City Academy’s Grand Opening

Last night the school where Tom and I work, City Academy, had its grand opening to celebrate our new downtown location.  FOX 13 news was there and had a piece on us at 9pm last night (it’s mentioned on their website).
Here is the article in today’s Deseret News just as the ribbon was cut to the building (I’m standing in the front with my camera):

For people who make excuses about not using the train….

It seems that a common response I get about using the train is how much time it takes and that peoples’ family time is more important than spending time on the train, thus the excuse for using their cars to commute.

Today’s Deseret News has a feature on how much time people spend in their cars to commute to and from work.

The study by The Road Information Program (TRIP – a nonprofit organization that studies roads and congestion in several states.) shows that Utah motorists are wasting up to 76 hours and 56 gallons of fuel annually, just sitting in traffic. And depending what roads you use, the numbers go even higher. Traffic congestion costs Utah drivers as much as $1,275 a year in wasted time and fuel.
Over the past few months, TRIP looked at data from state and federal agencies, as well as research and planning groups, to complete the study that lists the 25 most-congested roads in Utah. For each of those roads, the study estimated how much time and money people waste while stuck in traffic.
“Commuters are losing a lot of time and wasting money because of growing traffic congestion,” said Frank Moretti, spokesman for TRIP, a transportation-research group based in Washington, D.C.
Utah County had 14 of the 25 most congested roads, while Salt Lake County had eight of them, according to the study.
The most expensive route to drive is I-15 in Utah County, from Orem’s University Parkway to 1600 North, the study showed. Motorists using that route spend $1,275 each year on traffic delays. Drivers there lose about 76 hours of time annually in traffic and waste about 56 gallons of fuel.

Marshall is more than halfway through the state of Utah! He is doing well and is grateful for all the support he has received so far.

Unfortunately, since Marshall started planning this walk, the U.S. casualty ratehas risen to over 2,700 in Iraq.  Actually, today they hit 2,800. So,he will add one day of walking in Utah, and one day of walking and meeting withpeople in Washington D.C.  Please check the JoinIn section of the websitefor the RECENT changes to his itinerary. He will walk through St. George andfinish at the Arizona border on November 1st. We really want a big crowdin St. George on the last day.  If you can make it, please come! Ifyou can’t be there, you can still be represented with our balloons forpeace campaign.

:BALLOONS FOR PEACE:

You can be there in spirit.  We want to show Utah how many peoplesupport peace in Iraq. If you send us your name and the city, state, or countrythat you’re from, we will make sure there is a balloon on the last dayof Marshall’s walk to represent you. Those who walk through St. Georgeon November 1st will carry the white balloons.  This will help illustratethe support for a responsible withdrawal from Iraq. The balloons will not bereleased into the air for environmental reasons.  E-mail your name and the city, state, and country that you’re from to balloons@soldierspeace.com. Those of you who have already expressed your support or your desire to walk withMarshall should still e-mail us sowe can make sure there is a balloon to represent you.  Right now, thereare less than 50 balloons reserved.  We wouldlike the number to exceed a minimum of 50

:: HOW TO HELP:

We are still trying to raise enough money to cover the costs of this walk andthe balloons for peace effort.  If you are able, please visit the DONATEsection of the website.

Another way to help is to spread the word.  E-mail your friends and familyabout the walk and the balloonsfor peace campaign.  Contact your localand national media and let them know what is happening in Utah.  We wanteveryone to know about A Soldier’s Peace and about the support Marshallhas encountered for a responsible troop withdrawal throughout his walk.

Finally, for those of you who plan to be in St. George on November 1st, we coulduse your help.  Before the walk begins, we will need people to help withballoons and with the Eyes WideOpen Exhibit.  If you can help, please e-mailus at info@soldierspeace.com

We really appreciate the support we have received so far and we hope to see youin St. George.

I Am Left out of Trib Article on the SLCo District 5 Race

I saw with excitement that the article about the SLCo District 5 race, in which I am a candidate, was published in today’s paper. As I read the article I became sorely disppointed that I was mentioned once as a candidate running. The entire article focuse on the GOP having a “firm hold” in this race and the republican candidate is expected to win. (This explains why I haven’t seen any signs of the republican candidate.)
The article very generously gave time to both the republican and democrat candidate, with quotes from them both and answers to questions they were asked and I was not.

Needless to say, I’m not happy. I feel I have been discriminated against, even though I paid the same filing fee and have completed all the required paperwork reqire to run for this office.

I would appreciate anyone who feels inclined to write a letter of disppointment to the editor of the Tribune regarding this.

Here is my response to the article’s author:

Orrin’s billboards

I’ve been seeing gigantic billboards for Orrin Hatch’s U.S. Senate Campaign. They are pretty sickening. They have adjectives supposedly describing him, along with the phonetic spellings and dictionary definitions. Well, I’ve come up with some of my own for Orrin that I think should replace the billboard spectacles:

  • Clout
    Should be: Lout

  • Last week I posted a piece on the fact that the U.S. population was expected to hit the 300 million mark any day. Well it has. And Utah has contributed to that growth.

The United States hit the population milestone at about 5:46 this morning, according to U.S. Census Bureau estimates. The nation’s population clock, online at http://www.census.gov, was at 299,995,920 at 5 p.m. Monday.
“It’s something worth celebrating,” said Dan Griswold, director of the Center for Trade Policy Studies at the Cato Institute. “We’re a unique nation. We have a large population and a high standard of living. That magnifies our influence.”

As if our “influence” needed any more magnifying.

Utah Third Party Candidates….and the Desert Greens Green Party of Utah….in the News

Sunday’s Deseret News had two articles on third parties:
A look at some of the third-party candidates
    and
Utah’s third parties hope to be first choice: More than a quarter of candidates are not Republicans or Democrats

The first article was pretty short, so I’ll repost it here. Julina Hatch, candidate for U.S. Senate on the Desert Greens ticket, is featured in both articles:

Here is a glimpse into the background of a few the third-party candidates interviewed by the Deseret Morning News:

I will not be blogging for the next several days. Taking a much needed break away from civilization.
