Desert Greens Green Party of Utah Candidates Denounce Divine Strake Test

Yesterday the five candidates from the Desert Greens issues a press release denouncing the Divine Strake Test. It was published on the Green Party of the United States website.

When I did a google news search for Divine Strake our press release came up first this morning.

I had a lengthy discussion with a writer on Honolulu yesterday who called me when she found out about the test. She is outraged and has all sorts of connections to people like Dr. Helen Caldecott, renowned anti-nuclear activist physician and some others in the medical, activist, and noted activist actors arena. I urged her to use her contacts to get the word out to realize her vision of getting the media actively involved in this and to organize actions all around the country.

I have received similar phone calls from others in places all over the country. This has been, so far, an inspiring experience for me.

SLC Mayor wants public hearing on blast

Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson has issued a call to Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, and Rep. Jim Matheson, D-Utah, for hearings in northern Utah on the Divine Strake explosion.

Anderson is proposing that the Defense Department hold public meetings in Salt Lake City and along the Wasatch Front. The meetings would inform the public about the issues and collect comments, according to a press release from Anderson’s office.

Anderson has even offered the services of his staff to help arrange the public hearings.

Now that Anderson had made a request for meetings in northern Utah, she[Alyson Heyrend, Matheson’s spokeswoman] said, she believes the state’s congressional delegation will “think about the request.”

Think about the request? What is there to think about? Rocky Anderson has made a request on behalf of residents of the Wasatch Front, where about 80 percent of Utahns live.

I urge everyone reading this to not only call Matheson’s and Hatch’s offices to demand a public hearing, but to also spread the word for others to do this.

Blogswarm Thank You – STOP THE DIVINE STRAKE

I’d like to thank all bloggers who participated in yesterday’s Stop the Divine Strake Blogswarm! It provided good outreach and a chance for bloggers to unite on a single topic that potentially effect the world. It also made my first attempt at organizing a blogswarm a success! Thanks to everyone also who did outreach for this blogging event.

Thank you to Utah Policy for covering the blogswarm in today’s newsletter edition.

I would like to take this opporunity to put in a plug for donations to help support the event at the Nevada Test Site. The planning team is providing basic infrastructure for folks to be able to attend – water, sanitation, meeting tents and first aid. Financial help is greatly appreciated to help offset the costs of transporting these items to and from the site and maintaining them while there.

Please donate online at:
Shundahai Network, the organization facilitating the logistics and accepting the donations.

I was notified yesterday by an email acquaintance that her boyfriend just created the Stop the Divine Strake Website.

So far it has lots of information on it and promises to be comprehensive.

STOP THE DIVINE STRAKE – Test site action information

Planning to attend the Nevada Action?
Here is some important information regarding the Nevada Test Site Action, which is posted at Shundahai Network.

What to bring:
The Nevada Desert is known for extremes of temperature. Please bring clothing to allow you to be comfortable during the noonday heat, as well as cool nights. Hats, sunscreen and an abundant supply of water are also strongly recommended. We do not know if any food will be provided. The camp is about 100 miles from amenities, so plan accordingly, and bring your own food.

What we’ll do:
On Saturday: We will offer classes and workshops in cultural sensitivity, non-violent direct action, the history of the test site, and up-to-date information on the test itself.

On Sunday: There will be a sunrise ceremony, followed by a break. There will be an interfaith service from 11-2, followed by a rally, and possible direct action crossing the line into the test site. A detailed agenda is forthcoming.

Affinity camps are welcome to schedule their own activities within their camps. There will be a central gathering tent, in which activities will be scheduled. For more information on scheduling activities in the tent, please contact Deanna Taylor at deesings@xmission.org.

Keep in mind:

There are absolutely no drugs or alcohol permitted on the site. The site belongs to the Western Shoshone and we are their guests. Please be a culturally sensitive and aware guest and learn Western Shoshone cermonies and protocols. There will be signs posted alerting you to sacred and sensitive sites. Please respect them. Upon arrival, you will be issued a permit by the Western Shoshone for a suggested $5.00 donation.

How to get there:
Here is a map and directions, pasted below:

Directions to the NTS Peace Camp

Map to Peace Camp from surrounding areasThe Peace Camp is across from the entrance to the Nevada Test Site, one hour north of Las Vegas, on Highway 95. The camp can be accessed directly from the southbound “Mercury” exit of 95. If you are heading north from Las Vegas, continue past the Mercury exit until the highway is no longer divided (about one mile), pull off on to the shoulder, and make a U turn. Now you should be driving south on Hwy 95. Take the Mercury Exit, look for signs to the camp. The nearest place to get gas, telephone access, food or water is Indian Springs, about 20 miles south of the camp, back towards Las Vegas.

STOP THE DIVINE STRAKE – taking action in solidarity

As posted before, an International Day of Action has been planned for May 28th at the Nevada Test Site. I am on the organizing team for that event. It promises to be a well-attended event with people travelling from all over to attend.

Actions are being planned all over in solidarity with the Nevada Test Site Action:

  • Activists in St. George held a rally last Saturday, May 13th. About 100 people attended.
  • The Maine and Minnesota Greens are planning actions the 28th (I will post details about those as I get them).
  • In Salt Lake, there will be a vigil on the 28th on the sidewalk in front of the Federal Building from 5-7pm, organized by Green Jenni.
  • MacGregor Eddy of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom reports that WILPF has joined the coalition to STOP Divine (NOT!) invites people (especially in southern CA) to join them at Vandenberg Space Command this Saturday May 20. Andy Lichterman of the Western States Legal Foundation will give and update on the Ammonium Nitrate Fuel Oil (ANFO) explosion call Divine Strake. They will also have Que Keju of the Marshall Islands. The missiles from Vandenberg land at Kwajalein atoll in the Marshall Islands in the South Pacific. Medea Benjamin of CodePink will be with us as well as Bill Mitchell of Gold Star Families for Peace. for more information email me at mindful@redshift.com or call my cell phone 831 206 5043.
