“All in the Family”

A few more articles are appearing in nationwide publications about Green Party of Utah’s U.S. Senate Candidate Julian Hatch.

There is a commentary on
San Antonio’s Express about Hatch v. Hatch – mingled into a longer column with commentary on other issues:

All in the family.

They say it is wise to know your enemy.

Nobody has to repeat that adage to Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, who will face a distant relative in his bid for re-election next year.

Julian Hatch, a member of the Green Party in Utah, is running on a platform that would make his more famous incumbent relative blanch, including abortion rights and opposition to the war in Iraq.

“We are building a populist third party to challenge the ruling two-party system that has become immersed in big money and entrenched in fascist ideology,” he told the Associated Press.

The campaign could prove a boon for family therapists.

Interesting Page on Orrin Hatch

Someone forwarded a link to RemoveRepublicans.com to me where there is a page on Orrin Hatch – commentary, voting records, etc.

I read through it and found some mistaken facts and have written to the contact of the site. One statement refers to Hatch’s “homeland” as Utah. Orrin Hatch is not a native of Utah and only moved here to establish residency so he could run for office 30 years ago.

Another statement refers to Green Party Candidate Julian Hatch‘s stance on choice and taxes and “leaning Democrat”, which I also challenged in my email and encourged the person(s) to read the Green Party Platform.

It’s an interesting page and even has one “to be fair” item on it, referring to Hatch’s support of stem cell research.

Famous Progressive Women

I am continuing my series of Famous Progressive Women. Read the two posts prior to this on
The Ultimate Activist:Harriet Tubman and
Petra Kelly, Founder of the Green Party.

In rememberance of the November 30 anniversary of her death, today I’m focuing on Mother Jones. Mother Jones was born in Ireland Mary Harris Jones on August 1, 1837. She died on November 30, 1930. She was raised in Canada, became a teacher in Michigan and then a dressmaker in Chicago. She married George Jones in 1861 and they had four children.

Ken Sain update

Ken Sain‘s blog has been down since Friday night. He told me that there are server upgrades occuring and it should be up soon. But now, Ken reports:

Not so sure about tomorrow morning right now. Long story short, I may
have lost all my database and two years worth of posts, comments and
all my settings. I’m trying to prevent that, and am hopeful I will be
able to do so. But I’m going on as if I’ll have to start from scratch.

I’m moving the site to a new server and they tell me it will take
between 5 to 7 days for the Internet gurus to point everyone to my new
server instead of the old when they type in kensain.com. So I’m at
their mercy.

Ken asked that folks spread the word.

“Strange Runnings in Utah “

Shamelessly Stolen from Irregular News.

It’s obvious by now that the 2006 congressional elections are going to be very big news. The Republicans, who have controlled Congress for almost 12 years, have made a huge mess of things and have taken America down a series of bizarre right hand turns. Lately, the House of Representatives and the Senate seem to be running a contest for which can pass the most extremist right wing nonsense into law.
But, America asks, what is the alternative? In Utah, at least, where right wing Senator Orrin Hatch must face re-election next year, there are two alternatives. The way it looks now, Utah’s 2006 senatorial campaign season is going to be one of strange runnings.

The continuing media saga

Oh, I get it now…..here’s the real news:
In today’s Deseret News the top two headlines:

  • Rivalry goes U.’s way
  • Rivalry runs red
and in the Salt Lake Tribune, the top article:
  • Update: Utah survives BYU comeback, wins 41-34 in OT

    ….all about college football!
(as I bang the heel of my hand to my forehead….)

Silly me thinking there was more important news. As Napolean Dynamite would say “Gosh…..idiot!”

  • Meanwhile….

While a room full of citizens appeared for the Julian Hatch for U.S. Senate kick-off campaign press conference, the media was visibly absent.

“Let me ask…..is there any media present?” asked Hatch of the audience. Hatch went on to point out the problems with our media. “This is democracy? We have received international attention while the Deseret News and the Salt Lake Tribune have ignored us.”

Hatch described the points of his campaign and the problems with incumbent Orrin Hatch. He inspired at least one audience member to join the Green Party of Utah.

“I have been a member of the Progressive Democrats here in Utah but I knew something was wrong because I have been participating with organizations to help plan civil disobedience actions. I have found myself not attending [Democrat] meetings or following through with my repsonsibilities. Julian said something tonight that clicked for me: We have to build a viable third party here that will grow and make the Democrats be Democrats. That’s when I knew I have to join the Green Party.”

So while the media may not have attended, the press conference continued and was successful by virtue of the fact that at least one person was pursuaded to take action for change.

CITGO to start distribution of discounted heating oil to USA’s poor

Rafael Ramirez, Venezuela’s Minister of Energy and Petroleum has announced that CITGO, the Venezuelan owned and U.S. based fuel refiner/distributer will begin distributing discounted heating oil to poor U.S. communities next week.

Ramirez stated that this effort is to demonstrate Venezuela’s continuing commitment to poor and disadvantaged communities in the U.S. President Hugo Chavez had made the announcement in August during Jesse Jackson’s visit.
