Human Rights Education

Last night I attended an open house for the Human Rights Education Center of Utah. It was fun to meet new people and to see the HREC’s new office.  My colleague, Carla Kelley, is the Executive Director. My fellow blogger, Cliff Lyon of oneutah is on the Board of Directors for the HREC.  Carla teaches human rights and peace study classes at our school, City Academy

“We must model and teach respect for all humanity as our hope for tomorrow relies upon it.”
~ Carla Kelley
From the HREC website:

The Human Rights Education Center of Utah (HREC) was established in 1999 to teach tolerance and promote respect for differences and an appreciation for diversity.
This year we will reach over 2500 children and young adults providing educational training programs teaching anti-bias, diversity and peacemaking education

“By kindergarten, some children believe they have the right to control the social experience of other children.” Vivian Gussin Paley

The HREC provides much needed valuable education for our community – especially in schools.  This organization is working on anti-bullying legislation for the next Utah Legislative Session.  Both Houses passed an anti-bullying resolution in the last session, a great first step and one that was long overdue.

The HREC offers all sorts of classes to individuals and groups.  It has an extensive library that anyone can utilize.

Caravan to Cuba

The Pastors for Peace Caravan to Cuba will be in Salt Lake this Saturday. The Desert Greens Green Party Candidates have endorsed the event. I have a quote in the press release that was issued today. The Green Party of the United States published our press release on its home page under “local news”.

Yesterday I was interviewed by the Deseret News as participant with People for Peace and Justice of Utah. There will be an article in Saturday’s religion section of the D-News about Saturday’s event. HOpefully the press will come to the press conference at 5pm on Saturday to interview the caravanistas.

I am a strong advocate of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. I do not believe that our government, or any government for that matter, has the right to forbid its citizens from contributing aid to those in need in other countries, let alone forbid its citizens from free travel across borders.

Pastors for Peace and hundreds of volunteers from the US and 7 other countries are slated to cross the US border into Mexico on July 2nd challenging US restrictions on travel and aid to Cuba. This is the 17th annual Caravan. The Caravan will be stopping in Salt Lake City on Saturday, July 24th. People for Peace and Justice of Utah has organized a free public event at Free Speech Zone (2144 South Highland Drive) beginning at 5pm for the Press and 7pm for the public.

Religious leaders renew call for Guantanamo shutdown

Dan Webster, Communications Director for the National Council of Churches, former Episcopal Public Relations Director here in Salt Lake, and good activist friend of mine, sent this today:

Suicides at Guantanamo Bay prison lead to renewed calls to close the facility

New York, June 11, 2006 — The suicides of three prisoners at the Guantanamo Bay detention center in Cuba have prompted a renewed call by the National Council of Churches USA that the facility be closed.

The suicides are “another milestone in a sordid history of human rights denial and crimes against humanity,” said the Rev. Dr. Bob Edgar, NCC General Secretary.

“Americans who love their country and its historic ideals are mortified by this continuing blot on our honor, on our steadfast defense of freedom, and on our commitment to democracy and the rule of law,” Edgar said.

World Fair Trade Day

I heard today that it was Fair Trade Day by some people that attended a Fair Trade event in Salt Lake. I thought that WFTD was the second Saturday in May, so I looked that up and discovered that World Fair Trade Day is actually May 13, so I didn’t miss it!

At any rate, it’s good to buy Fair Trade every day and the above links are to sources that provide a lot of information about that.

Utah’s Uninsured Population Rising

Residents in Utah without health insurance increased by 40,000 in one year.

The ranks of Utah’s uninsured grew by 1 percent between 2004 and 2005, according to a recently released report from the Utah Department of Health.

There are about 300,000 Utahns without health insurance and 46 million Americans. The latter figure includes about 8 million children. According to the Deseret News article quoted above, Gov. Jon Huntsman has created a working group to study this issue and address the root cause of the alarming fact that so many of us are without health insurance.

I have been without health insurance for most of the last decade, so I can speak from personal experience to this issue.

The “root” cause is the profit-making corporate nature of health insurance companies and health care providers, including hospitals and nursing homes.

Health care is a basic human right. It is addressed and provided for in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, a document which the U.S. became a signatory in 1948. To wit:

Article 25.

(1) Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care and necessary social services, and the right to security in the event of unemployment, sickness, disability, widowhood, old age or other lack of livelihood in circumstances beyond his control.

There is no humane reason why so many Americans, and worldwide citizens for that matter, should suffer as a result of not being able to afford health care. It’s a basic human right.

“CAPITAL TRAVELS FREELY – WHY NOT PEOPLE!”

This morning I offered my comments in response to Rep. Chris Cannon’s press release on the immigration issue. One comment I made was that if capital can freely travel, people out to be able to also.
This afternoon I received the article below in my email box and thought it was timely, so I’ve reprinted it here.
—————————————
Women of Color in the Global Women’s Strike and the Global Women’s Strike participated in actions in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Philadelphia and circulated this statement.
FOR MAY 1, 2006, “A DAY WITHOUT AN IMMIGRANT.”

WOMEN SAY “CAPITAL TRAVELS FREELY – WHY NOT PEOPLE!”

A massive movement of grassroots women and men, workers and students, on the streets in the US is demanding that their work be counted and that this be reflected in what they are entitled to: immediate amnesty for all immigrants, no to criminalization, an end to militarization and fences along the US/Mexico border, no increased enforcement, no separation of families, an end to racism, and no to HR 4437 (the Sensenbrenner/King bill). On March 25th 2006, more than one million women, men and children filled the streets of downtown Los Angeles, 500,000 marched in Bush’s home state of Texas, and millions more participated in protests across both urban and rural US, North and South.

This massive and growing movement has shocked elected officials, who are now scrambling to find a way to achieve their goals. The House of Representatives had passed HR4437, and this initially sparked the protests. Since then the Senate has put forward legislation that, while appearing to meet the movement’s demands, is just as punitive, sexist and racist.
