Rocky’s Protesting Highly Unpopular With GOP

Today’s news has pieces where Utah GOP asks backers to call Rocky and object to his protest.

The Utah Republican Party is asking its supporters to call Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson and tell him they disapprove of his scheduled participation Wednesday in an anti-war rally preceding a visit by President Bush. The party put out radio ads Monday asking people to call Anderson and “tell him to stop embarrassing Utah.” The mayor’s office had received 183 calls by late afternoon. The office hired three temporary workers to staff the phone lines, and they took calls from throughout Utah and even some from out of state, one of the temporary workers said.

What a waste of time and money.

Hartley said he wasn’t concerned about the extra cost to the mayor’s office for hiring people to answer the phones.
“If that encumbers the city that he represents at all, I’d say that’s Rocky’s fault,” Hartley said. “I have no sympathy for him if his office has to incur some financial responsibility to take all the phone calls from people who don’t like what he’s doing.”
Hartley’s radio ad tells listeners that Sheehan’s beliefs are anti-American and that her “cut-and-run strategy” is an effort “to convince you that America should retreat.” Ads started running Monday with heavy play in Utah’s rural counties, where residents are “hopping mad this man is representing our state to the world,” Hartley said.

Senator Bob Bennett says that he believes that everyone, including Anderson, should have respect for the office of the U.S. president. “Rocky has made a serious mistake” by calling for protests against Bush during the president’s visit, Bennett said.

Well, first, Rocky didn’t call for the protest, average citizens did. And believe me there are folks involved in organizing this rally who have never been involved before, a reflection of the dissatisfaction of citizens in Bush’s Administration. And while I might agree with Mr. Bennett that “everyone” should respect the office of U.S. president, “everyone” should also be taught to respect all exsitence, not “offices”. I do not agree that “everyone” needs to respect Mr. Bush the war criminal and fabricator of facts to the American Public. The man needs to be impeached and indicted and this will be a display of that demand and an expression of Utahns dissatisfaction of such. These actions are the “respectful” and rightful way to demonstrate this.

It astounds me that Republicans are making such a big fuss over this – and going to lengths to spend their party money on radio ads and paid telephone petitioners – telling their followers how to protest. I tend to think that members of this party are afraid – of the medai attention that rarely happens with Utah’s small activist community – but that is likely to put Salt Lake on the map again this year.

August 30 – evening program

I have learned that there will be an evening program on Wednesday August 30 at Pioneer Park, as an add-on to the days’ rally activites, with entertainment and more speakers.

It will be from 6-8pm.

Last night I attended a party at a friend’s house where we made signs in preparation for Bush’s visit this week. The entire driveway was filled with people with paintbrushes and other sign-making materials.

Here are just a few photos:

The Green Party of Utah (dba Desert Greens Green Party of Utah) has been a founding participant of the Salt Lake American Muslim Festival since it began 4 years ago. Here are photos of the event this weekend:

Complaint Against the GPUS

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote a post on California’s Proposal to the GPUS, regarding Utah’s affiliation with the GPUS. The complaint is framed to be against the GPUS but the intent is to unseat the current Utah delegation by a group of people whose mission it is to disrupt the Green Party of the United States by seating people in Utah who meet their personal agendas. Most folks who have weighed in on this issue on the national discussion lists are not in favor of this proposal as it is clearly biased and does not support an independent. outside investigation, calling instead for an internal investigation. No internal investigation would be unbiased.

The Green Party of Texas has developed and submitted another proposal calling for an outside, independent investigation, which I support:

Building Stadiums and Building Communities – Priorities

This week’s City Weekly has an article on the new REAL Soccer Stadium: Taxpayers didn’t vote to build a soccer stadium. So why are they building one?

Salt Lake Countians polled overwhelmingly indicated a big NO to using tax dollars to fund such a stadium in Salt Lake County. The county mayor, Peter Corroon, emphatically stated a big NO to building it. But he has changed his tune and is using $55 million to see that is built. It is a joint venture between a private entity and the the county government – something the county voters did NOT vote on. Further, the county council refused to put this issue to a referendum.

What’s up with THAT? Shouldn’t we the voters and taxpayers decide this?

America’s Administration is spending more money than ever before on war and killing and supporting (financially) nations that support war and occupation and killing. This results in less money for programs and services here in Amercia. So what do our elected officials do with those funds? Instead of using it for HUMAN NEEDS and vital services, our tax dollars are being spent on ventures with private entitities to provide entertainment for people who aren’t directly affected by health care needs (including lack of insurance), having to work 2 to 3 jobs to survive, homelessness, or lack of transportation.

I was talking to a young African-American woman the other day who has just moved here (temporarily) from Boston to take advantage of an opportunity to get her nurses training here. She was working a temporary labor job helping to move my school into its new building.

This women told me that while the cost of living is higher in Boston, so is the minimum wage there and she said that usually, expenses even out and one isn’t left deciding to pay rent or buy food. Not so here, according to her. Not only do folks here who work low-paying jobs have to work 2 or 3 jobs to survive, the minimum wage here is what the government dictates it should be (the minimum – $5.15/hour) AND they still have to make those critical decisions, facing possible eviction from their homes or going hungry.

There’s something wrong with this picture.

Building stadiums……or building communities. Which is it? Obviously our current council in Salt Lake Council has its priorities set to cater to those who don’t have to worry about how they will feed their children today.

August 30 Rallies – When Bush, Rice, Rumsfeld are in Town

Salt Lake will be a-buzz on Wednesday. Multiple rallies are popping up everywhere. At least one of them has created quite a bit of convtroversy.

  • A group called The Center to Prevent Corporate Media Lying has been issued a permit to hold a “Death to Israel” rally, which has a lot of people disturbed, particularly those in our Jewish Community here in Utah. Although this group’s First Amendment Rights are acknowledged, the title of the rally has brought forth a lot of controversy with its insinuations. The rally organizer, Robert Breeze, an attorney, says that the goal is to protest “the torture and murder inflicted on Muslims by Israel and the penetration of the U.S. media by Israeli intelligence.” Mr. Breeze pays proptestors, including homeless people, to help get his message out. It appears that the message is to protest Israel, but the title implies death to Jews in many peoples’ eyes.

Mr. Breeze, please change the title of your rally.

  • A Pro Bush Rally will be held in the evening of August 30. James Evans, organizer of the original rally at Washington Square, said Friday that the event is moving to the airfield at 765 N. 2200 West, where Bush touched down last year when he visited Utah to speak at the convention for the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Organizers of this event say that “they don’t want protesters’ voices to define Utah” and hope the president will join them.
“We got word from the White House the president would like to support what we’re doing,” said James Evans, chairman of the Salt Lake County Republican Party. “There’s no way we’re going to have Rocky and Cindy Sheehan define Utah. Their actions are in the minority,” Evans said. But organizers of the anti-Bush rally say many Utahns are concerned with the direction the country is headed under Bush and the Republican Congress.
Anderson said he welcomes the pro-Bush rally.
“I would really love to hear people say they support unconstitutional, warrantless wiretapping of American citizens. I’d love to hear them stand up and say how they support the Patriot Act, how they support the president’s justifications for torturing other human beings.”
While the mayor believes it is his patriotic duty to protest the president’s policies, he has been criticized as being an ungracious host and as acting unstatesmanlike.
“Mayor Anderson has been an utter disaster as the official host of Salt Lake City,” Evans said. “We felt obligated to send the proper message.”
