According to the Washington calendar, this will be the next big political confrontation on the war. This is when the House and Senate debate war funding for 2008. And it is when General David Petraeus reports to Congress on the status of Bush’s troops “surge.”

Many applauded this proposal as the necessary next step to take the struggle against the war to a new level of resistance. The encampment has the potential to ensure that another war vote does not go unchallenged. The proposal opens an opportunity for an independent intervention representing the people, who are overwhelmingly against the war.

Many ideas were raised for the week-long encampment, including a proposal for a Peoples’ Peace Congress to challenge the corporate war Congress in Washington. At such a gathering, different groups could argue for better uses for the funds now earmarked for war. By demanding funds for health care, education and job creation, for example, they could directly confront the “war Congress” meeting at the Capitol.

Youth activists reported on their work to build a national student strike during the week of the Encampment.  Activists volunteered to begin working on logistics, housing, transportation, and the many other tasks involved in bringing an encampment to Washington.  Others are working to bring musicians, artists, and poets to DC for the Encampment and March.  Activists and organizations have volunteered to set up tents at the Encampment that focus on particular issues.

Only the people will stop the war
The Democratic Party bait & switch

Many took note of how the Democrats had betrayed their clear electoral mandate to end the war.

House Speaker Pelosi and President George W. Bush

It was clear to all that despite being elected to bring the troops home and end the criminal occupation, the Democrats in Congress have completely capitulated to Bush on the issue of continuing to fund the war.  Even a determined congressional minority of Democrats could block the funding for the war—if they had really decided to end the war. They could disrupt and filibuster. They could call on people from around the country to surround Congress. Instead, while posing as the “anti-war” majority party, the Democrats have completely capitulated to Bush and the Pentagon.

Building an independent movement is more important than ever, as pressure grows to abandon struggle on the streets and surrender the antiwar movement to the Democratic Party, a party that now completely shares in complicity for the criminal war and occupation in Iraq.
Participants noted that Wall Street and their mouthpieces always want to divert the mass movement into safe channels—into lobbying and voting and trusting in the bought-and-paid-for politicians. The challenge is to develop clear demands that move the struggle into the streets.

Back to the streets:
Unite to shut down the war

Many present noted that the lack of unity in the antiwar movement is a crisis that must be frankly addressed.   Some noted that during the last struggle over war funding in March, the movement had a real opportunity to intervene if it acted decisively.  Instead, organizations and coalitions called competing events in different venues, deliberately timed to undermine participation in other actions.  This sort of cynical maneuvering for organizational advantage weakens the movement, demoralizes activists, and only plays into the hands of Bush and the warmongers in Washington.

TONC organizers and others stressed that the September struggle over the war funding is a crucial fight that can be a real opportunity to galvanize the struggle against the war, particularly if the movement can unite.  There was a broad consensus on the need to reach out to ALL national antiwar coalitions, as well as the many local grassroots organizations, to build a united demonstration that will be as large and as strong as possible.  TONC organizers emphasized that they welcome and encourage discussion and suggestions for modifying and improving the proposal for the actions in September.

Many participants also emphasized the importance of uniting the struggle against the war abroad with the struggle against the war at home. Those at the meeting encompassing these struggles included Teresa Gutierrez, a leading organizer of the May 1st Coalition for Immigrant Rights, Brenda Stokely of the Million Worker March Movement, Larry Hales of the Colorado United Communities Against Police Brutality, along with many trade union activists.

Regarding the content of the anti-war call, there was overwhelming sentiment that it should be for immediate withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq and Afghanistan, with many expressing solidarity with the resistance movements in those countries and in Palestine and Lebanon. The TONC organizers took note of the U.S. threats against Iran and are raising slogans against U.S. aggression against Iran, too.

