Bush not received well in Argentina

Bush was not greeted warmly, but rather by “hot” protests, when he arrived for a gathering of Western Hemisphere leaders yesterday in Argentina. The event is the Summit of the Americas, a two-day, 34-nation gathering.

Hugo Chavez, President of Venezuela, is being very vocal about his opposition to the Bush administration and its attacks on Venezuela, including threats to assasinate Chavez.

Mass protests are expected throughout the summit.

Ken Sain has a post on the U.S. Administration’s plan for the next war – against Venezuela.

Tom’s Interview

An award winning journalist from Salt Lake, Jennifer Napier-Pearce, has started her own online news program,Inside Utah. Earlier this week she interviewed Tom on his experience with right wing talk show host Lars Larsen.

A sad occurence yesterday

(Update: See memorial page at: City Academy)

Yesterday our school community was affected by the news that a former student had died of a herion overdose.

John Phillips, a member of the first graduating class of the school where I teach, City Academy, was a kind and gentle human being, always respectful and pleasant, bright and intelligent, and well-liked by everyone in our school community.

John delivered an inspiring and emotional speech at City Academy’s graduation ceremony last spring as a member of our school’s very first graduating class. He spoke of his struggles and how our school community supported him throughout his high school experience. Although he at times felt he would not graduate from high school, he made it with the help from his devoted parents and members of our school community.

John was accepted for admission to the University of Utah and had enrolled and begun classes there.

I didn’t know John as well as others in our school community, having only taught him in one of my classes, but we had a good relationship and I respected and admired him for his respectful and gentle nature.

I will not choose at this time to delve into the problems with our society’s treatment of victims of substance abuse, but it is clear that John is one concrete example of how it isn’t working.

It’s going to be a tough next few days for our school, where most of our students and staff have been affected by this news.

The service to celebrate John’s life will be Saturday, November 5, 4pm, at our school:
City Academy
2416 East 1700 South , Salt Lake City

In lieu of flowers, people are asked to make donations to City Academy via Wells Fargo Bank.

Update on case of Polygamist Judge

Recently I wrote about a Utah Polygamist Judge‘s removal case. In today’s Deseret News, it looks like the Judicial Conduct Commission (JCC), which investigates allegations of misconduct by judges, has recommended the high court remove Steed from the bench, where he has served for 25 years in the primarily polygamous community of Hildale.

Tapestry Against Polygamy, a Utah group of women who are former polygamist wives and help other women to leave that lifestyle, filed the complaint against Steed.

Bigamy is a third degree felony. The Utah Supreme Court will now have to decide if the law will be upheld.

Utah Republicans decide to support food tax cut….but raise taxes elsewhere

A step in the right direction: Utah lawmakers consider axing food sales tax.

Repealing the food sales tax has been on the political agenda for more than 30 years but hasn’t been able to get through the Republican controlled legistlature here in Utah. Yesterday lawmakers, republicans included, finally recognized that this is an issue that needs serious examination.

The “catch” is, though, that there would be a revunue loss of $260 million.

So there is a proposal to raise tax on non-food items by 0.6 of a percentage point statewide.

These were some concerns cited in the article:
The proposal also was met with mixed response from advocacy groups present at the meeting. Advocates for the poor strongly favor it, while the Utah League of Cities and Towns and the Utah Association of Counties are strongly opposed without some sort of mitigation for the revenue losses.
There was also concern from Utah Issues, however, that focusing efforts on the complete removal of the sales tax could push the tax credit aside and that the end result will be nothing gets done.

Conservatives don’t want to lose their expected tax cuts and some businesses say it will hurt them.

Repealing the food tax is a good thing and long overdue. Governor Huntsman is looking at ways low-income Utah citizens will benefit from tax breaks. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out and who the changes will negatively affect the most. You can bet it won’t be the wealthy.

Wal-Mart

The Green Party of Utah will be showing the film “Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price” on Saturday, November 19.

Ken Sain wrote an article on WalMart and I commented on it with information on the recent smear campaign by WalMart against the filmmaker Robert Greenfield.

Today, Common Dreams has the article,Wal-Mart: Is This the Worst Company in the World? by Independent journalist Andrew Gumbel. In it, Gumbel explains how WalMart is going to great lengths to get Greenfield’s film shut down.

Are they scared? They should be because sometimes Davey Wins.

