Green Party National Meeting – Photos of Ralph Nader Event

The feature for the Green Party National Annual Meeting on Saturday, July 14 was Ralph Nader, speaking to the issue of ballot access and and challenges to ballot access.

Prior to the event, this delegate from Georgia picketed outside to urge Nader to seek the Green Party *nomination* for President (2008) and not merely an endorsement by the Green Party:

Nader’s presidential campaign was pulled from the ballot in PA in 2004 which resulted in a legal battle which is still continuing, including the state trying to collect money from the Nader campaign.   At the end of his speech, Nader auctioned two of his books which raised a few thousand dollars for the GPUS.  You can view videos at these sites:

Green Party National Meeting – Photos of Entertainment

Every night at the GPUS National Annual Meeting there was entertainment – artist after artist after artist, mostly local from PA.  It was great.  Tom and I found it difficult to stay up every night for all the music, but we did the first night and were glad we did.  Each night we heard a variety of styles of music and enjoyed it all.  It was hard to choose a favorite, but we really liked Tom Nielson, activist folksinger songwriter. who performs and political and activist events all over.

Green Party National Meeting – Photos of Some Workshop and Meeting Sessions

One of the components of the Annual National Meeting is the offering of workshops for Delegates and state party members to learn about issues, committee work, and other items relevant to Green work.  Below are photos I took of the sessions I was able to attend.

Green Party National Meeting – Photos of Presidential Candidate Forum

A Forum was held at the Green Party of the United States Annual National Meeting on Friday, July 13, 2007 for people who have thus far declared their intentions to seek the Green Party of the United States 2008 Nomination for President of the United States.  There were several candidates who either do not yet belong the Green Party or just joined the Green Party over the course of the National Meeting.  However, over half of the candidates have been active Green Party members.

I will be posting later about two big names that gave presentations at this year’s National Meeting who many in the GPUS are attempting to pursuade them and ultimately the GPUS to run on the 2008 Green ticket.

Here are photos I took and links to You Tube Videos that California Delegate Mike  Feinstein Produced.  You can watch the videos to get an idea of each person’s platform.

Green Party National Meeting – Photos of Plenary Sessions

The GPUS National Annual Meeting in Reading, PA ran from July 12 – 15 with workshops, meetings, presentations and plenary of delegates from each state.  The Plenary began Friday, July 13 and held 4 sessions through Sunday.  Each session had a packed agenda, including presentations from GPUS staff, from committees, from states and caucuses, and from delegates presenting issues and proposals for discussion and vote.  We also held Steering Committee Elections to elect four new GPUS Co-Chairs.  A big focus of this year’s agenda items also centered around the 2008 presidential elections and ballot access.

We normally have tables for the delegates with official nameplates for each state during plenary sessions.  There were some logistical difficulties, however, and we ended up with only chairs resulting in not being able to use our nameplates – but we made do!

Each plenary session began with a roll call of states to make sure there was quorum.  Each session had at least two facilitators.  A group of folks with orange armbands served as peacekeepers.  Each presentor and each person who joined the stack for questions were timed to ensure the sessions flowed smoothly.  Overall, it did!

This year we welcomed two new state parties:  Montana and West Virginia.

Green Party National Meeting – Photos of First Annual 5k Walk

Tom and I participated in the first Annual Green Party 5K Walk in Reading, Pennsylvania on Saturday, July 14.  Through our donations (the fee to participate) we collectively raised, with other Greens, over $300 for the national party – and had fun while doing it!  Below are some photos, along with the plaque in the park where we walked.

Almost home – view of America

Today is my birthday – my 48th birthday.  I am spending it on the road (for the last three weeks) traveling about the country and seeing lots of people and lots of the United States.

Tom and I are almost home, having stopped in Nebraska last night for the night.  In the three weeks we have been on vacation we have seen thousands of miles of the U.S., having our eyes opened – again – to what is out there,  The beauty of nature, the people, the politics.

We spent 5 days traveling in the northern U.S., seeing the Great Lakes along the way and all the beauty of that part of the country.  Our destination – Reading, PA.

We then spent 5 days with Greens from all over the U.S. in an exciting Annual National Meeting which included discussion of vision, collaborating on issue strategiziing, and hearing Ralph Nader and Cynthia McKinney speak.

We spent 10 days with my family in Maryland – my parents, all my children, my siblings, my grandson – a wonderful time we all had together.  I learned I am going to be a grandmother – again!

We walked with Cindy Sheehan, Medea Benjamin, Ray McGovern, Col. Ann Wright, The Rev. Lennox Yearwood – and 300 other friends from all over the U.S. in Washington D.C.to the capitol where 60 people were arrested in John Conyers’ office in a sit-in to demand that Impeachment of Bush and Cheney begin.

We have been spending the last few days on the road again – this time going a little faster to get home since we are tired, but oh so grateful to have had all the experiences we have had this time around.  We come home eager to rest a bit, tend to the garden, reunite with our activist community and get back to work with our renewed vision and energy to continue to educate others on the importance of saving our planet through our peace and justice work.

Over the next week I will be posting photos and movies of our experiences.

Subjects:

Education

A quality education should be guaranteed to everyone, including equal access to resources such as books, school facilities that work, and great teachers who are paid enough to stay in the profession.

Environment (including nuclear issues)

I love the earth and all life. I have a respect for the diversity of life and our ecosystem. I advocate for cleaner energy, greener building standards, and more restrictions on development and growth. I would like to see improvements in our recycling programs, mass transportation and bicycle trails. I advocate for the development of walkable communities. All of this would have less impact on our environment and improve the health of its life, including that of humans.

Peace

Blog Posts:

I feel strongly that non-violence must begin at the very local level, beginning with family and local schools, towns, cities, counties and states. I feel that schools are not the place for military recruitment and therefore am opposed to the provision in the No Child Left Behind Act that permits recruiters to request student records for recruiting purposes. Schools are for children to learn – not to be recruited.

I strongly advocate for the development of peace resolutions in schools, municipalities, and county governments so that all citizens and policy makers “walk the talk”.  I advocate for abolishing militarism is all aspects of our lives.

Transportation

Current Spending and Funding:

First and foremost, I believe that current funding that is being spent on building new roads needs to be adjusted so that less funding is allocated for new roads and more funding allocated to improving mass transit, including increasing bus routes and their frequency.

Living Green

Yesterday I helped table at the LIVE GREEN sustainability festival in Salt Lake City. I was most impressed by the music group Shake Your Peace, a “sustainable music” group. Their website is wind powered, they do bicycle tours and power their music by bicycle power! How green!

Here are some photos of yesterday’s event.

Green Party Speakers Bureau

Yesterday I received a call from the Green Party of the United States Media Team which issued an invitation to me to be on the GPUS Speakers Bureau.  I was interviewed on tape last year by the national media team at the GPUS Annual National Meeting in Tucson, AZ.  I also was a speaker at the GPUS Women’s Caucus Press Conference (link to video clip) at the same National Meeting.

I want to accept.  I need more confidence, though.  And I way need more knowledge on issues which I continually strive to do through reading, listening and talking to people.

Thinking out loud:  I’m not always a confident speaker unless I have a script.  But then what can give me more confidence than just jumping in and doing it?  I am told that I present myself well at events where I give speeches.

When I ran for Salt Lake County Council in 2006 my issues were varied, but primarily focused on women’s issues and transportation.  I can speak passionately about those issues and want to learn more about those issues so I can serve as a more informed speaker.

I’m inclined, then, to accept.

To be continued…….