Together we can and must change the political agenda

The struggle to stop the war has made tremendous gains.  The vast majority of the people are now opposed to the occupation.  G.I. opposition is growing as soldiers increasingly oppose being sent to fight and die in this horrific war, in which they have no interest. The politicians in Washington are clearly on the defensive, as their dreams of Empire in the Middle East crumble, their lies about the war are exposed, and as the vast majority of people here and worldwide oppose their heinous war.

But we must do more!  The war in Iraq is not a “failed policy;” it is a horrendous crime against the Iraqi people.  It must be stopped!  Everyday the occupation brings more death and destruction to the Iraqi people.  It brings more deaths and serious injuries to U.S. youth who are trapped in this war, and return home to find inadequate medical care and benefits.

It will take an independent movement to stop the war, a movement that takes an independent road geared to mobilizing people in this country to challenge all of the war makers in Washington, that strongly demands the withdrawal of all U.S. troops NOW and calls for ending ALL war funding immediately.

This is a crucial time. What is needed now is an unprecedented outpouring of resistance.  We must demonstrate to the politicians in Washington that we will not allow business as usual to continue.

The Troops Out Now Coalition encourages all of the antiwar coalitions on the local and national level to engage each other and where communication has broken down, to open new lines of communication so that our combined efforts will make us stronger.

Let us join forces with the movements struggling for:

* No War against Iran
* End all occupations now – from Iraq to Palestine, the Philippines, Haiti, Puerto Rico, and Afghanistan
* Impeach Bush & Cheney for War Crimes
* No to U.S. intervention – Hands off Cuba, Venezuela, Zimbabwe, and the Sudan
* Stop the raids against immigrant workers — Full rights for undocumented workers
* Justice for Katrina survivors – End racist police terror
* Free Mumia Abu-Jamal and all political prisoners
* Money for health care, jobs and education, not endless war

Together let’s unite to demand:
* Immediate withdrawal of all troops
* Cut off ALL war funding

The Voucher saga

The Utah Supreme court recently determined that an amendment to the voucher bill was not enough to stand alone as the law which would dictate that Utah schools distribute tax-supported vouchers to parents to want to send their children to private schools.  In other words, the people will determine that in a vote in November.

I find it interesting that pro-voucher groups like Parents for Choice in Education spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to push the voucher bill through this past year’s legislature and to oppose the petition drive for a referendum allowing the people to vote in November on the issue.   Why would anyone or any group oppose having the vote and voice of the people making the decisions?

According to an editorial in the Salt Lake City Weekly by Holly Mullen, a good chunk of the money for this group’s efforts came from out of state interests connected to Amway and WalMart.

Hmmm….vouchers don’t have anything to do with the interests of right-wing rich people, do they?  Right….

Costa Rica withdraws from School of the Americas

I was so glad to have the news item below come to my email box yesterday, about Costa Rica withdrawing from the  School of the Americas,  the terrorist training camp at Ft. Benning, Georgia.  Costa Rica joins the ranks of three other countries which have withdrawn their participation in this institution which trains military personnel from Latin America who then are used by oppressive regimes in various countries to inflict human rights abuses, including torture and murder, on its own citizens.  The School of the Americas Watch has been fighting for years to get the SOA closed down.

Costa Rica to Cease Training at the SOA/WHINSEC!

Costa Rican President Oscar Arias announced Wednesday that Costa Rica will cease to send police to train at the U.S. Army Ft. Benning facility after citing its history of involvement in military coups and human rights abuses throughout Latin America.

(Photo: President Oscar Arias)

Arias, a Nobel Peace Prize winner, made the decision after talks with a delegation of the School of the Americas Watch, including the Rev. Roy Bourgeois and Lisa Sullivan Rodriguez. The human rights advocacy group has campaigned since 1990 for the closure of the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (WHINSEC), formerly known as the School for the Americas (SOA), located at Fort Benning, Georgia.

Costa Rica has no army but has sent approximately 2,600 police officers over the years to be trained at the school. Minor Masis, leader of Costa Rica’s former “Comando Cobra” anti-drug squad attended the School in 1991 and returned to Costa Rica, only to serve a 42-year jail term for rape and murder committed during a 1992 drug raid. Costa Rica currently has three policemen at the center.

