My daughter and ovarian cysts

My daughter had to be rushed to the ER last night – for the third time in about 3-4 months – with another burst ovarian cyst.

She is only 16. I am so worried about her. If anyone knows what the long-term prognosis is, generally, for women with this problem, please offer information.

The really sad thing for us is that I am 2,000 miles away from her. She lives with her father. He refuses to take her to the ER each time and she has to call my son or another family member.
She is strong and getting through it ok, but this is a very negative situation for her.

We’re Back

We are back from our three week vacation. I’ll be posting photos soon and linking to them here. What a beautiful country we have.

Utah’s Budget Surplus

Today’s Salt Lake Tribune has published the article $350 million: The advocates for worthy causes compete for the excess state cash: How to divvy up big surplus?

In the face of the latest record-breaking revenue surplus – the Utah Tax Commission reported a $350 million excess in collections through June – education and health care advocates hope to make up for lost ground.

But just how is this surplus going to be used?

Despite public surveys that have shown taxpayers would rather see the surplus go to education, transportation and health needs rather than get a tax cut, many lawmakers still hope to give $70 million to $115 million back. For many it’s a philosophical issue, but it doesn’t hurt that this is an election year for all House members and half the senators.

I don’t get it. The public is dictating how we want our tax dollars spend and the lawmakers aren’t listening? And who do they work for again?

“We can invest in education or we can invest in transportation, or – more importantly – we can return it to the taxpayer,” says Hughes, chairman of the Republican Conservative Caucus. Hughes and his colleagues warn that gleeful spending in times of surplus means inevitable painful cuts in times of deficit.

More importantly?

“As a legislative body, we show less discipline than our kids do at Toys R Us,” Hughes said, referring to the blessing and threat intrinsic in a large surplus. “I’m 100 percent convinced that we will be cutting those very programs to which we gave increases.”
Though Valentine does not see spending on education and transportation as growth in government, because both are meeting the needs of an expanding population, he warns, “If we grow education too fast, we’ll just have to cut in the future.”

This is absurd. While our lawmakers promote population growth and development, all which cause strains on our services and infrastructure, they are not willing to fund those things which are needed to support the growth and development?

Campbell fears lawmakers will squander the opportunity. “I find it appalling that with all the talk about tax cuts, there hasn’t been a lot of talk about investing more in public education.”
Bramble warns: “I don’t think the needs are mutually exclusive – if you don’t demand that everything goes your way. It is going to take people to step up and realize there are other priorities.”

Other priorities – like making sure the most wealthy of citizens and businesses receive tax breaks, right?

I do agree that people need to “step up” – but to demand that our money is spent on the people which is the highest priority there is. Medicaid, Education, and Transportation are all areas that need the benefit from this surplus.

Your Papers, Please – Experimenting in Utah

Yesterday in local radio news it was announced repeatedly throughout the day that police in Salt Lake would be stopping every motorist between certain streets from 10pm to 3am last night. This was a court-approved stop and search and it was publicized that each driver would be asked for their ID and that police would also be searching for DUI’s.

My suspicion is that the DUI excuse is just that – an excuse. I see this as an experiment towards future stop and searches, using Utah as the baseline. “Your papers, please” will become the standard request from officials at mandatory checkpoints.

I hope I am wrong, but somehow I don’t think so. Look at who is controlling our country, the Patriot Act, the military recruiting clause in the No Child Left Behind Act, and other measures that have been instituted since the reign of King George.

Divine Strake Test Delayed

The ditch has already been dug. The 700 tons of ammonium nitrate and fuel oil to fill it have already been purchased. But thankfully, the concerned voices of downwinders have delayed again the Pentagon’s intent to resurrect 10,000-foot mushroom clouds on our horizon.

The Department of Defense announced yesterday that the Divine Strake test would be delayed until at least “several months into 2007,” but that it would proceed at that point if it is determined that the blast can comply with the National Environmental Policy Act and there is a favorable ruling in the lawsuit brought by the Western Shoshone and Downwinders.

I’m Back!

After nearly three weeks of travel, I’m finally back!
I will be providing an extensive report of the Tucson Convention of the Green Party of the United States on the GPUT Live Journal Community (I’ll link from it here), complete with photos. I’ll also provide an update on the “Utah Situation”. Finally, I’ll provide a link to photos of stunning scenery from around the country.

I’m pleased that I was able to meet Daryl from Iowa, whose Live Journal Blog is The Candidate. (Hi Daryl!) I’m totally psyched about the Green Party’s direction and will be providing more and more information on what is going on around the country.

Confirmation of my suspicions

I now have confirmation of my suspicions that the unaffiliated Utah Green Group was lobbying delegates throughout the conference in Tucson to vote “no” for Tom King for GPUS Steering Committee.

