At my school every student has to serve on a committee. Committees do important work for the school and wider communities.
I have the most awesome-est committee (of course!). It’s the social committee!
Here are some photos of three events our committee has organized and successfully implemented (and totally student-run):
Haunted House
Harvest Danve
Harvest Feast
Future events include:
– a chocolate fountain-fest
– battel of the bands
– valentine’s dance
– talent show
– spring fling dance
– graduation dance
It’s really a lot of fun and I have great student organizers.

My voalists at school recently performed for the Gandhi Alliance for Peace’s Night of 1000 dinners. They sang “What a Wonderful World” and “Blowin’ in the Wind”. They sang very well. The boy in the photos I have been training for three years now. He is really blossoming.

A leader of the Berkeley Free Speech Movement, Mario Savio, was arrested. One-third of the 27,000 students, along with faculty, were on strike protesting to preserve their first amendment right to distribute political literature and organize on campus. A faculty resolution passed (824 to 115) supporting the rapidly growing Free Speech Movement.

My Advisory students have organized a community holidy giving project. We are excited because a local major tv station is coming to interview us and get footage on Thursday.
City Academy has launched the second annual “Giving Tree” Project. The School will be collecting these new/nearly new items to be distributed to the needy in the Salt Lake Community:
* mittens
* gloves
* scarves
* sweaters
* socks
* earmuffs
* stockings (Stuffed with soap, combs, hairbrushes, toothbrushes, floss and paste, etc.)
* small toys (Small stuffed animals, etc.)
* candy
All items should be brought to the school between December 5 and 15 – 2416 East 1700 South. Donations will also be collected at the City Academy Holiday Follies.
The recipient will be Hildegarde’s Pantry at the Jubilee Center, a project of the Episcopal Church in Salt Lake City and that caters to the low-income and homeless.

The School where I teach is all “a-buzz” with musical and theater happenings upcoming. We have a new theater teacher this year who is dynamic and has not been hesitant to get the students invovled in exciting productions. We will be doing “Little Shop of Horrors” in the spring.
Here is what will be happening the next two weeks. My music students will be providing pre-show music on some of the nights:
The Academy Players and City Academy present “The Salt Lake City Holiday Follies.” In the style of the great Ziegfeld Follies, it’s an over the top, glitzed and glamorized look at the holidays in Salt Lake City. Join the Emcee on a hilarious and heart warming journey through large musical numbers, extravagantly ornate costumes–some of which are over 10 feet tall–and a variety of acts, scenes, and monologues, that will leave you singing from the roof tops!

There are several ways people can find out about the Green Party of Utah “saga” over the past year and a half. They offer different perspectives on the situation:

I was very, very sad to learn today of the retirement of Ken Sain’s blog. I will post Ken’s entire message here because won’t be up much longer:
I did talk to my new employers about my blog and my gay movie review site. I always knew that this day may come, and it is finally here.
The Gazette is owned by the Washington Post, although they are very independent from it. In fact, we consider the Post competition.
But one of the conditions of my employment is that I have to shut down this blog. The conflict of interest is more perception than reality. As the arts and entertainment editor I will have little influence on political coverage. But, the perception — as Michael Petrelis will no doubt point out — is still there.
So this blog comes to an end this weekend.
