PROMINENT MORMONS WERE REIMBURSED FOR PROP 8
In what seems to be an endless line of embarrassments for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, it is now coming to light that several prominent Mormon figures were actually reimbursed for their efforts and participation on the Yes On 8 campaign.

Below is a list of several of them, brought to my attention by my good friend Reed Cowen (many thanks to him for this). The full list can be seen at http://cal-access.sos.ca.gov/Campaign/Committees/Detail.aspx?id=1302592&session=2007&view=expenditures and I highly recommend that everyone views the list to see who they recognize.

Lawrence Research (Gary Lawrence, Mormon pollster and Meridian contributor): $528,877.35

Eagle Foundation (a Mormon PAC set up by Bart Marcois and David Parker): $135,912.76

Glen Greener (former Salt Lake City Police Commissioner, Meridian contributor, and now a GOP operative and sometime Cali property developer): $50,236.42

Sonja Brown (Protectmarriage.com communications director): $41,844.00

Zion Multimedia Corp.: $2,000.00

Rob Wirthlin: $768.18

So what does this all mean for the LDS church? Well it’s still unclear, and the list of those who were reimbursed may be getting longer as more is unearthed. But until then, you can count on more and more outcries against this “loving and tolerant” religion.

Gaza 2009: We Will Never Forget

Common Ground Initiative’s Nemesis: The Sacred Ground Initiative

(Cross posted from Utah Legislature Watch)

This legislative session, there is a series of 5 bills, as has been written about on this blog, called “Common Ground Initiative”, which advocate for the provisions of Expanding Health Care, Fair Housing & Employment, Wrongful Deaths, The Domestic Partner Rights and Responsibilities Act and Clarifying Amendment 3 (repealing the portion of Amendment 3 which states “no other domestic union, however denominated, may be recognized as marriage or be given the same or substantially equivalent legal effect – would not change Utah’s definition of marriage).  Equality Utah is the organizing group behind this initiative.

Michael Mueller of Utahns for Marriage Equality :

There is phone banking, citizen lobbyist activities, and many other crucial activities they need are help with – now and throughout the year. As I have mentioned before, even though our group’s goal is full marriage equality for all Utahns, there is a long history in this country of marriages that are neither real marriages nor are they equal. In this case, these basic LGBT rights must be obtained whether or not marriage equality is obtained.

To counter-act the Common Ground Initiative, the Eagle Forum and the Sutherland Instituteare launching their very own copy cat initiative, the Sacred Ground Initiative. In a press release issued by these groups it was stated:

Following an unsuccessful campaign to dismantle traditional marriage in California, gay rights advocates are now turning their focus to Utah. Known for strong family values, Utahns are now being exposed to deceptive marketing campaigns based on a non-threatening appeal to “common ground.”

On Thursday, February 5th, these groups will present their Sacred Ground Initiative at an event titled “Stand Up To Protect Marriage” at Thanksgiving Point, State of the Union II: The Challenge to Family and Freedom.  This free and open to the public  event will be held at the Show Barn at Thanksgiving Point from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.  Speakers will include Paul T. Mero,  LaVar Christensen, primary author of Utah’s Constitutional Amendment in support of traditional marriage, and Lauralyn B. Swim, Sutherland benefactor and former member of the Young Women General Board of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

“Sutherland continues to defend the sacred ground of traditional marriage, and family as the fundamental unit of society,” said Institute President, Paul T. Mero.  ”This session will talk directly to Utahns about how the gay marriage controversy has come to our state and what responsible citizens can do to stand up for and be advocates to protect marriage and optimal family structures.”

Anyone can attend this event by obtaining seat reservations.  It has been advertised that participants must rsvp online, call (801) 355-1272, e-mail si@sutherlandinstitute.org, or visit www.sutherlandinstitute.org to reserve seats for the event.  I’m not sure what information they will take from you but I’m guessing they will be screening interested parties.

I am urging everyone who can to pursue attending this event.  Additionally, there will be a Protest and Infiltration of Sacred Ground Initiative Launch, the details which can be found here.

