Slag Site Cleanup in Our Neighborhood

Tom and I have been observing with curiosity and interest an excavation project near our home. We live just west of the Midvale, Utah line in West Jordan. Just east of that line (which is actually the Jordan River), is the land formerly owned by Sharon Steele, a mining company that dumped its tailings on this land. The Midvale Slag Superfund Site, a former smelting facility which covers 446 acres in Midvale, is right next to the Sharon Steele site. The site contains slag and hazardous smelting wastes, posing a threat to human health and the environment. It was added to the Superfund National Priorities List in 1991.

Election Day

Today is the day that Utah voters will elect mayors in almost all municipalities, along with city council members.

Today’s Utah Election News reports in one article that statewide about 10 percent of voters turned out for the primary elections, with inconsistencies in turnout throughout the state, and voter turnout today is expected to ramin inconsistent.

All municipal races in Utah are non-partisan.

The Boston Globe reports that Republicans will be put on line at polls today in governor and mayoral races throughout the country.

There are many Greens around the country in races today and I am sure that Ken Sain will have the latest results in those elections.

Barbara Streisand on Impeaching Bush

If there was ever a time in history to impeach a President of the United States, it would be now.

-Barbara Streisand

607,829 people have voted in the online Impeach Bush Campaign.
Barabara Streisand has come out in favor of this inititiave.

She continues:

In my opinion, it is two years too late … Shouldn’t war be an absolute last resort? We went to war because we were misled. And we should be angry because of the 2,000 American soldiers and the 200 armed coalition forces that have died. We should be livid because of the 15,000 American soldiers that have been horribly maimed and wounded. We should be disgusted because of the 30,000 innocent Iraqi civilians that have been killed and the 20,000 that are wounded after administration officials claimed that the US was going to liberate the Iraqi people. When does it stop? It stops with the indictment and impeachment of this corrupt, power-hungry, greedy group of incompetent leaders. How many more have to die before this happens?

GPUT co-coordinator quoted in UVSC paper

An article appeared today in NetXNews – Utah Valley State College’s online Newspaper entitled
UVSC College Republicans show “This Divided State”.

The article has a one line quote from GPUT co-coorindator Shane Cutler, who was a panelist in the discussion following the showing of the film.

Buy Local First Campaign

Nov. 12-Dec. 31, 2005: Buy Local, Organic, and Fair Made–Boycott Wal-Mart and the Chains. You can sign the pledge at: Organic Consumers.

A new program called Buy Local First has begun. It was started by the Utah Vest Pocket Business Coalition, a group of Utah busienss owners. Business members of the Buy Local First Campaign total more than 300. It’s free to join and it promotes a healthy community by advocating for consumers to spend their money in their local communities.

My friend has an activist retail shop that is part of this network.

Tom and I have a 501(c)(3) organization called Blue Sky Institute which has an arm on local consumerism. We had attempted to start a “Green Values Program” a few years ago but did not have the resources to continue it. We are happy to see that such a program has been initiated and implemented here in Utah.

The more of us that push this concept and educate people on why it is not a good idea to shop at the large corporations, the more likely there will be a paradigm shift back to the concept of local, community based economics.

I keep repeating this, but it needs to be repeated: Sometimes Davey wins……Eventually Davey will win.

Carnival of the Green has started

The first
Carnival of the Green has begun.

In my links on the left sidebar of this blog is a link to the
Carnival of the Green Schedule.

The first one is at City Hippy.
I had submitted my article on Utah’s Dumping Grounds but it wasn’t included the collection of articles. I submitted it within the time frame but when
I wrote to the organizers I found out that even though I sent it on Friday (the 4th – the criteria was to have articles submitted that were posted on our blogs between 10/21 and 11/4) my email wasn’t received or therefore opened until Saturday and so I didn’t qualify for the first session. Dang. Email delivery is so quirky sometimes! However, it will be in session #2. Yay! The bottom line is, though, this is a great thing that is happening. The more things like this that are organized, the more the green messages get out.

Jen’s Green Journal‘s article on Toxic Neighborhoods did get in to the first session!

I had experienced a very hectic and emotional week so I was behind on getting things done they way I want, including timelines for submissions of things required of me, therefore I was doing things almost all week at the last minute! Oh well, better luck next time!

It looks like Carnival of the Green will be a big success and very valuable. What a great concept!

When can we stop hanging our heads in shame?

Mary MacElveen, a VHeadline commentator, has written a poignant piece on the .recent attacks on Bush in Argentina.

It speaks for itself.

Private Fuel Storage Permitting Process Hits a Snag

Earlier this week a BLM official would not sign a permit to build a railroad spur leading to its nuclear waste storage facility on the land of the Goshute Indians in Tooele County, Utah.

Apparently there is a moratorium on land use and until that is lifted by Congress, or until the Air Force completes a resources study, according to the BLM official, he won’t sign the permit.

The article also refers to U.S. Senator Orrin Hatch’s “opposition” to the PFS site and he has publicly applauded the BLM’s efforts to “uphold the law”, placing an obstacle in the path of the further development of this site.

(Of note, however, is that Orrin Hatch still supports the building of the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository in Nevada….)

I am happy to see that obstacles such as this are occuring. It’s still a long road to getting PFS to completely go away, to getting Yucca Mountain shut down. Citizens across the nation do not want the waste transported through their communities. And these citizens are willing to put their bodies on the line in protest – me included. Keep the waste where it is.

Envrio-Ranchers and Walmart

I was reading earlier this week about some “enviro-ranchers” in southern Utah who have purchased land with the agreement that they will ranch 800 head of cattle. These ranchers are out of state wealthy environmentalists who use their (and others) capital to raise livestock in an environmentally responsible way – i.e., no grazing all over public lands, etc.

I asked my Green colleague Julian Hatch about this and he said that this is a common trend. But what surprised me the most was that Julian told me about some of the funding of efforts like this……hold onto your cowboy hats:

Walmart.

Yes, Walmart.

Apparently the giant coporation is amongst those that are funding environmental initiatives like environmental ranching. I had heard some time ago that Walmart was stepping up their efforts to be involved in environmentals issues, creating an environmental “division”.

Well, I don’t buy it. I think it’s all a PR ploy to get people to overlook the evils of this corporation such as:

  • the largest exploiters of sweat-shop labor
  • poor employment practices, including little or no benefits
  • anti-labor union
    and so on.

I’m wondering what Walmart’s recycling/reusing/reducing practices are? Should I go look in a Walmart dumpsters behind one of its stores? Does it sell recycled paper products? Does it only sell biodegradable household products?

Walmart needs to put its money where its mouth is. If it is going to start being environmentally responsible, at least on the surface, it needs to look at the whole picture and not just paint a pretty scene to get consumers to say “ooo….ah”.

If we keep pressing this and other issues surrounding Walmart, Davey will eventually be winning all the time.

  • Jen’s Green Journal has a post on it today about a place where you can take a survey to see what color your blog is. I took it. Mine turned out the same as hers, so I guess we have a lot in common!