Joanne’s “Victory” Speech

I thought this warranted a separate post. I’ll have updates on news articles, etc. on the post below this one, but I wanted to separate Joanne Ivancic’s personal message.

Here message is, indeed, one of victory. I have never met her, as with many Greens, but I am proud of her and her Green Campaign. Here’s Joanne:
———————————–

Dear Friends, Family and Supporters:

I wanted to share some interesting news with you–and, since many of you couldn’t make it to the great party we had–my closing remarks.

First, the sad news. We didn’t win a seat on the Board of Alderman. As the published report shows, we got 5% of the total number of votes cast for aldermen (with each voter getting up to 5 votes).

UPDATE: Frederick, Maryland Alderman Elections- Green Ivancic is out; First openly gay elected

I found one article in the Frederick News Post which barely even mentions Joanne.

Ken Sain has an article on Joanne at his blog.
——————————————–

It took me awhile this morning, but I finally found something on the elections in my hometown county of Maryland.

Yesterday was the election for Mayor and Board of Alderman in Frederick City, Maryland.

I have been providing updates on Joanne Ivancic‘s campaign for Frederick City Board of Alderman. She is the first person from a third party to run for office there in decades.

Today’s WHAG, a Hagerstown NBC affiliate, reported on the race. It looks like Joanne didn’t get in, and I still do not have information on her totals.

The mayoral position was conceded by long time politician Ron Young (he was a 4-term mayor when I was younger) to Republican Jeff Holtzinger. However, the Board of Alderman will be democrat controlled with three out of the five positions having dems elected to them.

Here is the good news: The first openly gay person was elected to the Board of Alderman, David Koontz, a democrat.

I will provide an update as soon as I find out. It looks like the local papers there take their time getting things online.

UPDATE: Surprise, surprise: Guess who else will be a Green Party Panelist at film showing

Below this post I wrote about one of the GPUT’s co-coordinators, Shane Cutler, being a panelist at the showing of “This Divided State” at UVSC tomorrow (Wednesday) night.

Today we found out that Jeff Beardall will also be a panelist as a representative of the “Green Party”. Beardall is the person who stole the GPUT’s website and has wreaked havoc with the GPUT since December of 2004. A never-before-heard-of person, Beardall “appeared” on the scene shortly after the GPUT split.
You can read more at:
Beardall’s threats

Beardall also showed up in Tulsa and unsuccessfully attempted to unseat the recognized delegation from Utah. He has also appeared at various places in Salt Lake to harass and threaten members of the GPUT.

Beardall made a loud disturbance with another person while Moore was speaking at the Moore event (October 20, 2004) by unfurling a banner that said “Vote Nader”. This disturbance of Beardall’s appears in the film. He was escorted out of the arena. His partner called Michael Moore “chicken shit” in the films. This was prior to anyone ever heard of Beardall.

Steven Greenstreet, filmmaker of “This Divided State” and I had several email exchanges today over the panel. His final decision is to allow both Beardall and Shane to be panelists. I assured him that Shane and anyone else from the nationally affiliated GPUT would display the utmost respect and professionalism.

I just watched the film tonight. It is very professionally done and all sides of the issue are given equal time, presenting a very objective perspective. I am impressed.

And guess what?!!? The Salt Lake Radical Cheerleaders, , Pom Poms, Not Bomb Bombs, of which I am a member, as is Jen of Jen’s Journal, are also in the movie!

Steve Greenstreet has agreed to appear at the GPUT’s showing of the film on November 12. He will be speaking and will have some DVD’s on hand for those who wish to purchase it.

Unfortunately I cannot attend tomorrow’s event at UVSC. I’ll be anxious to hear what happens.

“This Divided State” Showing – GPUT on panel discussion

Steven Greenstreet’s film This Divided State – about the Michael Moore visit at Utah Valley State College (UVSC)- will be shown tomorrow, Wednesday, November 2nd at 6:00pm at UVSC Center Stage.

It’s being hosted by the UVSC Repulicans with a panel discussion afterwards with reps from the Republicans, Democarats, Libertarians, Socialists and Greens.

A Co-Coordinator of the Green Party of Utah, Shane Cutler, will be a panelist.

This should be interesting and I’ll be sure to post on the event itself.

The GPUT, ironically, is holding a showing of the same film on Saturday, Nov.12.