Urgent: Bennett’s $50 Billion boondoggle

This in from HEAL Utah today:

Take a minute to call Senator Bob Bennett (202) 224-5444.

Late Tuesday night, Utah’s own Sen. Bennett snuck in a provision to President Obama’s economic stimulus package that would allow as much as $50 BILLION of your tax dollars to be used as loan guarantees for construction of new nuclear reactors.

These loan guarantees could help fund projects like Aaron Tilton’s proposed Green River nuclear power plant. That means your tax dollars would finance the production and storage of high-level waste in Utah, and the enormous abuse of our water, just so states like California can turn on their lights (read more about why a Utah nuclear power plant will not likely power Utah here).

It’s not too late to stop this taxpayer handout. Please call Senator Bennett today (202-224-5444) and tell him how disappointed you are by his efforts to prop up the nuclear industry at the expense of ordinary Utahns. In an ultimate show of hypocrisy, Sen. Bennett says he plans to vote against the final economic stimulus package anyway. Tell Sen. Bennett you hope these nuclear loan guarantees are stripped from the ultimate package and that he can save face by working to undo his cover of night actions.

You can also email Sen. Bennett here: http://bennett.senate.gov/contact/emailmain.html, though a quick call is what’s most needed.

In these dire economic times, taxpayers should NOT be put on the hook for billions of dollars of risky nuclear reactor projects. Yet, that is exactly what Sen. Bennett’s nuclear loan guarantee plan would, well, guarantee. The Congressional Budget Office estimates half of new reactor projects will default on their loans. The banks won’t gamble their money on such a risky venture, but apparently Senator Bennett is willing to gamble ours.

What we do need is an economic stimulus package that will jumpstart the economy and provide jobs over the next two years. That is President Obama’s intention. Unlike the decade or so it takes for a nuclear reactor to get off the ground, investing in solar, geothermal, wind, and efficiency will produce jobs and clean energy in the next 1-2 years. Sen. Bennett has said he wants any stimulus package to protect taxpayers, yet his nuclear pork puts taxpayers at risk and helps no one but his industry buddies.

Please call Sen. Bennett today (202) 224-5444. Here’s a sample message you can leave:

“Hi my name is ____ and I live in ____. I am calling to tell Sen. Bennett how disappointed I am that he has worked to put up $50 billion of taxpayer money for the nuclear industry in the economic stimulus package. The banks won’t gamble their money on nuclear projects, so why is Sen. Bennett willing to gamble so much of ours? I hope that these nuclear loan guarantees are stripped from the stimulus plan and that Sen. Bennett works to help taxpayers, not just his nuclear buddies. Thank you.”

After you make your call, don’t forget to sign up for our citizen lobby training next week: http://healutah.org/lobbyrsvp.

Rain Doesn’t Dampen Equal Rights Event

Cross posted from Utah Legislature Watch, with additional footage

A couple of hundred people put up their umbrellas today and came out for the “Common Ground” March and Rally today as a kick off to the upcoming Utah legisative session. Equality Utah:

During the 2009 General Session ot the Utah State Legislative Session, Equality Utah will be introducing 6 bills known as the Common Ground Initiative. These bills will expand on rights and protections for the LGBT community living in Utah.

Quotes from a Salt Lake Tribune article today on the event with regards to the Common Ground Initiative:

These five bills would make it illegal to fire an employee or evict a tenant for being gay or transgender, provide wider rights for inheritance and health insurance and give same-sex partners the ability to sue in cases of wrongful death, among other things.

“The era of discrimination, fear, hatred and prejudice is coming to an end, said openly gay Unitarian Church Reverend Sean Dennison, addressing the crowd. “I would like to see Utah take the surprising step and lead the way.

A recent poll shows that most Utahns favor workplace and housing protections for gay or transgender residents as well as health-insurance availability for same-sex partners.

This may the year that ground-breaking legislation on equal rights breaks through.

I attended the beginning of rally at the end of the march at the capitol buiding.  I was performing with Utah’s Radical Cheerleaders “Pom Poms Not Bomb Bombs” as was Utah Legislature Watch Co-Founder and Auther Jenni Killpack-Knutsen.