Many delegates shared with me that this group of people circulated myths (a nice word for lie) about Tom and were able to convince many that he said things in his speeches that he in fact did not. Many of these delegates were angry that their states dictated to them, then, to vote “no” on Tom’s candidacy for this seat, after their delegations had already decided to vote for him. (It was close race. Tom missed winning a seat by a narrow margin, I have heard.) These delegates have offered their assistance to us in the upcoming effort to present our case to the NC.

Someone on Green Commons commented to one of my posts that one of the other group’s members “presented the key values very well in Tucson”. Nothing could be further from the truth with the type of behavior he and members of his group displayed in Tucson. While Tom and I and Kathy participated in every aspect of the convention, helping with the set up of projectors and other equipment, helping to set up tables for the plenary, presenting and attending workshops, attending committee meetings, etc., these folks were in fact NOT participating except by cornering very delegate they could to plant myths in their minds about the Desert Greens and our delegation present in Tucson. Additionally, they, along with their California allies, held closed door meetings during events at the convention to discuss strategy to perpetuate these myths. As stated in an earlier post, only when confronted with inquiries about this did we talk about the issue (in other words, we were there to participate in a convention and party business and education, not to backstab other delegates).

By virtue of these behaviors, I think it is obvious which people were displaying green values at this event and which people presented key values to the press but failed to do so during the workings of the convention itself.

As this case continues and the truth again unfolds I will provide updates.

For a page of linked documents to what happened in 2004 in Utah, go to 2004.

Dave Lippman and

Last night was the National Committee Meeting Fundraiser, featuring Dave Lippman, singer songwriter and comedian (with his act as George Shrub) and Anne Feeney, “union maid, hellraiser and labor singer”.

It was fantastic. I’ve seen Dave before but not Anne. If you ever have the chance to go see them, DO. It was great to hear good music and lyrics, be entertained and support our national party.

I was able to take a few photos:

The positive side

Now that I have presented the negative side of this weekend’s convention, while I will still be providing updates, I can move on to what most of the weekend was – a wonderful opportunity to see friends and make new ones, learn about various issues and projects being worked on, have face to face meetings with our committees, and get jazzed about what Greens are doing all around the country.

More in a few…..

Update on Tuscon

As stated in my previous posts, I will be providing accounts of each days’ activities at the Green Party National Committee Meeting in Tuscon, along with photos, upon my return to Utah in a few days.

Yesterday the California Delegation was instrumental in getting time on the agenda to allow both the unaffiliated Utah Green group and the affiliated Desert Greens delegation to “present their side” of the Utah situation.

The unaffiliated group spoke first, via their spokesperson (Jeff Beardall) who was not even known, let alone participating, in the Utah party until after the split when his services were secured to represent their group. Mr. Beardall presented a myriad of erroneous facts, coupled with contradictions to statements he made at last year’s National Meeting – all of which is on videotape.

The affiliated Desert Greens spokesperson, Tom King, provided some history of what happened in Utah to refute the myths that Mr. Beardall was portraying as truth.

After a comment period to hear from other delegates on the issue, it was left with a proposal that California will have to present into the appropriate format that an independent investigation via an “impartial” committee be conducted, which the Desert Greens fully supports. We have reservations, however, about the committee being truly “fair and impartial” and hope that the process will insure that. We feel that California is not being impartial by virtue of the fact that they and the unaffiliated Utah group produced a document and distributed it at the NC meeting filled with fallacies about the situation, without allowing for any other information from the affiliated group. If these folks really and truly wanted an impartial view, why did they do this? And why did they choose the national meeting and plenary time to put delegates on the spot to try to make an informed decision about the situation without time to fully examine ALL the facts? In my opinion, that is NOT a display of fairness and impartiality.

Finally, the Steering Committee Elections were held yesterday, in which Tom King was a candidate. He ran to help with the election process and also because our party supported him running for such an office, being supported as a vital addition to that committee. We have informally learned the results of the election, which will be announced in plenary today (I’ll publish the results then), but I have this to say: The unaffiliated group disrespectfully worked themselves around the plenary room all day yesterday, even during when speakers were talking, lobbying hard to get folks to be swayed to their position. We are fairly certain that they were telling delegates to not vote for Tom. We think this, although do not have hard evidence, due to the fact that some delegates told us that they wanted to vote for Tom but couldn’t because they were dictated by their states to not vote for him – state delegations which had just the day before indicated they would support him in the SC election, even after informally hearing both sides of the Utah situation.

Understand that we did not initiate or engage in any lobbying efforts to get people to be “on our side”. Instead, we waited for those astute enough to come to us and ask for our story, which we then provided.

Fair and impartial? I don’t think so.

The Desert Greens is in the process of producing a document with all supporting papers and other materials about the Utah situation and The document has been produced for individuals in the past who had the sense enough to find out for themselves what really happened. Since there are additions to the document, it will be announced when it’s revision is complete and available. We plan to make it available to each state party affiliated with the GPUS.
