I’m not listening, la, la, la, la, la (fingers in ears)

That’s Bush and Cheney on the “Surge”. From today’s AP article in the Deseret News:

President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney say they will not budge from sending more U.S. troops to Iraq no matter how much Congress opposes it. “I fully understand they could try to stop me,” Bush said of the Democrat-run Congress. “But I’ve made my decision, and we’re going forward.”

That’s right. Forget Congress. Forget the people that the Congress represents. Forget the fact that more Americans than not now oppose the war and sending any more troops to Iraq.

Defiant bully dictators. That’s what we are dealing with.

A defiant Cheney, meanwhile, said Democrats offered criticism without credible alternatives. He pointedly reminded lawmakers that Bush is commander in chief.
“You cannot run a war by committee,” the vice president said of congressional input.
“Some of my buddies in Texas say, ‘You know, let them fight it out. What business is it of ours?”‘ Bush said of Iraqis. “And that’s a temptation that I know a lot of people feel. But if we do not succeed in Iraq, we will leave behind a Middle East which will endanger America.”

But wait! It gets better:

Yet when asked if he owes the Iraqi people an apology for botching the management of the war, he said “Not at all.”
“We liberated that country from a tyrant,” Bush said. “I think the Iraqi people owe the American people a huge debt of gratitude.”

The Iraqi people are FAR from liberated and the U.S. presence continues to make the situation worse. Sending more troops is NOT the answer. But what is an equal, if not more so, of a travesty is that the U.S. constitution and democratic way of doing things means nothing here. The Bushites will stop at nothing to get their way.

Dems will approve request more money for Iraq War

Bush to seek $100 bln more war funds: House report

Senior Democrats, who take control of both houses of Congress next year, have indicated they would support additional funds for U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, even though many want a phased withdrawal to begin in 2007.

In other words they [the Dems] are afraid to oppose their corporate masters.

Of course – THIS is the solution!

Yes, that’s it! DOUBLE our troops in Iraq! Why didn’t I think of that?

Pentagon’s Plan: More US Troops in Iraq
Boosting presence and aid, and an anti-Sadr offensive, carry risks but offer the best path to victory, military officials say
.

And to make the deal even sweeter, let’s use gambling language to persuade! Yes, it’s a gamble that this just might work!

“I think it is worth trying,” a defense official said. “But you can’t have the rhetoric without the resources. This is a double down” — the gambling term for upping a bet.

This war has always been a gamble. But just who is winning this bet?

Invest in Peace – Be Green

My Sister Green in Georgia gave a speech at the gates of Ft. Benning, Georgia this past weekend during the annual Close the School of Americas event:

Invest in Peace – Be Green
[This is my speech Sunday, November 19, 2006, at the gates of Ft. Benning at the School of Americas Watch vigil in Columbus, Georgia.]

Thank you!

Like you, I was encouraged by our nation’s recent dramatic rejection of the Bush administration, but in order to SHUT DOWN the School of Americas, we must go further. THE GREEN PARTY’S platform represents the historical imperative for the future because our platform and our positions are based on values and principles of HUMAN RIGHTS AND RESPECT for life.

This election was an ANTI WAR, PRO PEACE message from America. THE GREEN PARTY is the ONLY ANTI WAR, PRO PEACE party in our nation!

The election was a rejection of the War on Terrorism and a rejection of the so-called USA PATRIOT act and a rejection of torture. THE GREEN PARTY has joined You in demanding an END to the War on Terrorism and an END to the USA PATRIOT act. Say “NO” to Torture! SUPPORT PEACE!

Our nation is still finding her voice though. We know that Peace is more than just an absence of War. Peace is building a world where EVERYONE has access to food, shelter, schooling, and healthcare. PEACE is about building a world where conflict is resolved nonviolently, not with bombs or torture. PEACE is about a LIVING WAGE, not just a minimum wage. We know that working harder TOGETHER will help steer our nation’s voice forward. We can change our foreign policy to reflect a RESPECT AND VALUE for the fruits of all people’s labors. Say “NO!” to NAFTA and CAFTA. SUPPORT PEACE!

With the most recent reports on the projected military budget set to push the cost of the War on Terrorism past the cost of the Vietnam War, WE must speak with a united voice for PEACE, demanding that Congress De-fund Death, De-fund corporate handouts, and FUND LIFE: fund healthcare, fund education, fund clean air, clean water. Demand of your own congressional representative that they fund Life, not Death. Tell them that you heard about a DIFFERENT POLITICAL PARTY that values PEACE not War, LIFE not Death. We support PEACE in THE GREEN PARTY.

INVEST IN PEACE NOW. Invest in BUILDING THE POLITICAL POWER to SHUT DOWN THE SOA. Stop by our table 93. Connect with Greens in your state. JOIN OUR “CARD CARRYING GREEN” PROGRAM INVESTING IN PEACE, Green Party Peace. And go to GP dot ORG to find out more information.

With GREENS in elected offices across our nation and especially in Congress, you can have the leadership necessary to SHUT DOWN THE SCHOOL OF AMERICAS. Thank you.

Marshall is more than halfway through the state of Utah! He is doing well and is grateful for all the support he has received so far.

Unfortunately, since Marshall started planning this walk, the U.S. casualty ratehas risen to over 2,700 in Iraq.  Actually, today they hit 2,800. So,he will add one day of walking in Utah, and one day of walking and meeting withpeople in Washington D.C.  Please check the JoinIn section of the websitefor the RECENT changes to his itinerary. He will walk through St. George andfinish at the Arizona border on November 1st. We really want a big crowdin St. George on the last day.  If you can make it, please come! Ifyou can’t be there, you can still be represented with our balloons forpeace campaign.

:BALLOONS FOR PEACE:

You can be there in spirit.  We want to show Utah how many peoplesupport peace in Iraq. If you send us your name and the city, state, or countrythat you’re from, we will make sure there is a balloon on the last dayof Marshall’s walk to represent you. Those who walk through St. Georgeon November 1st will carry the white balloons.  This will help illustratethe support for a responsible withdrawal from Iraq. The balloons will not bereleased into the air for environmental reasons.  E-mail your name and the city, state, and country that you’re from to balloons@soldierspeace.com. Those of you who have already expressed your support or your desire to walk withMarshall should still e-mail us sowe can make sure there is a balloon to represent you.  Right now, thereare less than 50 balloons reserved.  We wouldlike the number to exceed a minimum of 50

:: HOW TO HELP:

We are still trying to raise enough money to cover the costs of this walk andthe balloons for peace effort.  If you are able, please visit the DONATEsection of the website.

Another way to help is to spread the word.  E-mail your friends and familyabout the walk and the balloonsfor peace campaign.  Contact your localand national media and let them know what is happening in Utah.  We wanteveryone to know about A Soldier’s Peace and about the support Marshallhas encountered for a responsible troop withdrawal throughout his walk.

Finally, for those of you who plan to be in St. George on November 1st, we coulduse your help.  Before the walk begins, we will need people to help withballoons and with the Eyes WideOpen Exhibit.  If you can help, please e-mailus at info@soldierspeace.com

We really appreciate the support we have received so far and we hope to see youin St. George.

Bush says Iraq Violence is effort to thwart U.S. midterm elections

President says increase in violence of Iraqi civil war is an effort to affect our mid-term elections and everything will be just fine if you continue to continue allowing republicans to rule.

Bush is insisting that, although he knows it’s tough for U.S. servicemen and women, we need to “stay the course”.
