Impeachment Ad in NY Times today

From http://www.VotetoImpeach.org:

Today’s New York Times carries the full page ad calling for the impeachment of George W. Bush (Jan. 12, 2007). Congratulations to all members of ImpeachBush/VoteToImpeach.org who helped place this New York Times ad. This is the third full-page impeachment ad to run in the New York Times. With everyone’s support, we have also placed ads in the San Francisco Chronicle, Boston Globe, USA Today, and other newspapers around the country.

The timing for the ad is excellent. Coming 36 hours after Bush brazenly announced an expansion of his criminal war and occupation in Iraq, the country is seething with anger. Because Bush remains in office, thus far escaping impeachment, thousands more Iraqis and U.S. soldiers will be killed and wounded in a war that should never have happened.

We want to seize the momentum and place the ad in various other newspapers. We will also be having a major impeachment contingent on March 17, the 4th anniversary of the war in Iraq, at the March on the Pentagon in Washington DC. We can place more ads and organize the nationwide grassroots campaign, including this contingent, with everyone’s continued support and commitment to ImpeachBush.org. If you can help, click here

The danger that Bush poses is extreme. His speech of Wednesday night, directly in opposition to the wishes of the American people, not only announced his plan to deepen the war in Iraq, but made clear his direct threat to attack Syria and Iran. Impeachment is imperative. Congress must act before more and more are killed and before Bush’s war spreads into other countries. We cannot wait two more years.

Please take action today:

1. Forward this email to all of your lists and your friends and families. You can do so by clicking here.
2. Be sure to sign the referendum for impeachment and get everyone you know to sign it too. We will be announcing the new calendar and plan of action shortly to everyone who has signed up.
3. Donate now, your help is urgently needed for the impeachment effort. Click here.

The coming months are critical for the impeachment movement. Not only do 70% of the people oppose Bush’s expansion of the Iraq war, the so-called “surge,” the majority believe that Bush should be impeached if he lied about the reasons for the Iraq war, or if he engaged in illegal wiretapping. He did both. This is a people’s movement and everyone’s help is needed. As ImpeachBush.org has stated, “The Constitution cannot defend itself. The people must act.”

If every member and supporter of the impeachment movement made a donation, this ad could be placed in newspapers across the country. If you have contributed before, consider making another donation now. If you have never donated this is the time to take action. Please donate today by clicking here.

Your work and support has taken the Impeachment movement to a significant moment in U.S. politics. People throughout the United States are now openly and frequently discussing the possibility of impeachment and urging their Congressional representatives to take the right step. The letters to the editor and full page ads that you have worked to place have forced the mass media to acknowledge that impeachment is a real issue for this President. Check your email in the coming days for announcements of the next steps and actions, and be sure to get as many as you can to sign the referendum and get involved.

Interesting Way to Protest

Some folks in Ogden held a protest with an interesting twist Tuesday. Photos of a variety of Bushites were affixed to pumpkins – and then smashed to smitherines.  The hammers used to smash the pumpkins had names:  Truth, Justice and Liberty  The protest was silent,except for the noise of pumpkins being smashed.

People attend a protest in front of Ogden City Hall. No speeches were made. Instead, protesters affixed photos of detested individuals to pumpkins and smashed the gourds to smithereens.

More on Rumsfeld

Over on One Utah there’s a lively discussion about the Rumsfeld resignation. Here is what one commenter says about the story:

I see no reason for the resignation of Rumsfeld to be greeted with excitement. Rumsfeld is not the one who made the decision for us to invade Iraq under false pretenses. That came from his boss. He may have been eagerly complicit, but the fact remains that he was nothing more than an accessory to the crime. The buck stops at the president’s desk. Until “The Decider” is removed, there will be no meaningful change in policy. Any such resignations are merely smoke and mirrors.

