Peace Action

My state party has approved me to become a member of the Green Party of the United States Peace Action Committee. I was invited to be a member last week.

The Peace Action Committee (GPAX) of the Green Party of the United States (GPUS) exists to facilitate the planning and achievement of peace and justice action proposals adopted by the Green Party, and to support and promote the Party’s Anti-War candidates and agenda.

I am excited to become part of this nationally organized committee. I’ll provide relevant updates here on activities with this group.

Green Pages

I have been invited to become a member of the Green Pages Editorial Board. This came after I was asked to write a feature for the summer issue of the Green Pages, which I did – read the unedited version here.

Logos – Image is everything (sometimes)

As the Desert Greens Green Party of Utah continues to evolve and shape its identity, we keep playing around the logos. We aren’t going to make a new banner until we have something we really like. We hope to make our next banner out of scraps of fabric, keeping in line with the key values of ecological wisdom and future focus and sustainability. The banners made of vinyl chloride (probably polyvinyl chloride) are just really, really bad for the environment.

At the Live Green Festival yesterday in Salt Lake City, we had a couple of banners with different images on them. We just pasted over the banner we had.

We also had new buttons made:

The State of Utah Elections Office requires a logo for the ballot in the elections. The Desert Greens Green Party of Utah’s Ballot Name is “Desert Greens” and the Ballot Logo is:

Why I’m Green – Continued

Whenever I find myself feeling really uptight about politics and frustrated over Greens seemingly pitting other Greens against each other, I go for a long walk or bike ride if I can – to clear my head and think a little. Tonight was one such occasion. I went for a long bike ride, first to run an errand and then for a ride along the river.

Lately it has become obvious, and very likely, to me that there are greens outside the party to which I belong pitting greens within the party to which I belong against each other. It’s being done subtly and via discreet communications, but it’s happening. Locally….and nationally. Text and words from blogs and emails and other forms of communication are being twisted and sent to other people with commentary that results in uproars. I just can’t believe that people actually spend their time thinking of ways to put so much negativity into the political atmosphere. It’s really, really sad. And worse yet, it’s not green at all to be engaging in this type of activity.

So I have to remind myself why I’m green from time to time.

Since my March 5th why I’m green post, I have learned that I will be a grandmother. This has strengthened my resolve to push green values in my living and my life’s platform for living. Why I’m green has a greater, renewed statement for me. Suddenly my lineage is going to be extended. Suddenly, I feel stronger about the statements I make. Suddenly I realize that I don’t have to put up with petty BS and don’t have to be hesitant to stand up to it. Suddenly I connect with my own grandmother’s courage and resolve. Suddenly I realize more than ever that what I do now really will make a difference – even if it isn’t noticed for several generations.

I remind myself that the values of Grassroots Democracy, Social Justice, Ecological Wisdom, Non-violence, Decentralization, Community-based, Economics, Feminism, Diversity, Responsibility, Future Focus are what I strive for in my life and in my activism. The earth….and my grandchild…..depend on it.

No one can ever take that away from me – regardless of how hard they try.

Who REally Spoiled the 2000 Election?

This is a longer response to “El Critical One” in my post on Why Vote Green

Greens did not cost Al Gore the 2000 election, a whole lot of other folks did.

Update: Senate candidates’ Iraq views clash

If Dave Starr Seely were to become Utah’s next U.S. senator he would vote to immediately end the war in Iraq and bring U.S. troops home.

“It is time to just bow out of it as quickly as possible,” said the Libertarian candidate. “This war has proven to be the biggest terrorist recruiting effort ever.”
Constitution Party candidate Scott Bradley also would vote for a complete troop withdrawal, as would Desert Greens candidate Julian Hatch and Roger Price of the Personal Choice party.
But none of these men are expected to become Utah’s next senator. And the man who will most likely retain that seat could not have a more contrary view.

“It is irresponsible to make any declaration of withdrawal,” said Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch, who is seeking to win his sixth term in office this November. Hatch not only disagrees with these third-party candidates but questioned the courage of those who side with them. “If we just have the guts to continue we will be effective in establishing one of the only representative governments in the Middle
East,” Hatch said.

Earth Day Celebration

Yesterday I spent all day at Earth Jam, where the Desert Greens, the Nationally Affiliated Green Party of Utah, held its Green Earth Fest. Our main activity was a children’s table where children (of all ages!) made bracelets out of cut cardboard tubes, hats, molded things out of clay, made bubbles with a homemade bubble mix, and hula-hooped!

There were two areas – our area (Green Earth Fest)with children’s activities and a stage and the main area where there was another stage and exhibitor booths.

It was beautiful and fun day. We had lots of folks come by our table to get literature, talk and sign up for our mailing list. We had a reduce, reuse, recycle area where we had rummage sale items for donations.

We even got time to speak on the main stage about our party. Here are photos:

Speaking to the crowd – Shane Cutler, a Co-Coordinator with the Desert Greens Green Party of Utah, speaks to the Earth Jam crowd about Earth Day and how it is up to we the people to “clean up our own messes. The government isn’t cleaning up its messes and” his kids will be billed for it. Shane stated that the Green Party wants to change electoral politics so that the government does clean up its messes and so his kids kids won’t have to keep paying for it. Shown with Shane are his children, Michael and Eli.

Hypocrisy of the Elections Office

The Elections Office in Utah never ceases to amaze me. Not the staff that works in the office but, rather, the policies that come forth from that office.

Yesterday I was informed by utahpolicy.com, a really great daily newsletter of the day’s utah politics news, that from now on I could not use “Nationally Affiliated Green Party of Utah” when submitting calendar items. I then noticed that they changed reference to NAGPUT in the calendar listings they had already on their calendar to “Desert Greens”.

Now, I’m not saying that the DG name shouldn’t be used and, in fact, it should – along with the NAGPUT name. For one thing, the NAGPUT Desert Greens has legal rights to the name under Utah Commerce Law. For another, we are affilaited with the Green Party of the United States. And for another, Desert Greens is the registered political party – for election purposes only. All other activities are organized under NAGPUT. Period.

It was made obvious to me that someone complained to utahpolicy.com about them printing our name. I then was told by the person who does their calendar that the elections office recommended that they only print us under “Desert Greens”.

Wait a minute. The Utah Elections Office specifcally told us, in writing, that they would “remain silent” on the name issue. And now they are advising entities and individuals what they should print? That’s hypocrisy!

But it doesn’t surprise me.

In our outreach, we make sure to tell folks that there are two parties using the name Green Party of Utah and that our registered political party is “Desert Greens”. That’s all we say about the two groups. We decided a long time ago that we would advocate who to vote for – not who to vote against.

We will continue to use Desert Greens Nationally Affiliated Green Party of Utah. It’s legal. And it’s the fact. Almost all other organizations publish what we ask them to and choose not to be lured into the middle of this situation, even despite complaints they receive.
