WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Consumer advocate Ralph Nader said on Sunday that he is launching another long shot independent campaign for president of the United States.
Nader, who will turn 74 this week, announced his presidential bid on NBC’s “Meet the Press” saying that neither the Democrats nor the Republicans are addressing the problems facing Americans.
Nader also ran for president in 2000 when he got about 2.7 percent of the national vote as the Green Party candidate and played a role in deciding the final presidential outcome. He also ran as an independent in 2004 and got only a tiny fraction of the vote.
Many Democrats blame Nader’s participation in the close race between Democrat Al Gore and Republican George Bush in 2000 for tipping the election in favor of Bush. They believe that but for Nader’s name on the ballot in Florida, Gore would have been the clear winner and president today instead of Bush.
Nader called Washington “corporate occupied territory” that turns the government against the interest of its own people.

That’s too bad
I agree with those who believe he cost Al Gore the election in 2000 (and think of where we would be on global warming, not to mention foreign policy which pushes global warming initiatives, instead of war) if Gore had won.
It also makes me feel a bit of embarrassment for Nader. This shows how out of touch with reality he has gotten. He would better serve the country by trying to influence the policy of either of the Democratic front runners than launching this campaign.
Incidentally, I hate saying all of this, because I like the guy. Doesn’t make what he’s doing intelligent. Heh. Politics can be weird that way.

With all due respect: Actually Nader did not cost Gore the election – Jeb Bush and Katherine Harris did with Florida fiasco by keeping thousands of voters from being able to go to the polls and the Supreme court cost Gore the election by selecting George W. Bush. Gore cost himself the election by conceding in the end. Nader did not spoil the election. The voters and politicians who had control spoiled it. It’s a fact that people should research instead of continuing to believe in and spread this myth. It’s just not true.
I personally am going to dedicate my campaigning efforts to the nominated Green Party candidate. That will not be Nader.
Is there any doubt that nader is a
megalomaniac? If he thinks Gore or Kerry would have been like Bush he is delusional. Hang it up Ralph.
It’s too bad that I agree with you, deesings, that the Green Party would be better off with an actual Green at its helm for the election. Because watching the little Democratic ants run around and around in a fury while Nader pours boiling water on their two-party hill is the best entertainment I’ve had all week.
Just please, please, let it not be another Cobb, tiptoeing around trying to kiss the DP’s ass for reasons known only to himself. Let it be somebody willing to run a real campaign with whatever resources they’ve got, however meagre.

Nobody in their right mind believes that anyone cost Gore the election but Gore and the GOP. Even Democrats don’t believe it, for all their pathetic whining about Nader. If their leaders believed it, you can be damn sure that Democratic policy over the last eight years would be damn different than it is now. So would the way we vote.
Democrats should at least audition a new scapegoat, since it’s clearly beyond them to actually fix their damn party.

Algore couldn’t even win his own home state. If he had have won Tennessee, Florida wouldn’t have mattered. Nader may hurt Green Party candidate Cynthia McKinney who instead of getting perhaps 0.000001% of the vote now may end up getting only 1.0×10^-10 percent of the vote.

Nader in 2000
Anyone who actually believes that if Nader had not been a candidate for President that Al Gore would have been President is really naive. I love ya Dee, but Naderites and their myopic naivete gave us eight years of George W. Bush. Though conservative idiots like Ken Bingham certainly appreciate the naivete of Nader supporters. I for one, don’t.
Nader supporters gave us an even more conservative supreme court, a degradation of our civil rights, a promotion of pre-emptive war and of the promotion of torture as a legitimate interrogation technique.
The legacy of George W. Bush is the legacy of Ralph Nader. His failure to see that exposes him as either being rediculously narcissistic or just plain stupid. Either way, Nader will go down in history as someone who contributed to our Republic’s demise, rather than it’s ascendency.

And your party is the party of cowardice, that cannot take responsibility for itself and must have scapegoats to cover up its own eager conspiring in the agenda of Republicans.
It’s no surprise that forty million or so Americans don’t bother voting, given that the only choices they see in most of the mainstream media are The War Party and The Other War Party. The naive people are the people who reward the Democratic Party with more money, more votes, more adoration no matter how many times it back stabs them and fucks them over.
