I pledge allegiance to all life
in its interdependent diversity;
and to the Planet upon which it exists;
one World, under the sky, undividable
with harmony and balance for all. ~ Tom King, 2001, for Blue Sky Institute -

Images and Stereotypes
I understand the point here, but couldn’t they have chosen a character other then one missing a few teeth and wearing bibs with no shirt? Some of the most racist people I’ve ever met come from the suburbs, have all their teeth, and wear all the latest sweatshop fashions.
Since this guy looks like a few of my neighbors and people I grew up around, I’d say the Native American could tell him to go back to Scotland via Ireland.
I don’t mean to get too sensitive on you, Dee, I know you didn’t mean to offend anyone with this post. But these kinds of negative hillbilly images strike a real nerve with me and I just wanted to let you know. There are some real redneck jerks in my region, believe me. But I honestly don’t believe they represent the majority of us.

Re: Images and Stereotypes
You are right, Chad. I should have been more sensitive to that. Yes, I agree, it’s too bad this wasn’t portraying the white collar person being the racist, which is too often and sadly the actual case.
I’m from your neighboring state of Maryland and grew up with a lot of folks like how you describe. I just wasn’t thinking!
Thanks for pointing this out.

Re: Images and Stereotypes
That’s quite alright, Dee. Sometimes I think we’d all be better off if we put more stuff like this up so we can share our thoughts and feelings about our misconceptions and stereotypes. God knows I’ve got my own demons to exercize. That’s the main reason we started the Appalachian Greens blog to hopefully try and dispell some of the myths about us.
Hope all’s well out there in Utah, my thoughts are with you all and good luck to your candidates. Sorry I haven’t been by your blog for awhile. I’ll have to make it point to drop by more often. I love your work!
Re: Images and Stereotypes
Will you be in Tuscon?
Re: Images and Stereotypes
No, I won’t be able to make out to Tuscon. Really wish I could, but the truth is I wouldn’t be able to get any time off work, plus I can’t afford it.
Someday, I’ll have to try to get over my fear of flying in an airplane, if I’m ever going to able to make one of these Green conventions. I really would like to get together and meet with you all sometime.
