Walmart’s “Community Store”

Walmart will stop at nothing until it has its presence in every community.

After being denied a permit to build a big box store in a Utah community, it has now reapplied for a permit to build a “community” store.

I really wish that communities would examine the issues beyond revenue. It is getting more and more difficult for small business owners to survive, let alone starting a business. It would be nice to see communities promote and value buying local and building local – and providing resources to support locally owned business.

Wal-Mart Employees Revolt

Wal-Mart workers walk out Employees at one store in Florida stage a protest—and win a reprieve

For months, politicians and activists have been saying that the low prices at the world’s largest retailer, Wal-Mart Stores, come at a tremendous cost to its low-paid employees. They point to lawsuits that contend the company discriminates against women and forces low-paid employees to work through lunch breaks and after their shifts, without extra compensation. Wal-Mart has also been boosting its political contributions to stop initiatives aimed at forcing the retailer to raise pay and benefits.

Earlier this week about 200 Wal-Mart employees in Florida walked out in protest of Wal-Mart’s practices to employees.

Quarantine Wal-Mart

Back in January I wrote about The Ruckus Society’s developed campaign with other organizations to “quarantine” Wal-Mart.

Ruckus is teaming up with Jobs with Justice and ACORN to bring a National Quarantine of Wal-Mart. On Friday, June 2, during Wal-Mart’s annual shareholders meeting, thousands of concerned citizens dressed in hazmat suits, and armed with yellow caution tape, will be putting Wal-Mart sites across the country under “quarantine”.

WalMart’s Bank Plan: Not in Utah, say opponents

WalMart now wants to take over the banking business. Since it’s easy to get a bank charter in Utah, our state seems a good target for the giant corporation.

Not without a fight.

Today’s papers have posted articles on what opponents are doing to keep the richest corporation in the world from invading:
Wal-Mart bank plan slammed at FDIC
Public hearing: Industry warns of dire outcome if Utah plans come to life
(Includes links to other articles)
Wal-Mart foes speak up: Keep to banking issue at hand, Garn tells hearing

More than a dozen organizations testified against Wal-Mart’s application before the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, which has never before held a public hearing on a bank application. The hearing continues today. Many witnesses worried that if the government allowed Wal-Mart to begin banking, even in the limited terms outlined in its application, it would lead to a dangerous combination of commerce and banking by a company known for crushing competitors and driving out small businesses. Davey is standing up to Goliath yet again – let’s hope that Davey wins this time.

Maryland creates law to require Walmart to increase health care coverage

Sometimes, Davey wins.

An article published on Common Dreams announces a law passed by Maryland legislators that targets Wal-Mart and requires an increas in health care coverage by companies with more than 10,000 employees. This law requires these companies to spend at least 8 percent of their payrolls on employee health benefits.

This “fair share” law is in the works in about 30 other states and the passage of such a law in Maryland has given inspiration to legislators across the country.
In each state proposal, affected companies that don’t meet the payment threshold would have to pay the difference into a state fund to assist the uninsured.

Maryland’s passage of this law came after its Republican Governor, Bog Ehrlich, issued a veto.

A post-industrial Christmas Carol

David Rovics sent out this message last week:

I haven’t recorded it yet, but I thought I’d send on this lyric since it’s so very in season. Hope to see you on the road and in the streets!

Wal-Mart
David Rovics

There’s a thousand acres becoming clear
Cut down the forest, the big one’s here
Cover the ground with a mass of tar
Make sure there’s room for every car
One floor half mile massive sprawl
One store wonder super mall
It’s spreading out far and wide
Taking over the countryside
Say goodbye to your forests, they’re going down
Wal-Mart is coming to town

Goliath on the Prowl

Walmart is eyeing a community south of Salt Lake – Saratoga Springs. The artile headline in today’s Deseret News reads:
Wal-Mart eyes Saratoga:Officials see a need in north Utah County city

See a need? The mayor sees this possiblity as “a great thing”.

Meanwhile, the giant corporation has hired more lobbyists this week to ramp up its opposition to a groundbreaking bill that would force the retail giant to offer better benefits, a step that could be replicated in state houses across the nation next year.
