Buttars won’t give up

Chris Buttars is trying to do everything he can to ban gay clubs from schools.

Buttars, the Utah legislator who has “come out” against the Gay-Straight Alliance Clubs (GSA) and also against the teaching of evolution as the sole concept in public school science classes, is pushing a bill that contains this language: [would prohibit] “a Nazi club, abortion club or sodomy club”.

More Larry Miller News

Today’s Deseret News has published an entitled ‘Transamerica’ not set for Megaplex, about a rumor that Miller’s Megaplex had an ad in a local GLBT newspaper for a “controversial” movie that was then pulled. Here is the article:

A movie about a pre-operative, male-to-female transsexual has not been pulled from Larry Miller’s Megaplex 17 theater, contrary to a report on a Web site.
“This film was not pulled from the theater because it was never scheduled to be shown — it’s not scheduled to be in that theater,” said Sarah Rothman, spokeswoman for The Weinstein Company in New York.
The movie, “Transamerica,” is planned for eventual release in the Salt Lake market, Rothman said, but there is no date set for the movie’s arrival here. “I don’t have a specific theater in mind yet,” she added.
However, Salt Lake Metro, which bills itself as Utah’s gay and lesbian biweekly newspaper, said on its Web site, http://www.slmetro.com, that the movie had been advertised on an Internet site for Miller’s theater and then the ad was reportedly removed over the weekend. The newspaper cited another Web site as its source for news of the cancellation.
Calls to a theater representative and a spokesman for Miller were not returned.
Miller’s Jordan Commons theater has received international attention for pulling “Brokeback Mountain,” a movie about two gay cowboys.

Larry Miller Boycott

Earlier this week I published the call for a Larry H. Miller Boycott due to his action of removing the film “Brokeback Mountain” from his Megaplex Theater Complex. Someone responded to that post stating that they will now choose to purposefully patronize Miller’s businesses beause he did a “great thing for the decreasing morals in the United States.” (I responded to that – you can click the link to read my response.)

So I looked at the Megaplex Theater website. Here are the films being shown that are rated “R”. All of the “R” rated movies have this disclaimer:
For the comfort and convenience of our Guests, no children under the age of 5 will be admitted to movies with R ratings after 6:00 PM. (Does this mean that children under the age of 5 are admitted to “R” movies before 6pm????):

CasanovaIn Venice, a fifth-generation Casanova meets his match when he falls for the sister of the boy he is hired to tutor on the ways of seducing women. A re-telling of the Casanova story set in the 18th century. Genres: Comedy, Drama and Romance Running Time: 1 hr. 48 min. Release Date: December 25, 2005 MPAA Rating: R for some sexual content.

Speaking of phobias: Brokeback Mountain and Larry Miller.; Bob Redford weighs in

Supporters of Larry Miller are calling for support of the local business owner while human rights activists call for a boycott Larry Miller for pulling the film Brokeback Mountain from his Megaplex Theater complex.

There is a section in this article that has links to all the media coverage in the Salt Lake Tribune about the issue. One of the links was to an opinion piece entitled “Why ‘Brokeback Mountain’ is so frightening”. The title frightened me, so I didn’t read it for fear of becoming ill over that opinion. (Is that a “phobia”? See my post on phobias and superstitions above!).

Meanwhile, Robert Redford has weighed in on the issue.

Outraged but not surprised: Utah Theater pulls Brokeback Mountain film

Why am I not surprised? It’s another double standard. Graphic violence is o.k., love stories are not. Hmmmm…..

A local wealthy automobile dealership owner, property owner, owner of the Utah’s professional basketball team, Utah Jazz, amd noted LDS church member has pulled the film Brokeback Mountain from his Megaplex 17 Cinema Complex at Jordan Commons in Sandy, Utah. Brokeback Mountain is about two gay cowboys who rekindle their love after years of being apart and being married to women.

Larry Miller has not returned phone calls in response to the request that the Newspaper Agency Corp., which handles advertising, production and printing for both the Deseret News and the Salt Lake Tribune, to remove show times for the film from its ads, according to the Deseret News article.

More re”butt”al to Buttars on Gay Clubs

An alumnus of Bountiful High School in Utah has come forward with his frustration that state Senator Chris Buttars is pursuing an initiative to remove gay clubs from public schools. He furthers the position that the clubs are assets to schools and should not be removed.

Utah Gov on Gay Clubs in Schools

Utah Governor Jon Huntsman has issued the statement that gay clubs should be a local issue, not a state issue. This comes on the heels of yesterday’s announcement that state Senator Chris Buttars is purusuing the banning of such clubs in public schools.

“He’s so gay”

That’s what my students would say about Utah State Senator Chris Buttars, who wants to prohibit gay clubs in Utah schools.

Buttars has also been aggressive about pushing for the public school curriculum in Utah to teach the religious based theory of “intelligent design” as an alternative to the theory of evolution. Buttars’ recent initiative to get the gay clubs out of schools is being supported by the Utah Eagle Forum, a right-wing fundamentalist Christian Lobbyist organization.
