Camp Democracy photos and posts

I’ll be posting photos and accounts of my Camp Democracy experience very soon. As a teaser, watch for photos of me and Tom in costume, photos of speakers like Ray McGovern,Arun Ghandi,Kevin Zeese and Lester Brown; banner making; lots of messages about the Bush regime; and some great political art. I’ll also be describing the arrest action of the “Pentagon Five” on Saturday. That one will leave you shaking your head in disbelief.

I hope to also post some sound files of some of the speakers we were able to record.

I’m swamped at my school this week with our move into our new building and our opening and no computers yet, so my blogging will be sporadic, but I’ll get the photos up as soon as I can.

Dedicating September 11th to Bush

I met and worked with David Swanson this past weekend. Here is his piece published on Truthout yesterday:

Camp Democracy

Monday 11 September 2006

George W. Bush is an ordinary human being, in fact a quite stupid one. So are all of his handlers. They are ordinary people, and we have the power, should we choose to use it, to throw them out of our public housing.

This simple fact is hidden from us not just by the media constantly instructing us that we can make no difference, not just by lies connecting the crimes of 9/11 to Iraq, or Iraq or Iran to weapons they do not have, and not just by the deference to power of the devoted neo-conservative minority.

We’re Back

We are back from Camp Democracy and I have lots to post. Six of us did actions at the White House, we made banners that we brought home and we heard a host of speakers, including Arun Ghandi today.

I gained much insight into the continuing anti-war movement, including reinforcement of something I and many others here in Utah have been trying to emphasize to others:

The same messaging strategies are not working. We must change our strategies.

I’ll be posting my exepriences over the next few days.

Cemp Democracy Begins Today

Camp Democracy officially begins today. Camp Democracy is a non-partisan camp for peace, democracy, and the restoration of the rule of law. It is focused not only on ending the war but also on righting injustices here at home and on holding accountable the Bush Administration and Congress.

Myths About Rocky Anderson’s activities in last week’s rallies

In The Wasatch Front’s post Questus Furore – Civility and Disagreement, I was disappointed to read:

When Utah did not erupt in spontaneous revulsion, the mayor [Rocky Anderson] took it upon himself to organize protests against the President’s presence. (Unanswered and unexplored is the question of what city resources and employees were used to organize these protests. Seems like a job for some enterprising reporter out there. Too bad the local newspapers – the Salt Lake Tribune, the Deseret News – don’t employ any.)

Here is my response to that statement:

I would like to clarify that Rocky Anderson did not organize any of the rallies in Salt Lake on August 30.

Response to “Cheers, Jeers for Bush”

Public Forum Letters – Response to Cheers, Jeers for Bush 08/31/06:

The Republican Party has become a quasi-government organization under the Bush Administration. The evidence of this continues to mount starting with overthrowing the 2000 presidential elections by conspiring to make mass challenges to opposition voters. Other examples include taking control of mass media ownership. The Republican Party has become an extra-Constitutional institution with the ability to subvert national elections and manage war propaganda.

The Utah Republican Party confirmed my worst suspicions at their “Pro-Bush” rally on August 30th. The contrasts between the, “Rock-Against-Rumsfeld” at Pioneer Park and the “Pro-Bush” rally at Washington Square were striking. At Pioneer Park the crowd was surrounded by 50 or more Salt Lake Police with riot gear and squad cars parked around the perimeter. When I arrived at the “Pro-Bush” rally I saw three police officers in uniform standing on the sidelines chatting. Orrin Hatch was speaking when I arrived there. I shouted out to him as loud as I could from the crowd. I exclaimed, “[Hatch] refused to
see the peace delegation at your office to hear our grievances.” At this point I was grabbed from behind kicked and kneed hard in the back. A man grabbed my arm and doubled his fist to punch me (See Cheers, Jeers for Bush, Salt Lake Tribune August 31st). The police at the event did not intervene. I can’t help but feel this is deliberate cooperation between the Republican Party and law enforcement agencies to squash dissent and intimidate critics of an out of control President.

My First Post on One Utah

I have been invited in the past to become an author on One Utah. I’ve been hesitating because I don’t have a lot of confidence in my writing skills. I finally decided to take the plunge and posted my first article. today on the No Child Left Behind Act’s Military Recruiting Clause.

I think I still need to spice up my writing a bit and am happy that there are those out there willing to help me along with that.

Commentaries on last week’s rallying events

NOTE: If you decide to submit a Letter to the Editor or Opinion Piece, please also send it to Dee so that it can be published here, just in case the papers decide not to publish it!

Here it is, folks – Today’s commentaries on last week’s events surrounding the visit of the Terrible Three to Utah (Rumsfeld, Rice, Bush). I would urge everyone to read these and formulate your own responses. Contacts and guidelines are below the links to the commentaries.

Photo of Assault

The Salt Lake Tribune published in its paper yesterday and online today the story below.  The photo is of my friend Nate who was upset with Orrin Hatch (see my post on this) being assaulted by an elderly Bush supporter.

Here’s the problem with this coverage.  The media has clearly taken a photo of Nate being publicly assaulted.  Isnt’ that a crime?    Also, the article does not in any way explain what happened here – it’s just  a photo.  I’m really disappointed in this “coverage”.  Read the real story about what happened  here and here.