“When the courses end for the three policemen we are not going to send any more,” Arias said.

Costa Rica is the fourth country to announce a withdrawal from the SOA/WHINSEC. In 2006, the governments of Argentina and Uruguay announced that they would cease all training at the school, becoming the second and third countries to announce a cessation of training. In January of 2004, Hugo Chavez announced that Venezuela would no longer send troops to train at the school.

Costa Rica’s withdrawal from WHINSEC is a great victory for human rights in Latin America. With this major breakthrough, Costa Rica adds its name to the list of countries who are rejecting the destructive approach of institutions such as the SOA/WHINSEC. Combat training and military spending as a means to “solve” social problems do not bring peace and democracy.

Huh?

This week:
The U.S. Senate  is proposing to cut off funding for the Iraq War after March 31, 2008.
Wait, though.
The U.S. Senate is proposing to still spend 120 Billion dollars on Iraq and Afghanistan.
But wait.
The U.S. Senate proposes a call for troops to begin leaving Iraq by October 1.
But then….
The U.S. Senate say the president can wave the October 1 call if he doesn’t like that.

Huh?

This makes no sense.  People, call your senators and representatives today to tell them:
NO MORE.  BRING ‘EM HOME.  NOW.  NO MORE DOLLARS. NO MORE DEATHS.  OUT OF IRAQ NOW.

The School Voucher Saga

Today I received the announcement below about a pro-school voucher rally called, “Stand Up for  Utah Kids:  School Choice Rally”.  I’m not sure how I got on this list, nonetheless I am and got the announcement.  The state legislators passed a measure this year that would allow parents to obtain vouchers for private schools if they so choose.  Keep in mind that many of those legislators have children who are home schooled (leaving me wondering if a bill in the future will propose that parents be paid to home school their kids…..).

There is a lot that bothers me about this announement, but right off the bat you can see that this rally is in the middle of the day.  It seems that the only folks who might be able to afford to  participate would be those who are bosses and those who don’t have to work, thus reinforcing in my mind that the people who are being most vocal about this are those who can already afford to send their kids to private schools in the first place. (And remember that even if a parent wanted a voucher, it wouldn’t be enough to pay for an entire year’s tuition at a private school, leaving families with low incomes out of the loop entirely).

Another bothersome point is that these people are actually encouraging folks to take their kids out of school to attend this rally.  That is assuming that the participants even have their children in school (vs. home schooling them).

Stand Up for Utah Kids
School Choice Rally

JOIN US in support of Utah moms and dads who want to be able to choose the school that works best for their kids. Together, we can make a difference for the thousands of families who are depending on the voucher program to start THIS fall.

WHEN: Tuesday, May 15, 2007
TIME: 1:30 – 2:30 PM
WHERE: State Capitol, Salt Lake City

(courtyard north of the main capitol building)

It’s time to put KIDS before politics
By law, Utah’s new voucher program went into effect last Monday. Unfortunately, the State School Board chose to disregard the law at their recent board meeting by deciding to not implement the voucher program for this fall. We’re holding the rally on May 15th because that is the day by law that the State School Board should make voucher applications available for families.

As many of you know, the referendum/petition against vouchers is only against the first of two bills that were passed during the recent legislative session. The Attorney General issued an official opinion stating that the voucher program should move forward regardless of the referendum.

Please make this rally a priority
Together, our voices will put a human face to this important issue and pressure government officials to uphold the law by implementing the voucher program.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

1. Attend the Rally
Take a late lunch. Bring your whole family and your neighbors, too

2. Spread the Word

I looked at the very fancy website that the advocates of school vouchers have put together (see above link).  I believe this organization (Parents for Choice in Education) are advocated by/linked to Utah’s Eagle Forum, a right wing organization touting support of  “family values” and “conservative principles”.

