SL County Incumbent Decides Not to Run – My Name mentioned in Articles

Highly respected County Council Member Cort Ashton, the incumbent Republican in the Salt Lake County Race in which I am seeking election, has decided not to seek re-election.
Ashton cites “wearing too many hats” as the reason for not running again. Ashton is the VP of a private title company, has a family, and is active in the LDS church.

There are two other candidates who will compete for the Republican slot, Jeff Allen (who wins the endorsement of Ashton) and former state legislator Russell Cannon. Nate Hendricks is running on the Democrat ticket along with me on the Desert Greens Green Party of Utah ticket.

I have to say this for Mr. Ashton: One of the reasons that made him realize he was too busy, was that
After lengthy County Council meetings, he notes nonpolitical business often forces him to log up to 100 miles in his car. Kudos to Mr. Ashton for being environmentally responsible!

My Campaign

Last week I filed to run for Salt Lake County Council in my district. I decided to run because I have never run for office and I feel that everyone should at least once in their life.

I’ve been thinking a lot about my platform and will be formalizing that more as time progresses, but something really struck me at the panel discussion on Saturday night that Cliff Lyon (the moderator) stated. He communicated to the audience that all people holding and running for public office should be having as their platform their position on the Iraq war and the U.S. administration’s policies – from the Town Recorder up. I was happy to hear Cliff say this because I have been wondering how I would incoporate such into a county race platform. Hearing what he said made it click for me.

I will be thinking about how to incorporate the war issues into my platform over the coming weeks. My campaign website is up and running and will contain more information soon:

The new political arm of the Green Party of Utah has launched its website, Desert Greens.

Parts of it are still under construction, but should be updated often.

Photos of March 18 events

March 18 marked the day in Salt Lake that citizens joined together to demand the U.S. withdrawl from Iraq on this 3rd anniversary of the Invasion and Occupation. A gathering rally was held at Pioneer Park, followed by a march to the City County Building at Washington Square where a program of musicians, poets, actors, and speakers was presented. Later that evening a livley panel discussion was held on the illegality of the Iraq War.

Mainstream and Alterntive news sources are reporting that numbers for rallies worldwide were lower than expected and significantly lower than pre-Iraq Invasion. Also in Salt Lake, the past two rallies have had as keynote speaker, Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson, which was a huge draw for most participants in those rallies.

Local news sources covered the events of yesterday.

The photos below include crowd and sign photos as well as our musicians, actors, speakers, poets, and radical cheerleading squad, Pom Poms Not Bomb Bombs, of which I am a member.

The keynote speaker at the rally was Joan Maymi, of Gold Star Families for Peace, whose nephew was killed in Iraq. She provided a compelling speech about why our troops need to be brought home NOW.

News on yesterday’s anti-war events

Yesterday was quite a day. The weather cooperated, hundreds of people showed up for the rallies in Salt Lake and a lively panel discussion was held on the illegality of the Iraq War to sum up the days activities.

A friend emailed me and told me he had just seen me on Channel 2 news speaking to the audience at the panel discussion, held at Westminster College. Tom and I were quoted in a Deseret News front page article in today’s news.

I’ll be posting photos and other items later today. Here are the items that have appeared in today’s local news:

Green Party correction
The article “Desert Green Party files for ballot access” (Page 2, March 15) is in need of some correction. The Desert Greens Party is the registered Political Party under the state incorporated Green Party of Utah of the Green Party of the United States. The members of the Desert Greens Green Party of Utah are not “former” members. They have always been members of the incorporated Green Party of Utah. A peculiarity in Utah election law forced the party to change its name. The party remains incorporated under the name “Green Party of Utah.”

GPUS Steering Committee

I have blogged previously here about the impeachment proceedings of GPUS steering committee members, the charges of which were issued by four GDIers, one of whom has since defected (or returned) to the Democrats to run for office against Hillary Clinton. The whole ordeal has created a mess and has stalled more important business of the GPUS. Clearly, this move was an intentional one to create chaos and disruption with the intent to bring the GPUS to its demise.

Fortunately, most members states and delegates see through this, insist on adhering to process and prohibit those who are creating these sitatuations from taking over.

Steve Kramer, a GPUS Steering Committee member and one of the unaccused, issued a statement on the impeachment ordeal yesterday.

In his statement, Steve says,
….we must return to the issue of trust. It is my belief, borne of observation, that GDI did not adopt these goals merely to promote a good idea, but because they felt that the GPUS lacked these things. They banded together to accuse the Green Party of not being democratic, of not being independent, of not promoting its own Key Values, and in this case of not following its own Bylaws. They banded together, separately and apart from the body, because they did not trust the Green Party enough to be together and united. They used the language of those who trusted each other against those whom they themselves did not trust.

Greens Filing for Office – a surprise in store

Yesterday Tom and I filed for the offices we will be seeking for the Desert Greens Green Party of Utah in 2006.

When we arrived at the Salt Lake County Clerk’s Office, Ken Larson, Moderator of the Personal Choice Party, was filing for Utah State Senate, District #2.

I filed for Salt Lake County Council, District #5 and Tom filed for Utah State House District #43.
We had to complete a form with our contact information and name as we would like it to appear on the ballot. Mine will be “Deanna L. Taylor” and Tom’s will be “Tom King”.

Then we had to take an oath that we would adhere to all campaign election laws, etc.
For our (ahem)modest filing fees, we received packets of information including when to file financial reports, and huge maps of our districts.

So far for the race I filed, it is just me and the male incumbent, Cortlund G. Ashton, a republican, and the chair of the county council. The race for which Tom also (as of this morning) is the incumbent male republican Wayne Harper and him. When Tom ran in 2004, it was the same scenario on the ballot and Tom obtained 10% of the vote for our district.

The rest of our candidates will file today. I will provide an update. There are some surprises that I am saving for that update.

You can view a list of candidates by going to my “2006 Politics Handbook” on my left sidebar and clicking on the appropriate links.
