The continuing media saga

Oh, I get it now…..here’s the real news:
In today’s Deseret News the top two headlines:

  • Rivalry goes U.’s way
  • Rivalry runs red
and in the Salt Lake Tribune, the top article:

  • Update: Utah survives BYU comeback, wins 41-34 in OT

    ….all about college football!
(as I bang the heel of my hand to my forehead….)

Silly me thinking there was more important news. As Napolean Dynamite would say “Gosh…..idiot!”

So the Deseret News has an article on incumbent Orrin Hatch – a few articles down below the headlines:
48% say replace Hatch, but he isn’t worried – Democrat Ashdown says he sees an opportunity

No mention of Green Party challenger Julian Hatch.

Guess football is more important to our local media.

Here is my letter that I have submitted for the opinion section of the Deseret News:

(NOTE: When I received the comment about the Salt Lake Tribune having published an announcement, I sent a correction to my letter. Corrections are made in bold.)

Why is local media ignoring Julian Hatch’s announcement?

A press release was sent out November 11th announcing the Green Party candidacy of Julian Hatch, distant cousin of Orrin Hatch, for U.S. Senate. The Associated Press picked up the announcement and over two dozen
papers, t.v.and radio stations world-wide have, and are continuing to, publish the news.
People are writing to the Hatch campaign from all over the nation.

While the Salt Lake Tribune published a one paragraph announcement on Friday, the Deseret News has chosen to ignore this announcement, despite the fact that it was sent personally to about two dozen reporters’ email addresses and faxed to the offices of both major papers by the Hatch for U.S. Senate Media Team and the Green Party of the United States. No reporter from either the Tribune or Deseret News attended the kick-off campaign press conference they were invited to. Yet in today’s Deseret News, an article appears called “48% say replace Hatch, but he isn’t worried ” in which the democrat challenger is interviewed and no mention is made of Julian Hatch. I would like to know why our local papers are ignoring Julian Hatch who promises an aggressive and public campaign against Orrin Hatch?

    1. The Tribune announced the candidacy the other day.

    2. Hey, thank you! I am signed up for Google alerts but I did not receive notification of that notice.
When I got your message I did a search on the Trib website and here is what I found:
Cousin to challenge Hatch for Senate
A distant cousin of Sen. Orrin Hatch will run for his seat in the U.S. Senate. The Green Party of Utah has named Julian Hatch, 51, as its Senate candidate. Hatch is a disabled veteran who opposes the war in Iraq and promises to conserve public lands in the West. Other
challengers are Democrat Pete Ashdown and Personal Choice candidate Roger I. Price. – Matt Canham
While this is appreciated, this is a rather brief mention in a buried article in the Utah section, while the t.v. stations showed Julian’s photo, NPR did a piece and newspapers all over the world published the entire AP article.
Also, it is important to note that today’s article in the Deseret News made no mention of Julian’s campaign, despite two press releases sent out over the past week.
Thanks again for noticing this and letting me know!

    3. no problemo