The PEC site also has a page on “supporters of choice in education”.  Get this list:

Gov. Jon Huntsman, Ronald Reagan, Chester Finn Jr. (Assistant Secretary of Education under Ronald Reagan), Senator John McCain, Mitt Romney, Rudy Giuliani, Newt Gingrich,  Rep. Rob Bishop,  Utah Sen. Howard Stephenson, Richard Moss (Utah State School Board), Bill Colbert (Utah State School Board)

Notice that the above mentioned “supporters of school choice” are all rich, and some dead, white guys.

‘Nuff said.

Polictical messages on license plates might get you in trouble……

There is an item on Common Dreams about the DMV in South Dakota attempting to revoke a woman’s license plate because of the plates political messageMPEACHW  She had the plates made to match her husband’s which had IMPCH W

On April 18, Heather Morijah got a letter from the South Dakota DMV.

The agency “is in receipt of a written complaint about your personalized plates,” the letter says. “With this complaint I am sorry to inform you that the set of plates MPEACHW are being recalled. . . . You will have 10 days from the date of receiving this letter to surrender the plates.”

When Morijahn called the DMV and asked for a copy of the complaint (with the person’s name blacked out, a list of all the vanity plates they’d issued in the last year, and  a list of the vanity plates they had recalled, she was denied the request.

When a reporter contact the DMV, the response was:

“I’m following the letter of the law,” DMV director Deb Hillmer told Woster. “It’s offensive to someone and not in good taste and decency. And the plates are the property of the state of South Dakota.”

Thanks to the ACLU, the DMV changed their tune.

The ACLU’s Ring then faxed over a letter on May 4 to Paul Kinsman, secretary of Revenue and Regulation, which oversees the DMV.

“Her opinion may not be shared by everyone in the United States or in South Dakota,” Ring wrote. “Regardless, her political comments and criticism are protected by the First Amendment of the United States Constitution and the Article 4, Section 5, of the South Dakota Constitution, and the state is not permitted to censor that protected speech.”

Ring pointed out that “political speech such as ‘impeach George Bush’ is indisputably not ‘indecent’ or ‘vulgar’ in any respect. It may offend some citizens of South Dakota, but that is not a valid basis for the State to censor pure political speech.”

On May 7, the DMV pulled a U-turn.

Heather Morijah states:

“We both feel very strongly about this administration for a large number of reasons. The big number one would be leading us into an imperialistic occupation in Iraq to get their oil, and lying to the American people at the expense of many American lives and many Iraqi lives. And number two, the horrifying damage they’re inflicting on the environment in this country and in the world. This particular issue has been resolved,” she says. “But I hope the momentum this has created continues. And not just on the free speech issue, but also on going forward with removing this incredibly harmful administration.”

Iacocca on Leaadership?

Lee Iacocca has written an article called Where Have All the Leaders Gone? over at Common Dreams Based on his book by the same name, Iacocca blasts the current administration and state of affairs.

Had Enough?
Am I the only guy in this country who’s fed up with what’s happening? Where the hell is our outrage? We should be screaming bloody murder.

0508 06

We’ve got a gang of clueless bozos steering our ship of state right over a cliff, we’ve got corporate gangsters stealing us blind, and we can’t even clean up after a hurricane much less build a hybrid car. But instead of getting mad, everyone sits around and nods their heads when the politicians say, “Stay the course.”

Stay the course? You’ve got to be kidding. This is America, not the damned Titanic. I’ll give you a sound bite: Throw the bums out!

Iacocca describes his  “C” list that serves as a “test of a leader”:  Curiosity, Creative, Communicate, Character, Courage, Charisma, Conviction, Competent, Common Sense.  He states that the Biggest “C” is Crisis.

Leaders are made, not born. Leadership is forged in times of crisis. It’s easy to sit there with your feet up on the desk and talk theory. Or send someone else’s kids off to war when you’ve never seen a battlefield yourself. It’s another thing to lead when your world comes tumbling down.