Here are two videos of the Radical Cheerleaders:

Granny D is 99 today

Today is Doris "Granny D" Haddock’s 99th birthday. She is celebrating with friends today in Peterborough, New Hampshire, and will celebrate again on the 28th in the NH Governor’s office –something of a New Hampshire tradition now.

She will be coming out here to Arizona in a week and a half to get some warm walks and to work on a little writing.

Some of you have sent reports and memories of what you have been up to during the last eight difficult years, and I will have them printed out for her to read and admire. We’ll try to do something to put them all together. (It’s not too late, by the way, to add your story –email me by return post.)

If you want to wish her a happy birthday, consider doing so on the Facebook page a friend has set up for her. I’ll make sure she sees them. If you don’t do Facebook, send an email ( Dennis Burke <burke@fastq.com>) and I’ll print it out for her. She does have email, but it gets backlogged terribly.  She has a phone, but she would kill me if I asked everyone to call today, as she has a goal of calling 100 members if the NH Legislature today –she is pushing a state bill for campaign finance reform.

Two Utahns and others: The First 100 Days: What would a Green Administration look like?

https://i0.wp.com/www.gp.org/first100/wp-content/themes/connections-reloaded/img/train.jpg

The Green Party has asked Green leaders from all over the US to tell America what a Green President of the United States would do during the ‘First 100 Day’s of his or her administration.

Green candidates and members of the Green Party’s Speakers Bureau submitted video clips and short essays to describe what they’d do if elected to the White House and what Green steps President Obama should take to resolve the nation’s problems.

“This is our Inauguration Day gift to Barack Obama and to America.  We celebrate the landmark election of America’s first African American president, but we’re worried that Barack Obama will retreat from his promises of change, especially given some of his Cabinet appointments.  That’s why we’ve collected these recommendations from prominent Green Party members,” said Sanda Everett, co-chair of the Green Party of the United States.

Writing to Obama

Yesterday I held a civics lesson for my 10th grade advisory students where I teach on the "Power of the President".  I was given some materials by a colleague to use, including a cute little video on "brain pop" and some other items for discussion.

One thing I had the students do was write a letter to President Obama.  First I gave them the entire transcript of his speech for reference.  Happily, most of them had watched his inaugural speech already.  The prompts I gave them included:
"I like it when you said…." and "I wish you would have said….".  It was a great exercise in civic engagement.  Some students finished their letters but others really wanted more time to do a thorough job, so I anticipate more coming in to me today.  We will send them in separate envelopes and await replies.

I will share some of those letters here over the weekend.

Obaman’s Inaugural Address

Obama’s Inaugural Address: The Full Text

My fellow citizens: I stand here today humbled by the task before us, grateful for the trust you have bestowed, mindful of the sacrifices borne by our ancestors. I thank President Bush for his service to our nation, as well as the generosity and cooperation he has shown throughout this transition.

Forty-four Americans have now taken the presidential oath. The words have been spoken during rising tides of prosperity and the still waters of peace. Yet, every so often the oath is taken amidst gathering clouds and raging storms. At these moments, America has carried on not simply because of the skill or vision of those in high office, but because We the People have remained faithful to the ideals of our forbearers, and true to our founding documents.

So it has been. So it must be with this generation of Americans.

That we are in the midst of crisis is now well understood. Our nation is at war, against a far-reaching network of violence and hatred. Our economy is badly weakened, a consequence of greed and irresponsibility on the part of some, but also our collective failure to make hard choices and prepare the nation for a new age. Homes have been lost; jobs shed; businesses shuttered. Our health care is too costly; our schools fail too many; and each day brings further evidence that the ways we use energy strengthen our adversaries and threaten our planet.

These are the indicators of crisis, subject to data and statistics. Less measurable but no less profound is a sapping of confidence across our land — a nagging fear that America’s decline is inevitable, and that the next generation must lower its sights.

Today I say to you that the challenges we face are real. They are serious and they are many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But know this, America — they will be met.

On this day, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord.

On this day, we come to proclaim an end to the petty grievances and false promises, the recriminations and worn-out dogmas, that for far too long have strangled our politics.
