Orrin Files for Office

Tom happened to be in the Elections Office yesterday finalizing the process for the Desert Greens Green Party of Utah to become registered and…..

Lo and behold who should appear?
(no, not Santa and his eight tiny reindeer….)–
Orrin Hatch and his entourage this year!

Cute rhyme, huh!

Where Was Orrin?

First I arrived. Then two more people. Then two more. Then two more. All together there were 7 of us. There was no flurry of activity nor were there people headed into the dinner to honor Orrin Hatch for his political service to Utah. I had been told that the event had been publicized in Utah Policy.

We walked around both the Little America and Grand America Hotels and could find no indication of an Orrin Hatch event. One person, Julian Hatch (Green Party of Utah candidate for U.S. Senate) went into the Grand America and Paul went into the Little America Hotels to inquire as to where the Orrin Hatch dinner was. No one had any record of it.

Dang. They must have heard we were coming. And we had some nice homemade nut cakes, too!

We considered roaming the streets and making a video called “Orrin and Me” – in search of Orrin Hatch, but we decided to save our energies, newly made posteres, fliers and nutcakes for tomorrow night’s regular weekly sidewalk vigil instead. Maybe next time.

The only republican-looking person among us, Paul, took off his bike helmet and combed back his hair in preparation to walk inside the Little America Hotel to inquire about the dinner for Orrin Hatch.

Here we are, prepared for our “nutcakes” rally:
Brighide, Pete, Deanna, Eileen, Julian (Paul and Shea had left)

So, where was Orrin?
He was in Utah County, where the Utah County Republicans had their Lincoln Day Dinner, at which Orrin Hatch was present. **That’s** where he was!
(I searched Utah policy and found that the dinner had been publicized once on January 20 for a February 21 dinner. Looks like we were given the wrong date.)

Salt Lake Trib Mentions Julian Hatch

In an obsucre article buried in the Utah section of today’s Salt Lake Tribune, Julian Hatch is mentioned regarding his challenge to U.S. Senator Orrin Hatch. This is the second time this paper has made mention of our Green Party candidate.

Still nothing, that I’ve seen, in the other major newspaper, the http://deseretnews.com/dn”>Deseret News.

D.C. Notebook: Hatch’s vocational memory slips
By Robert Gehrke and Thomas Burr

Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, was full of righteous indignation the other day when, on the Senate floor, he angrily scolded Democrats backing a “windfall tax” on tens of billions in profits Big Oil earned in the past quarter.
As he railed, he tossed in this tidbit: “I used to be in the oil business. I know how hard it is.”
And again: “I have been in this business. I know doggone well what it takes and how much it takes and how much it costs to develop oil and gas.”
And then, when Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D., said Hatch was mistaken about what oil companies do with their profits, Hatch put it most definitively: “No, it wasn’t wrong. I lived in this industry. I understand it.”
Um . . . not precisely.
His official bio mentions he was a lather, janitor, desk attendant at a dormitory, then a lawyer and a senator. No mention of hardscrabble days on the rigs drilling for black gold.
Turns out, “lived in this industry” may have overstated it a tad. His spokesman says the senator did some legal work for a small oil company 30-plus years ago when he was in private practice. He doesn’t remember the name of the oil firm.

The continuing media saga

Oh, I get it now…..here’s the real news:
In today’s Deseret News the top two headlines:

  • Rivalry goes U.’s way
  • Rivalry runs red
and in the Salt Lake Tribune, the top article:
  • Update: Utah survives BYU comeback, wins 41-34 in OT

    ….all about college football!
(as I bang the heel of my hand to my forehead….)

Silly me thinking there was more important news. As Napolean Dynamite would say “Gosh…..idiot!”

  • Meanwhile….

While a room full of citizens appeared for the Julian Hatch for U.S. Senate kick-off campaign press conference, the media was visibly absent.

“Let me ask…..is there any media present?” asked Hatch of the audience. Hatch went on to point out the problems with our media. “This is democracy? We have received international attention while the Deseret News and the Salt Lake Tribune have ignored us.”

Hatch described the points of his campaign and the problems with incumbent Orrin Hatch. He inspired at least one audience member to join the Green Party of Utah.

“I have been a member of the Progressive Democrats here in Utah but I knew something was wrong because I have been participating with organizations to help plan civil disobedience actions. I have found myself not attending [Democrat] meetings or following through with my repsonsibilities. Julian said something tonight that clicked for me: We have to build a viable third party here that will grow and make the Democrats be Democrats. That’s when I knew I have to join the Green Party.”

So while the media may not have attended, the press conference continued and was successful by virtue of the fact that at least one person was pursuaded to take action for change.

    Julian Hatch Press Conference

Tomorrow (Saturday, November 19), Julian Hatch, who is running a campaign for U.S. Senate against incumbent Orrin Hatch, will hold a press conference for the media.

The press conference will be held at Free Speech Zone
2144 South Highland Drive, Suite 130
    Salt Lake City

This press conference is timed to coincide with the film screening of the new Wal-Mart Movie, Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price.

Orrin Hatch articles – Ethics Award Revoked

A telling phenomenon. Notice the oxymoron: Hatch purports to support humanitarian efforts like elder abuse prevention and the hunger problem in America, yet defends the oil industry’s profit making ventures and opposes taxing those profits.

Hatch pitches bill to address elder abuse
Hatch resolution aims at feeding the hungry
Hatch blows his stack over the proposed tax on big oil

An ethics group has revoked an award previously bestowed on Orrin:

    “Electoral Dysfunction…”

This week’s Salt Lake City Weekly
makes a brief mention of Julian Hatch’s challenge to the eternal incumbent Orrin Hatch for the U.S. Senate seat

    Funny….

It’s now been 5 days since the press release went out announcing Julian Hatch’s candidacy.

And still no word of it in the Utah newspapers.

Jen’s Journal mentions it; Ken Sain mentions it; and it’s mentioned on Utah Policy’s Blogwatch today.

Another release went out this morning announcing the press conference this Saturday. There will be more information on this blog regarding that soon.

I wonder if the local papers will pick this up or will keep trying to ignore Hatch v. Hatch?