Restoring Education, Healing Children, Creating Citizens:

A Conversation with John Taylor Gatto
Backbone Cabinet Nominee, Education
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
RSVP to join us on Monday, November 6, 5:30 (PACIFIC)
Education Secretary nominee John Taylor Gatto is a passionate advocate for education reform. A schoolteacher for thirty years, and a multi-year recipient of New York State and New York City Teacher of the Year Awards, His celebrated books include Dumbing Us Down: The Hidden Curriculum of Compulsory Schooling, The Exhausted School, A Different Kind of Teacher, and The Underground History of American Education.
Nationwide there has been much discussion about our failing public education system – low standardized test scores, teacher shortages, crowded classrooms, school budget crises, crumbling school buildings, dangerous playgrounds, illiterate untrained young adults, and more. Chronically failing public school systems throughout the United States have compelled politicians to address this issue in a counterproductive and symbolic manner (i.e. Bush’s No Child Left Behind Act). Many parents have sought alternative education settings for their children such as a school voucher system, charter schools, homeschooling, and costly, homogeneous, independent schools.
John Taylor Gatto has taken the debate further, describing our public school structure as a “Catastrophe.” Gatto asserts that public schooling in this country was “deliberately designed to produce mediocre intellects, to hamstring the inner life, to deny students appreciable leadership skills, and to ensure docile and incomplete citizens in order to render the populace ‘manageable.’ ” (quote from Against Schools article by Gatto, Harper’s Magazine, 2003 – read the article)
If that is true, are public schools succeeding in their original purpose? If so, what does Gatto propose Americans do for our children instead? What do our young people really need to know to create abundant lives for themselves, for survival and community building in the 21st century?
For Monday’s Conversation, John Taylor Gatto will engage with us as we explore possible solutions to these troubling questions about American schooling. Besides reading the Harper’s article linked to above, it might be interesting preparation to listen to our past call with Jonathan Kozol.
Another Bush Chain Gang Sighting
The Bush Chain Gang visited the weekly peace vigil last night at 100 South State Street:
H.R.5122–Title: To authorize appropriations for fiscal year 2007 for military activities of the Department of Defense, for military construction, and for defense activities of the Department of Energy, to prescribe military personnel strengths for such fiscal year, and for other purposes.
Bush Moves Toward Martial Law
Frank Morales
The historic and ominous re-writing of the Insurrection Act, accomplished in the dead of night, which gives Bush the legal authority to declare martial law, is now an accomplished fact.
October 26, 2006
In a stealth maneuver, President Bush has signed into law a provision which, according to Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vermont), will actually encourage the President to declare federal martial law (1). It does so by revising the Insurrection Act, a set of laws that limits the President’s ability to deploy troops within the United States. The Insurrection Act (10 U.S.C.331 -335) has historically, along with the Posse Comitatus Act (18 U.S.C.1385), helped to enforce strict prohibitions on military involvement in domestic law enforcement. With one cloaked swipe of his pen, Bush is seeking to undo those prohibitions.
Public Law 109-364, or the “John Warner Defense Authorization Act of 2007” (H.R.5122) (2), which was signed by the commander in chief on October 17th, 2006, in a private Oval Office ceremony, allows the President to declare a “public emergency” and station troops anywhere in America and take control of state-based National Guard units without the consent of the governor or local authorities, in order to “suppress public disorder.”
President Bush seized this unprecedented power on the very same day that he signed the equally odious Military Commissions Act of 2006. In a sense, the two laws complement one another. One allows for torture and detention abroad, while the other seeks to enforce acquiescence at home, preparing to order the military onto the streets of America. Remember, the term for putting an area under military law enforcement control is precise; the term is “martial law.”
Chain Gang Debut
Last night the Bush Chain Gang made its official debut in Sugarhouse. People seemed receptive and enjoyed (after double-takes) the giant figures. The Gang will be spending Halloween in Sugarhouse and each Thursday at the weekly peace vigil, 100 South State Street, Salt Lake City. The Gang will be making appearances at other venues throughout the month of November.
