Helen Thomas speaks in Salt Lake

Helen Thomas, long time White House Correspondent and Journalist, spoke last night in Salt Lake City. People who went to hear her speak had to be turned away because the venue quickly filled up to the point of standing room only. Thomas is frequently referred to as “The First Lady of the Press.”

Journalist Helen Thomas lived up to her reputation Saturday in Salt Lake City, delivering a fiery speech to a standing-room-only crowd of hundreds that a tent-revival minister might be proud of.
“Reporters were gullible to the White House spin,” she said. “Our much touted standards of fairness, and above all truth, the holy grail of our profession, took a holiday.”
Of Bush, a man she calls a staunch conservative who views the world in blacks and whites, she said, “He wanted to be known as a war president. He is.”
Thomas, who has covered nine presidents in her 57 years as White House correspondent for United Press International, criticized Bush for thinking he is “above the law,” citing his secret authorization of domestic wiretapping and the treatment of detainees.
“I believe people can handle the truth, and deserve no less,” she said.

Candidate’s Statement

Today I submitted my candidate’s bio and statement to the Valley Journals. Here is what I submitted. I was limited to 150 words:

Deanna “Dee” L. Taylor (47)is a first time candidate, running for Salt Lake
County Council in District 5.

Deanna is a member and Co-Coordinator of the Desert Greens Green Party of
Utah. She is an Alternate Delegate to the Green Party of the United States.
Deanna has been a public school educator for 23 years, holding degrees in
Music Education and Curriculum and Instruction and teaching licenses in
Secondary Music and Special Education. She currently teaches grades 7-12 in a
Salt Lake City public charter school.

Deanna also participates with People for Peace and Justice of Utah as an
advocate for peace and justice issues.

Deanna sees transportation as one of the biggest issues facing our community.
She feels that revenues need to be used to build more bus routes and TRAX
lines so that constituents feel more compelled to use mass transit more and
cars less.

Camp Democracy photos – 3 – Chain Gang

Perhaps the highlight of our experience at Camp Democracy was becoming involved with the Bush Chain Gang. I’ve done street theater before but never like this. Tom and I both dressed up in costume multiple times and did actions. I was Donald Rumsfeld the times I was in costume and Tom alternated between Cheney and Rumsfeld. We walked around the mall at various times and we did an action at the White House. We were like magnets – people flocked to us for photos.

Bill Moyer(not to be confused with Bill Moyers with an “s”), the creator of the Chain Gang, was there leading our actions. He is the person dressed as a cop in the photos below.

We took the chain gang to “Busboys and Poets” restaurant on Saturday. What a great activist restaurant. We were a hit!

While en route to the White House we were asked by a Park Police officer where we were headed. Being truthful, we told her. As anticipated we were greeted by the secret service who let us in to the “White House Viewing Area” after collecting identification. While there a couple who had just been married had their photo taken with us – the first ever wedding photo with the Bush Chain Gang.

After the White House action we took the Chain Gang out to dinner and then went bar hopping. What a hit the Chain Gang was in these establishments!

What I discovered is the barrier that is broken for diaolguing with this medium. People were much more interested in talking about Bush’s war crimes than if I just walked up to them and handed them literature.

Watch for the Bush Chain Gang hitting the streets in Salt Lake sometime this fall…….
