    STOP THE WAR FILM SCREENING:
THE GROUND TRUTH~THE HUMAN COST OF WAR

    Sunday, March 18 ~ 2:00pm
Downtown Salt Lake City Library Auditorium
    200 East 400 South

THE GROUND TRUTH stunned filmgoers at the 2006 Sundance and Nantucket Film Festivals. Hailed as “powerful” and “quietly unflinching,” Patricia Foulkrod’s searing documentary feature includes exclusive footage that will stir audiences. The filmmaker’s subjects are patriotic young Americans – ordinary men and women who heeded the call for military service in Iraq – as they experience recruitment and training, combat, homecoming, and the struggle to reintegrate with families and communities. The terrible conflict in Iraq, depicted with ferocious honesty in the film, is a prelude for the even more challenging battles fought by the soldiers returning home ? with personal demons, an uncomprehending public, and an indifferent government. As these battles take shape, each soldier becomes a new kind of hero, bearing witness and giving support to other veterans, and learning to fearlessly wield the most powerful weapon of all – the truth.
(Read more at The Ground Truth) Following the film there will be a roundtable discussion with all present on the film itself, the current state of affairs, and what we as citizens in Utah can do.

  • Surprise, surprise: Now we are “anti-troops”

In the article in today’s Deseret News, Anti-war vote called an anti-troops vote,
Sen. John McCain sought to weaken support for a resolution opposing President Bush’s Iraq war strategy Sunday, saying proponents are intellectually dishonest.

There has been a call issued for the coming weeks to do sit-ins in representative offices. I am sure there will be lots to report on with that action.

Rocky to ‘highlight’ D.C. anti-war rally
Speech of SLC mayor is advertised as an example of how unpopular Bush policies are – even in Utah

Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson speaks at an anti-war… (Ryan Galbraith Tribune file photo )

He has made national news – twice – for protesting President Bush in Salt Lake City. Now, Rocky Anderson will have a national stage to castigate the commander in chief.
Salt Lake City’s mayor will speak at an anti-war rally on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 27, sharing the microphone with the Rev. Jesse Jackson, presidential hopeful Rep. Dennis Kucinich of Ohio and the father of a military officer who refuses to deploy to Iraq.
The demonstration – expected to draw hundreds of thousands in the largest anti-war protest since November’s elections – is being organized by the New York-based United for Peace and Justice in response to Bush’s plan to send 21,500 more U.S. troops to Iraq.
The rally will call on Congress to “end Bush’s war and bring the troops home,” according to organizers.

I’m not listening, la, la, la, la, la (fingers in ears)

That’s Bush and Cheney on the “Surge”. From today’s AP article in the Deseret News:

President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney say they will not budge from sending more U.S. troops to Iraq no matter how much Congress opposes it. “I fully understand they could try to stop me,” Bush said of the Democrat-run Congress. “But I’ve made my decision, and we’re going forward.”

That’s right. Forget Congress. Forget the people that the Congress represents. Forget the fact that more Americans than not now oppose the war and sending any more troops to Iraq.

Defiant bully dictators. That’s what we are dealing with.

A defiant Cheney, meanwhile, said Democrats offered criticism without credible alternatives. He pointedly reminded lawmakers that Bush is commander in chief.
“You cannot run a war by committee,” the vice president said of congressional input.
“Some of my buddies in Texas say, ‘You know, let them fight it out. What business is it of ours?”‘ Bush said of Iraqis. “And that’s a temptation that I know a lot of people feel. But if we do not succeed in Iraq, we will leave behind a Middle East which will endanger America.”

    But wait! It gets better:

Yet when asked if he owes the Iraqi people an apology for botching the management of the war, he said “Not at all.”
“We liberated that country from a tyrant,” Bush said. “I think the Iraqi people owe the American people a huge debt of gratitude.”

The Iraqi people are FAR from liberated and the U.S. presence continues to make the situation worse. Sending more troops is NOT the answer. But what is an equal, if not more so, of a travesty is that the U.S. constitution and democratic way of doing things means nothing here. The Bushites will stop at nothing to get their way.

The soapbox at last night’s rally

At last night’s rally a man in a dark suit carrying a briefcase approached the crowd after crossing the street..

The man walked to the front of the  group and jumped up on a concrete planter.  He told the crowd that he is  Republican city council member in a nearby community and state “If we had more people out here like you, we wouldn’t be IN this mess in Iraq. We’re not over there to fight terrorism. Why are we there? I HAVE NO IDEA! I’m a working-stiff Republican and I’m SICK of this. RAISE SOME HELL!”   He then jumped back down and had to leave to catch his bus.

It was enlightening to see and hear this.  This man stated that he voted for Bush twice and is completely upset over this Iraq debacle.

Utah may still be the reddest state…..but the tide appears to be changing.

Dems will approve request more money for Iraq War

Bush to seek $100 bln more war funds: House report

Senior Democrats, who take control of both houses of Congress next year, have indicated they would support additional funds for U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, even though many want a phased withdrawal to begin in 2007.

In other words they [the Dems] are afraid to oppose their corporate masters.

Of course – THIS is the solution!

Yes, that’s it! DOUBLE our troops in Iraq! Why didn’t I think of that?

Pentagon’s Plan: More US Troops in Iraq
Boosting presence and aid, and an anti-Sadr offensive, carry risks but offer the best path to victory, military officials say
    .

And to make the deal even sweeter, let’s use gambling language to persuade! Yes, it’s a gamble that this just might work!

“I think it is worth trying,” a defense official said. “But you can’t have the rhetoric without the resources. This is a double down” — the gambling term for upping a bet.

This war has always been a gamble. But just who is winning this bet?
