Grandmothers Letter Writing Campaign

Grandmothers Agains the War has launched a letter writing campaign, in an effort to educate young people on war issues. Sample letters are provided.

We urge all like-minded people – you – (regardless of gender) to write a letter that explores how experiences in your own life have brought you to oppose the current war and occupation. You can address actual children and young people, or imaginary ones, and you are encouraged
to send copies of your letters to friends, relatives, newspapers — to be disseminated widely, above all to The Grandmothers’ Letters Project.

Voters for Peace has issued a call for people to Sign the Iraq Pledge:

“I will not vote for or support any candidate for Congress or President who does not make a speedy end to the war in Iraq, and preventing any future war of aggression, a public position in his or her campaign.”

VotersForPeace is trying to get 2 million voters to sign its Peace Pledge in time for the 2006 elections. The Pledge is a statement of support for peace candidates: “who publicly oppose wars of aggression.”

Peace Action

My state party has approved me to become a member of the Green Party of the United States Peace Action Committee. I was invited to be a member last week.

The Peace Action Committee (GPAX) of the Green Party of the United States (GPUS) exists to facilitate the planning and achievement of peace and justice action proposals adopted by the Green Party, and to support and promote the Party’s Anti-War candidates and agenda.

I am excited to become part of this nationally organized committee. I’ll provide relevant updates here on activities with this group.

Why Good People Kill….

….Iraq murders reveal the warping power of conformity and dehumanization.
by Rosa Brooks, who is a professor at the University of Virginia School of Law, is an interesting look into the issue of Americans being “good people”.

She begins
Are Americans good people?
After Vietnam — after My Lai, after the free-fire zones — many Americans were no longer sure.
After Haditha, the same question is again beginning to haunt us. We’re supposed to be a virtuous nation; our troops are supposed to be the good guys. If it turns out that Marines murdered 24 civilians, including children and infants, how could that have happened?

She addresses the “bad apple theory” and provides a look at these “key factors” leading to good people doing terrible things, substantiated by examples in far past and recent history:

  • authority
  • conformity
  • dehumanization of the victims

Sarandon Joins Vigil Against Iraq War

Susan Sarandon and Cindy Sheehan joined in a vigil at the White House over this Mother’s Day weekend, with letters to deliver to Laura Bush, uring her to pursuade her husband to personally notify mothers whose children have died while serving in Iraq.

The protest was organized by CodePink Women for Peace.

Who REally Spoiled the 2000 Election?

This is a longer response to “El Critical One” in my post on Why Vote Green

Greens did not cost Al Gore the 2000 election, a whole lot of other folks did.

    Big Brother is Watching

Sgt. Gehlen from the U.S. Central Command public Affairs has posted a reply to the post I made this morning about the 3rd anniversary of George W. Bush declaring the Iraq conflict as “Mission Accomplished”. He has graciously pointed me and my readers to CENTCOM for the most accurate and up to date figures on the war on terrorism.

Among the links on the CENTCOM site are:

Today marks the 3rd anniversary of George W. Bush landing in a jet on the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln off the California coast where, in a speech to the nation, he declared major combat in Iraq over. The banner his staff posted on the ship read “Mission Accomplished.”:

The irony is that since then approximately 2400 Americans and more than 30,000 Iraqis have lost their lives, in addition to the tens of thousand of others injured in the conflict.
