Tax increase voted for in November not going for what was intended….

This is precisely why I did not vote for the proposal to increase taxes for transportation. I felt from the beginning that the language was too vague and that would leave it open to interpretation and spending money on things I don’t want my tax money spent on. Apparently there is a lot of discussion by county officials and conflict about where to spend the money from the additional tax revenue.

An excerpt from the article, County may alter transit priorities:

Voters in November approved the quarter-cent tax increase by a margin of 64 percent to 36 percent. Although the ballot language didn’t specifically say what type of projects the money should fund, several opinion polls showed Salt Lake County voters wanted the money to go to transit.
But out of the 34 projects on the draft list, 29 are for roads.

Busy Times – Part 2

I have been busy working on the website for a Green Party Presidential Candidate. She has not officially announced yet but is expected to do so soon. Our team is in its beginning stages of planning the campaign. There are exciting times ahead.

I have completed setting up the website. There is still a lot of development to do, but the framework is there.

I am excited to be part of this campaign and will post here when it is launched.

Busy Times – Part 1

I haven’t been posting as much as usual because this is a busy time for me, professionally as well as personally.

As a musician, performer, and director, the holiday season is packed with shows and other events.

Personally, I have been preparing goodie bags for my co-workers in my department. This year I oversee a department of 7 people. I made each person a bag with organic dried goodies from my garden and framed photos of nature scenes I took with my digital camera. This all took more time to put together than just walking into a store and buying gifts, but it was socially repsonsible gift giving since I used goodies from my garden that I know for sure are pesticide-free, photos I took myself, and gently used frames, since I buy almost all my stuff from thrift stores.

I’m also getting ready for my trip to Maryland, making the family calendars for everyone in my family. I continued the tradition that my mother started of giving everyone calendars, with a twist: I provide homemade calendars with photos that I have archived digitally from old photo albums and current photos and make collages on each month, reflecting birthdays and anniversaries.

And, of course, I am eagerly awaiting the moments to see my family again and hold my new grandson.

aarrgghh!!!

I HATE HOT FLASHES!!!!

I feel better now.

Another Way to Give This Winter

From HEAL Utah:

Every winter, HEAL Utah works to raise money to help cover the costs of heating fuel for those Goshutes who were on the frontlines of the fight to keep Private Fuel Storage from turning Skull Valley into a high-level nuclear waste dump. Our efforts are a drop in the bucket compared to the economic development that needs to happen on the reservation, but the support does make a difference to those members of the tribe needing some assistance during the winter months.

If you’d like to contribute to this effort, you can donate online here: https://www.merchantamerica.com/healutah/echopay/. If you’d prefer to send in a check, please make it out to HEAL Utah and write “Goshute Support” in the memo (send it to: HEAL Utah, 68 S Main St, Suite 400, SLC, UT 84101). We will pass through 100% of the money we raise from this effort to the Goshutes to help cover winter heating costs.

The defeat of the Private Fuel Storage proposal for Skull Valley was a major victory for Utah this year. We are thankful to those Goshutes who had the foresight and courage to fight for the integrity of their land and the health of their people, rather than sell it to the highest bidder. As Utahns, we are thankful not to have the nation’s de facto high-level nuclear waste dump in our state. As Americans, we are hopeful this victory is a step in the right direction towards fair and equitable energy policies that don’t leave the poor and politically powerless shouldering the nation’s toxic burdens.

Whatever you can contribute will make a difference this winter: https://www.merchantamerica.com/healutah/echopay/. Thanks for your support,

Agents decide who are illegal immigrants (raid in Utah) by skin color

In Utah, DHS Raids Raise Concerns
By Justin Rood – December 13, 2006, 1:16 PM

A troubling report from the DHS immigration raids yesterday, from the Salt Lake (Utah) Tribune. In this case, DHS agents allegedly separated workers by their skin color — light-skinned were considered citizens, dark-skinned got scrutiny. Predicatably, they swept up at least one dark-skinned U.S. citizen up with immigrant workers:

If only for a few minutes, Maria felt like an ”illegal alien” in her homeland – the United States of America. Continue reading

Army is Broke

The Smirking Chimp posts on an article that should have been on every news front page in the U.S.:
The Army, despite its $168 billion budget, is out of money and being forced to cannibalize operations

War on Terror will last for another 100 years

Looks like the Haliburtons of the world have their plan: The War on Terror will last 100 years

The American people need to prepare for a long-duration war against radical Muslims who are set to fight for 50 to 100 years to create an Islamist state in the region, a top Pentagon strategist in the war on terror says.
“We’re in a generational war. You can try and fight the enemy where they are and where they’re attacking you, or prevent them and defend your own homeland,” said Gen. Schissler, deputy director for the war on terrorism within the strategic plans office of the Pentagon’s Joint Staff.
“But that’s not enough to stop it. We’ve got to break the chain, and that’s … the ideology. We really need to show the errors in Islamist extremist thinking.”

Dems will approve request more money for Iraq War

Bush to seek $100 bln more war funds: House report

Senior Democrats, who take control of both houses of Congress next year, have indicated they would support additional funds for U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, even though many want a phased withdrawal to begin in 2007.

In other words they [the Dems] are afraid to oppose their corporate masters.

Creating Jobs Excuse for Dems to Increase Military Spending

We have to keep doing stupid stuff because we are too stupid to figure out how to create real, meaningful jobs in the U.S. Not surprisingly, the Dems want to spend MORE money on war “to create jobs”:

Democrats Expected to Increase U.S. Military Spending

The House of Representatives passed the annual defense authorization bill 396-31, with only 30 Democrats voting against it. The same bill passed 96-0 in the Senate.

“The issue is jobs, pure and simple,” Hellman said. “The F-22, as its builders will proudly tell you, represents 1,000 corporations in 42 states around the country. That represents a huge number of jobs.”
