Radical Cheerleaders featured on local blog

Ethan of SLC Spin has a post about Pom Poms Not Bomb Bombs (of which I am a member), by request, that has generated some comments. A lot of the comments made it apparent to me that folks don’t know about radical cheerleading as a movement, so I made these comments to his post:

I am wondering if any of your readers have gone to our website, Pom Poms Not Bomb Bombs?
We are a group of very diverse individuals who decided to get our peace and justice messages out through cheerleading. We have been
featured in Salt Lake’s CATALYST, have an appearance in the movie “This Divided State”, and recently had our photo published in the Chicago Tribune.

Radical Cheerleading is an international movement, is fun and entertaining!

We appear in the St. Patrick’s Day and Pride Day Parades (our favorite parade chant is “To the Left! To the Left! Not to the righ, To the Left!”) and at all the rallies in town.

Here is a post about radical cheerleading that might possibly interest some of your readers.

Rocky: On Dissidence

The Salt Lake Tribune has a special features today on Salt Lake City MayorRocky Anderson and his dissident voice on many issues.

I’ve always felt a very deep responsibility to stand up against what I believe is wrongdoing and do what I can to improve our community and our world. . . . If you just go along to get along, you’re simply supporting the status quo, and there are too many things about the status quo that we all need to be not only upset about but working to change.

Rocky talks about the GOP, Utah Legislature, and Larry Miller’s decision to pull Brokeback Mountain from his theaters.

Utah Roman Catholic Bishop is appointed San Francisco Archbishop

Utah Catholic Bishop George H. Niederauer, who has been the leader of the Utah Diocese for the last decade has been appointed as archbishop of San Francisco.

He is known to the local activist community as an outspoken voice against the war in Iraq. Local priests appreciate Neiderauer’s position of allowing them autonomy in their parishes. Citizens and members of the church know Neiderauer for being an advocate for the people.

Neiderauer will be missed in Utah, by people of all faiths and people not associated with organized churches.

Crosses memorializing falling state highway officers

There is a lot of controversy over the lawsuit against Utah Highway Patrol by the Utah Atheist organization. The lawsuit aims to get the crosses taken off of state highways that memorialize state highway officers. Atheists have made it clear that they want the officers to be memorialized, just not with Christian symbols.

I can understand the latter point.
I’m personally not sure, however, that a lawsuit is necessary and that, as with all activist issues, protests, letters, and other methods of being vocal about the issue might be more appropriate.

The families of slain officers have been hurt by this action and further feel that the timing of the lawsuit with the holiday season was insensitive.
I can understand that point too.

More on Gift Giving

Jen’s Green Journal has an excellent list and review of places to obtain socially responsible, environmentally friendly gifts for the holidays and other occasions. I have had her link on my Green Cafe Gift Giving Ideas page, but I wanted to highlight Jenni’s in a separate post here.

Jenni offers personal reviews of items she has personally looked into and recommends, something I don’t necessarily have the time to do. So for a more in depth look at gifts you can purchase, visit Jenni’s gift ideas list.

It’s way cool, a great networking tool and benefits the community. This project has been going on Buy Nothing Day since 1997. It’s got my wheels turning!
