Light Rail: Warming up to the concept

It’s no secret that I strongly advocate mass transportation, including light rail. I am happy to read into today’s Deseret News that most of those polled in a recent survey about light rail would gladly pay more taxes to expand the current system to include the major portion of the Wasatch Front.

Finally, people are increasingly catching on. No doubt that the rising fuel costs have some bearing on that awareness.

Transportation alternatives, including expanding commuter rail routes, can be viewed on the Utah Department of Transportation‘s website. A spokesperson quoted in the article encourages folks to look at the options and voice their opinion.

Elected officials are also encouraged to listen to their constituents on the issue. Now that’s a concept!

My interest in alternative fuel was enlightened today by an article in the Deseret News on the

Utah Transit Authority considering employing soy power. A move to this could save $750.000 per year in fuel costs.

UTA has entered into negotiations with an Ogden based firm to begin purchasing bio-diesel fuel. The fuel would be a blend of 80% bio-diesel and 20% soy. THe plan is to use the fuel for all UTA busses. NOt only will this be a monetary savings all around, it will be better for our environment, as many of us know.

I’m a little behind this week in my regular blogging for a variety of reasons. Nonetheless, I wanted to announce this week’s carnival of the green, hosted by

Slag Site Cleanup in Our Neighborhood

Tom and I have been observing with curiosity and interest an excavation project near our home. We live just west of the Midvale, Utah line in West Jordan. Just east of that line (which is actually the Jordan River), is the land formerly owned by Sharon Steele, a mining company that dumped its tailings on this land. The Midvale Slag Superfund Site, a former smelting facility which covers 446 acres in Midvale, is right next to the Sharon Steele site. The site contains slag and hazardous smelting wastes, posing a threat to human health and the environment. It was added to the Superfund National Priorities List in 1991.
