Yesterday was the anniversary of Bob Dylan’s 1964 release of The Times They Are A-Changin’ album.
I thought this was appropriate especially now to post these lyrics. They are a reminder and affirmation of what we must do to be the change we advocate.

THE TIMES THEY ARE A-CHANGIN’

Words and Music by Bob Dylan
1963, 1968 Warner Bros. Inc
Renewed 1991 Special Rider Music

Come gather ’round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You’ll be drenched to the bone.
If your time to you
Is worth savin’
Then you better start swimmin’
Or you’ll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin’.

40 Years of promoting war: G.I. Joe

Yes, folks, it’s true. G.I. Joe is 40. My, oh my, where has the time gone?

In case you are wondering what to get your child for their birthday this year, never fear. Lots of places are selling the G.I. Joe Doll for tremendous savings! It’s G.I. Joe’s 40th birthday year! (Today is the actual anniversary day). The Army never had it so good.

Just do a google search and you will see all the different toy vendors selling the doll. Here is one description by eToys.com:

When he was first introduced in 1964, G.I. Joe took the toy world by storm. With 21 movable parts and loads of detailed accessories, “America’s Movable Fighting Man” quickly became a sensation and a new way to play for boys across the nation. With uniforms, equipment and packaging patterned after the original, the G.I. Joe 40th Anniversary Collection is sure to rekindle the fond memories of childhood.

This Beach Head Action Figure is an authentically re-created G.I. Joe figure, and he looks just the way he was introduced in 1964. Includes tent, tent poles, flamethrower, first aid pouch, pistol belt, mess kit, knife, fork, spoon and Marine Field Manual. Figure measures approximately 12 inches tall.

But wait….there’s more! You can join the G.I.Joe’s Collector Club!

It’s time for G.I. Joe to retire. Get a grip people. While people holler about mistreatment in a variety of scenarios, including bullying, etc., many of these same people advocate violence and bullying by virtue of the fact that they purchase toys such as these for their children, because they love the military, guns, hunting, and shooting paintballs. What kind of mixed message is that?

If you find a G.I. Joe Doll at a thrift store or yard sale (I would never advocate purcasing a new one), do this:
– Buy it
– Paint it pink and put flowers on it
– Take it to your local recruiting office
– Drop it off as a gift – preferrably anonymously

Invite Orrin to Retire

Be sure to invite U.S. Senator Orrin Hatch from Utah to retire at tonight’s Nutcakes Rally.

Having run on a platform that included advocating term limits, Hatch has broken his initial pledge to serve for only two terms. 30 years later, Hatch, now 72, is still in office.

The gig was up a long time ago. Nutcakes unite!

“Nutcakes” Rally – Orrin Hatch to be honored

Orrin Hatch will be “honored” for his 30 years of service as U.S. Senator in Utah Wednesday, February 8 at 7pm at the Little America Hotel in Salt Lake City.

Hatch first ran on a platform of “term limits”.

Hatch called the thousands of demonstrators “nutcakes” at a rally when Georg W. Bush was in town in August.

To let party-goers know how much we peace advocates appreciate Mr. Hatch’s sentiments, we are going to hold a “nutcakes for peace” rally outside the hotel and distribute “Orrin’s Favorite Nutcakes Recipe”.
On the back of the recipe card will be a list of upcoming rallies and other events.
Julian Hatch, Green Party of Utah candidate for U.S. Senate, will be on hand to help deliver the message:

Orrin’s Favorite Nutcakes Recipe

1 part free speech
1 part free thinking
1 part courage
Mix well.
Bake until “democracy” appears.
Enjoy!

I received this letter today from Medea Benjamin. Please consider signing this call to action:

Dear local Green Party coordinator,

As Green Party members who hold non-violence and feminism as core values, we’d greatly appreciate it if you would sign and help us circulate this women-initiated Urgent Call for Peace in Iraq. We hope to gather over 100,000 signatures on the Call by March 8, International Women’s Day, when we will deliver them to U.S. embassies/consulates/federal offices all over the world.

You can help by signing the Call today at http://www.womensaynotowar.org/ , spreading the word to your friends, downloading a banner to put on your website (http://www.womensaynotowar.org/article.php?id=698) and joining us in action on March 8. Radical Cheerleaders featured on local blog

Ethan of SLC Spin has a post about Pom Poms Not Bomb Bombs (of which I am a member), by request, that has generated some comments. A lot of the comments made it apparent to me that folks don’t know about radical cheerleading as a movement, so I made these comments to his post:

I am wondering if any of your readers have gone to our website, Pom Poms Not Bomb Bombs?
We are a group of very diverse individuals who decided to get our peace and justice messages out through cheerleading. We have been
featured in Salt Lake’s CATALYST, have an appearance in the movie “This Divided State”, and recently had our photo published in the Chicago Tribune.

Radical Cheerleading is an international movement, is fun and entertaining!

We appear in the St. Patrick’s Day and Pride Day Parades (our favorite parade chant is “To the Left! To the Left! Not to the righ, To the Left!”) and at all the rallies in town.

Here is a post about radical cheerleading that might possibly interest some of your readers.

I just learned of this Amnesty International music project called Make Some Noise. Here is the story:
High-profile international artists. Classic Lennon tracks. United for human rights. This is Make Some Noise – a mix of music, celebration and action in support of Amnesty International. Music can change the world, but only with your voice.

Utah Roman Catholic Bishop is appointed San Francisco Archbishop

Utah Catholic Bishop George H. Niederauer, who has been the leader of the Utah Diocese for the last decade has been appointed as archbishop of San Francisco.

He is known to the local activist community as an outspoken voice against the war in Iraq. Local priests appreciate Neiderauer’s position of allowing them autonomy in their parishes. Citizens and members of the church know Neiderauer for being an advocate for the people.

Neiderauer will be missed in Utah, by people of all faiths and people not associated with organized churches.
