Stop the Divine Strake Vigil and Press Conference

Tonight members of Utah groups participating in the May 28 action at the Nevada Test Site, along with other citizens, joined in a vigil to voice opposition to the Divine Strake Test being held next month at the test site. Channel 4 ABC News showed up and interviewed a few of the participants and filmed sign-holders and the Radical Cheerleaders.

Blast safe? NOT!!!

While accounts and rumors of a delay in the Divine Strake Test are being circulated, Senator Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) wants pledge that the test will be “safe”, and Rep Jim Matheson (D-Utah)is “satisfied” with a delay.

It seems that Greens are among the few demanding that there BE NO TEST AT ALL.

Today’s Salt Lake Tribune has an article on the hazards of such a test/blast.

An environmental consultant who has studied the Nevada Test Site says there is likely radioactive contamination at the location where the Pentagon plans to conduct a major explosives test, potentially dispersing the contaminants.

But Darwin Morgan, a spokesman for the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), which operates the Nevada Test Site, said extensive tests have shown the Divine Strake test site is not contaminated.

Like, I really believe the Defense Department.

Enough “stuff” already. Nevada Test site experiments are NOT SAFE! There is no reason for our elected officials to be even waivering on this! This is another example of our politicians holding out instead of making a concrete statement and decision. DEMAND A CANCELLATION.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Utah Peace and Social Justice Organizations Announce Joining International Coalition to Protest Divine Strake Detonation

This Mother’s Day we honor our Mother Earth, we grieve with the mothers who have lost children to war, and we stand with mothers everywhere who want to protect their children from the fear, the violence and the insidious health effects of weapons testing.

Shundahai Network, People for Peace and Justice of Utah, The Green Party of Utah – Desert Greens, PomPomsnotBombBombs, and the Blue Sky Institute have joined the Stop Divine Strake Coalition, to pressure the Defense Threat Reduction Agency and the Nuclear National Security Agency to cancel the Divine Strake detonation currently still scheduled for June 2. (There are conflicting reports of a delay until June 23)

    STOP THE DIVINE STRAKE!

  • Postponing the Divine Strake Test? Hmmm….

People, especially politicians, are all excited because the DoE came out today with the statement that the Divine Strake test is being postponed until later in June.

But in the Salt Lake Tribune article, there is one paragraph that reads:

The Energy Department’s partner in the test, the Defense Threat Reduction
Agency, denied any delay late Monday.
“As far as we’re concerned, we’re still saying June 2,” said Irene Smith, a
spokeswoman for DTRA in Washington. “We have not received any direction that
would cause us to change the June 2 date at this point.”

    Hmmm….

Another thing that bothers me is politicians stating that they are “satisifed” with the delay.

    Satisifed with the delay????

No one should be satisfied until the test is entirely CANCELLED.

    The action will continue.

Thousands of Utahns Comment to BLM

Thousands of people sent in their comments to the BLM during a public comment period to oppose proposals to build a rail route or a loading facility to service the proposed high-level nuclear waste storage site, Private Fuel Storage (PFS) in western Utah. I sent in my early last week.

The State of Utah alone filed over 40 pages of documentation and legal arguments against the proposal.

Here are two articles I found today:

Diebold voting machine demonstrations – and updated info on Utah’s voting machines

Kathy Dopp has sent this out:

TODAY there will be a Diebold voting machine demonstration in the hall of the Park City Municipal Building on Marsac Ave in Park City.
Please attend. The Summit County Clerk’s website is: http://www.summitcounty.org/clerk/

Also, please consider taking these positions:

    1. Utah Counties are looking for poll workers for the primary and general election. There is a mandatory training session which will be very educational to attend to see what procedures will be in place for the election using the new Diebold voting machines, and

    2. Diebold has contacted Utah Job Service to hire technicians to work with its voting machines here in Utah during elections.

Please apply or volunteer for these jobs as they will be good places to observe the process. There will be a required training session soon for poll workers who are paid $8/hour (at least in Summit county).

Kanab “Natural Family Resolution”: Mayor of Kanab Speaks Out

I have been offering posts here on the Kanab Natural Family Resolution and the controversy surrounding it.

Today you can read about the Mayor of Kanab’s “side” of the issue. This is part one of five in a series of articles the Salt Lake Tribune will be publishing this week on four “different types of families” in Kanab:

Today: The resolute mayor who pushed the resolution then and defends it now.
Tuesday: A hardworking doctor and an industrious mother who are rearing seven kids.
Wednesday: A councilwoman who still feels the sting of being unable to bear children.
Thursday: A single mother who works two jobs to support her three kids.
Friday: Two women who fell in love 16 years ago, raised a son and now care for a “full quiver” of cats.
