Green Party Platform – Revised

The Platform Committee of the Green Party of the United States has published a draft of its revision of the platform which can be read here.  I assisted a little with the education section.

The goal of the revision was to reduce the number of pages in the document to a more concise piece.

Health Care

As time passes I become more and more frustrated with the health care system in the U.S.

Recently I found out that my 18 year old pregnant daughter is facing open heart surgery. On top of the emotional shock and drain this is causing on her and me, the amount of “stuff” she is going through with doctors and insurance is unbelievable. Because she is 18 and not in school, she was just informed the other day that she would not be covered on her dad’s insurance. She turned 18 in December and was told (again just the other day) that not only would she not be covered, but all doctor’s bills that this insurance company had paid would be billed to her to have to pay. This will amount to thousands of dollars.

She is pregnant with no job and now newly diagnosed heart disease.

We are going to see if her state insurance (which served as her secondary insurance as a pregnant teen) will cover those bills, but who knows……

To put it bluntly: Health Care in the U.S. sucks.

One of the many reasons I am a member of the Green Party is because of its position on health care, particularly the section on Universal Health Care:

The United States is the only industrialized nation in the world without a national health care system. The current system’s high costs and widely recognized failures demand that bold steps be taken. The Green Party supports a universal, comprehensive, national single-payer health insurance program as the only solution to the current disastrous for-profit system.

My new role in the GPUS

Recently I was elected as a co-chair of the Green Party of the United States Peace Action Committee. This committee does the peace work for the national party and helps facilitate positions statements and organizes actions and participates in national calls to action.

The Peace Action Committee (GPAX) of the Green Party of the United States (GPUS) exists to facilitate the planning and achievement of peace and justice action proposals adopted by the Green Party, and to support and promote the Party’s Anti-War candidates and agenda.

Current projects are centered around the War in Iraq, Sudan (Darfur), and Impeachment.

Subjects:

Education

A quality education should be guaranteed to everyone, including equal access to resources such as books, school facilities that work, and great teachers who are paid enough to stay in the profession.

Environment (including nuclear issues)

I love the earth and all life. I have a respect for the diversity of life and our ecosystem. I advocate for cleaner energy, greener building standards, and more restrictions on development and growth. I would like to see improvements in our recycling programs, mass transportation and bicycle trails. I advocate for the development of walkable communities. All of this would have less impact on our environment and improve the health of its life, including that of humans.

I feel strongly that non-violence must begin at the very local level, beginning with family and local schools, towns, cities, counties and states. I feel that schools are not the place for military recruitment and therefore am opposed to the provision in the No Child Left Behind Act that permits recruiters to request student records for recruiting purposes. Schools are for children to learn – not to be recruited.

I strongly advocate for the development of peace resolutions in schools, municipalities, and county governments so that all citizens and policy makers “walk the talk”.  I advocate for abolishing militarism is all aspects of our lives.

Current Spending and Funding:

First and foremost, I believe that current funding that is being spent on building new roads needs to be adjusted so that less funding is allocated for new roads and more funding allocated to improving mass transit, including increasing bus routes and their frequency.

California’s Proposal to the GPUS

The Proposal by California to the GPUS on Utah is now in the official discussion phase on the GPUS National Committee discussion list.

There are insconsistencies and myths throughout the proposal. Here are examples:

1. The title of the proposal itself is misleading:

Complaint Against the GPUS, cont’d

A couple of days ago, Texas withdrew its proposal to conduct in independent investigation regarding the Complaint Against the GPUS, leaving the California proposal intact, yet with the “modificaiton” that only one person from each Utah group be included in an “independent investigation”.

Sorry, this still doesn’t fly.

There is NO WAY such an investigation would be “independent” or unbiased.

Word is now that California and Texas are working on a joint proposal. All I can say is that the proposal will not be substantial unless it totally supports a completely independent and unbiased investigation – OUTSIDE of the GPUS. This means that no one connected in any way with the Green Party or its members should be involved. Period.

NC DELEGATES: SUPPORT AN OUTSIDE INVESTIGATION.