On September 11, 2001, we needed a strong leader more than any other time in our history. We needed a steady hand to guide us out of the ashes. Where was George Bush? He was reading a story about a pet goat to kids in Florida when he heard about the attacks. He kept sitting there for twenty minutes with a baffled look on his face. It’s all on tape. You can see it for yourself. Then, instead of taking the quickest route back to Washington and immediately going on the air to reassure the panicked people of this country, he decided it wasn’t safe to return to the White House. He basically went into hiding for the day—and he told Vice President Dick Cheney to stay put in his bunker. We were all frozen in front of our TVs, scared out of our wits, waiting for our leaders to tell us that we were going to be okay, and there was nobody home. It took Bush a couple of days to get his bearings and devise the right photo op at Ground Zero.

That was George Bush’s moment of truth, and he was paralyzed. And what did he do when he’d regained his composure? He led us down the road to Iraq—a road his own father had considered disastrous when he was President. But Bush didn’t listen to Daddy. He listened to a higher father. He prides himself on being faith based, not reality based. If that doesn’t scare the crap out of you, I don’t know what will.

Common Dreams started allowing comments to its articles.  There are some very interesting points made to this post:

what leaders?!?!? have not seen one in years!!!!! Iacocca, were you ever a leader? what did you ever do to improve the overall quality of life in the united states. after 82 years….well… better late than never. use your “business skills” to empower people!

I have news for the gang in Congress. We didn’t elect you to sit on your asses and do nothing and remain silent while our democracy is being hijacked and our greatness is being replaced with mediocrity. What is everybody so afraid of? That some bobblehead on Fox News will call them a name? Give me a break. Why don’t you guys show some spine for a change?”

And the “gang” in Congress, as you sensibly call them, has news for you too, Lee. Currently, it’s called the PR Plan. The Pelosi-Reid Plan to Abolish America:

Pelosi and Reid have turned to their plan for controlling Iraq – popularly known as the PR Plan.

They vowed, “We will work with the President in whatever way we can.” They meant the statement to be totally ambiguous, but unfortunately for them, upon uttering it, the official pair instantly collapsed to the ground, apparently for lack of some vital measure of blood and bone, as well as some bizarre overabundance of scales, claws, and oozing oil.

“Defunding the war immediately is totally impossible,” uttered Pelosi and Reid in unison while slithering across the ground, sliming their way back to their Gang of Democrats. The Republican Gang applauded silently from the side.

“It seems clear now,” one observer remarked, “that the Democrat and Republican parties are gone – if parties they ever were – and are replaced by gangs. Official suite gangs.” Oddly, no one was heard to contradict him.

Within hours, a person we can only identify as Deep Source delivered to us the following rather striking internal document. We have rarely seen a government document quite as internal as this, and we must confess, as good members of the press, we hope to see very few more like it. “The 10 Point PR Plan (For Internal Consumption Only)”:

1st: Pretend that you intend to end the War against Iraq.

[etc]

————————————————————————————————————-

Dear Mr. Iacocca: Once again I read a clear delineation of the problems this country confronts, and I agree with your findings. Unfortunately, no one in our government is willing to respond with the same firmness and clarity, least of all, those who most want to head the government. There is not a leader in the lot, though one or two – Mr. Kucinich or Mr. Gravel, perhaps – show some potential. But to articulate the problems is not enough. Nor is your call to “shake off the horseshit and go to work.” What is missing most, what we are seeking, is an equally clear course of action to take. We are all tired of the garbage that passes as news, the platitudes our overpaid politicians have convinced themselves are meaningful. We are all outraged at the actions of those who pretend to be leaders. We need something more, much more. I now find myself among people so disheartened that they are talking reluctantly and sadly about the growing need for a tangible revolution, because everything else seems to have failed to produce a badly needed change.

I tend to agree with the readers: “Where have all the leaders gone?” is a misnomer indeed.
