Salt Lake City

This press conference is timed to coincide with the film screening of the new Wal-Mart Movie, Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price.

To the Tune of Silver Bells Chorus: “Buy and Sell….

….Buy and Sell! It’s Christmas time for conumers! Ring-a-ling….Cash Registers Ring! Must we spend Christmas this way?

No, we mustn’t and we don’t have to!

Jen’s Green Journal has a post on Gift Giving. She suggests that everything post things to their blog.

I have created a page of gift giving ideas. You can access it from my links to the left atHoliday Gift Giving Ideas.

I will add to it as the weeks go by. Please feel free to drop me suggestions!

Buy Nothing Day

Are you a shopaholic? Do you crave shopping on “Black Friday”? Well, here’s a solution:
Friday, November 25th, is Buy Nothing Day!

Yes, that’s right – Buy Nothing Day.

The Buy Nothing Day TV and Radio Spot is priceless. Share it with your friends.

Locally, the Salt Lake Radical Cheerleaders is organizing an afternoon of cheerful song in caroling fashion on the pitfalls of consumerism. There are lots of ideas and events descriptions at Adbusters.

Jen’s Green Journal has an article on alternative gifts to give this holiday season.

For several years now I have been giving things like Peace Calendars from the War Resisters League; CodePink herbal tea; handmade crocheted and sewn gifts; hand made and sewn items from my friends and their businesses and home grown food from my garden. It is satisfying to purchase things locally and to give gifts that do not come from sweatshops and that I did not purchase on typical shopping days. In fact, I ususally spend up to 6 months planning and making things for the holidays.

This holiday season, celebrate buying nothing. Give the gift of nothing but yourself.

Wal-Mart the Movie

Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price will be shown by the and Free Speech Zone this Saturday.

Wal-Mart has been engaging in a smear campaign against the film and its filmmaker, Robert Greenwald. Wal-Mart uses phrases and terms like:
A “CONTORTED VISION”
“FABRICATED”
“SENSATIONALIZED”
“A DISINGENUOUS CARICATURE”

and
“A HOLLYWOOD ELITIST”
“FAILED FANTASY FILMMAKER”

The producers remixed Wal-Mart’s smear video. It’s clever.

There are over 7,000 screenings being held. Let’s hope that this will be yet one more step in helping Davey to Win

My interest in alternative fuel was enlightened today by an article in the Deseret News on the

Utah Transit Authority considering employing soy power. A move to this could save $750.000 per year in fuel costs.

UTA has entered into negotiations with an Ogden based firm to begin purchasing bio-diesel fuel. The fuel would be a blend of 80% bio-diesel and 20% soy. THe plan is to use the fuel for all UTA busses. NOt only will this be a monetary savings all around, it will be better for our environment, as many of us know.

Orrin Hatch articles – Ethics Award Revoked

A telling phenomenon. Notice the oxymoron: Hatch purports to support humanitarian efforts like elder abuse prevention and the hunger problem in America, yet defends the oil industry’s profit making ventures and opposes taxing those profits.

Hatch pitches bill to address elder abuse
Hatch resolution aims at feeding the hungry
Hatch blows his stack over the proposed tax on big oil

An ethics group has revoked an award previously bestowed on Orrin:

    “Electoral Dysfunction…”

This week’s Salt Lake City Weekly
makes a brief mention of Julian Hatch’s challenge to the eternal incumbent Orrin Hatch for the U.S. Senate seat

    Funny….

It’s now been 5 days since the press release went out announcing Julian Hatch’s candidacy.

And still no word of it in the Utah newspapers.

Jen’s Journal mentions it; Ken Sain mentions it; and it’s mentioned on Utah Policy’s Blogwatch today.

Another release went out this morning announcing the press conference this Saturday. There will be more information on this blog regarding that soon.

I wonder if the local papers will pick this up or will keep trying to ignore Hatch v. Hatch?
