Skin Cancer

My dad scared me today.

I called him as I always do on Saturdays at 9am. He answered the phone as usual and after we exchanged greetings, he said “Well, my surgery was a success!”

Uh……what????

Shocked, I said “What surgery?”
“Didn’t I tell you?” Dad replied.
“No you didn’t!”

He proceeded to tell me that he had had a malignant basal cell carcinoma (BCC) removed from his ear. He had complained about it when I was there at Christmas, but never mentioned it to me after. They had to graft skin from his thigh to place on the part of his ear where the cancer was removed.

The good news: They got it all.

My dad has had issues with skin cancer ever since I was a child. One of my earliest memories was when I was 6 years old and my dad had a cancer removed from his head, which he had to keep bandaged for weeks.

Dad said he feels guilty for not wanting to go out into public with the way his ear looks at the moment.
“I should just focus on the good part…..they got it all.” I chuckled. At 76 my dad is healthy and just as cute as ever.

I’m sure that my dad’s absent-mindedness had him forget to tell me about the procedure (he’s always been like that) because he usually tells me of these things.

Needless to say, I have promptly written to my siblings with the request to please inform me of any surgeries or procedures anyone in the family has scheduled……just in case my dad forgets!

Salt Lake’s events – Rosa Parks Day and World Aids Day

Members of the NAACP took a bus rideon a 1953 bus in downtown Salt Lake in honor of the 50th anniversary of the day that Rosa Parks refused to give her seat on a bus to a white man.

I found an article in the Salt Lake Tribune about a “leadership breakfast” held yesterday in recognition of
World Aids Day. While the cause is noble, I find it odd that a fancy breakfast in a fancy corporate hotel was held. I cannot help but think that a low-cost event would have been just as effective and the money that would normally be spent on a swank affair could be donated to the Utah Aids Foundation. Perhaps the cost of the event was absorbed in some other way, the article did not say.

At any rate, the article stated that in Utah, the HIV numbers have tripled since 2001, from 36 that year to 102 projected for 2005, a startling figure. Yes, more resources are needed to address this issue.

“Keep the Promise” – World Aids Day – Info and Local Events

World Aids Day December 1

According to UNAIDS estimates, there were 37.2 million adults and 2.2 million children living with HIV at the end of 2004, and during the year 4.9 million people became newly infected with the virus. Around half of all people who become infected with HIV do so before they are 25 and are killed by AIDS before they are 35. Around 95% of people with HIV/AIDS live in developing nations. But HIV is a threat to all men, women and children on all continents around the world.
Started in 1988, World AIDS Day is about increasing awareness, education and fighting prejudice. World AIDS Day is important in reminding people that HIV has not gone away, and that there are many things still to be done.

Soymilk

The only soy milk I’ve been able to drink is Soy Dream because I am sensitive to carrigeenan which all other soy milk has in it – Soy Dream was the only milk that didn’t.

Until recently.

When I opened my new case of Soy Dream, I was surprised to see a new package with “new and improved taste!” on it. I looked at the ingredients and, to my horror, found carrigeenan in it! Ack!

I wrote to the company – that was two weeks ago – and have not heard one word. My husband is content to drink what we purchased, so we didn’t return it. Yesterday we went to the grocery store and saw that there was a close out sale on all the old packages of Soy Dream, so we bought them all.

The person we buy our bulk food from (he runs a food buying club) has offered to let me use his equipment to make my own soy milk. I may have to take him up on that.

Relapse

So I was feeling pretty good yesterday and then I had a relapse today. I barely made it through work. I just ate two cloves of garlic (raw) with my dinner, took vitamin C, and some other vitamins and I’ll be in bed soon. It’s unusual for me to get colds back to back, but that’s what has happened the past month. My immune system must be doing some weird things causing me to be more susceptable to “stuff”.

I often feel kind of “cold-ish” right before my periods (when I have them), so I’m guessing that the hormonal stuff I’ve been experiencing could be contributing to the weakened immune system…..
