Women in Black Vigil in Tuscon

Today the Green Party of the United States convention participants attended the Tuscon’s Women in Black weekly sidewalk vigil. It was amazing. Tom and I did a roving picket, walkiing around the intersection. There were about 75 people participating. Here are photos:

Deanna’s speech

Tuscon, continued

Today will be a very busy day in Tuscon. Workshops all morning, plenary session all afternoon, interspersed with press conferences. I learned A LOT yesterday about water conservation and initiatives, environmental racism. I presented a workshop on nuclear issues which was videotaped by a delegate in New Jersey.

Today I will be attending the campaign school this morning and then will be part of a panel as a member of the GPUS Peace Action Committee. I will spend about 5 minutes talking about the Stop the Divine Strake Coalition and the work associated with that. I will then attend the plenery session of all the delegates in the GPUS. During that time I will be excused to attend two press conferences:
1pm: All state and local candidates – Kathy Dopp, Desert Greens candidate for Summit County Clerk, will be a featured speaker.
3pm: National Women’s Caucus press conference – I will be a featured speaker.

C-Span is likely to cover these events. I’ll post any links to press coverage I find.

Here is my speech (subject to change):

Still on the road – in Tuscon

After about 4 days of very hot but fun driving from visiting family in Maryland, Tom and I are finally in Tuscon, Arizona for the Green Party of the United States National Committee meeting. I am diligently preparing my nuclear workshop presentation for tomorrow and my speeches for Friday’s press conferences. I’m guessing that there will be coverage on C-Spann of the weekend’s events and will provide that information here.

We are volunteering this evening also in helping to set up the venue for the meeting. It’s fun working with and seeing folks we haven’t seen in a year and also feels good to be able to assist in the set up of the event.

I’ve received word also that there are likely to be some surprises (again) this year. I will be sure to provide updates here as I can and as they occur, complete with photos and detailed descriptions of events and possible ups and downs.

See my account of last year’s event here and here.

I will be a featured speaker at press conference in Tuscon

While I was en route across the country I received a call asking me to be a featured speaker at a national press conference at the Green Party of the United States National Committee Meeting in Tuscon. The press conference will be Friday, July 28 at 3pm and will consist of all Green women candidates.

I have a personal statement on my candidate website regarding women’s issues. I will be formulating my speech around those.

GPUS National Convention News

I will be giving a workshop at the Green Party of the United States National Committee meeting in Tuscon (July 27-30) on July 27, as a member of the GPUS Eco Action Committee. Other committee members will also be giving workshops. Additionally, Kathy Dopp, Desert Greens Green Party of Utah candidate, will be providing a presentation on the Diebold Voting Machine issue. I have provided times and descriptions below.

On Nationalism and Patriotism

“Patriotism is your conviction that this country is superior to all other countries because you were born in it.”
— George Bernard Shaw, author

“The love of one’s country

is a splendid thing.

But why should love

stop at the border?”
–Pablo Casals, musician

“Patriotism is when love of your own people comes first;

nationalism, when hate for people other than your own comes first.”
–Charles de Gaulle, French leader

“Flags are bits of colored cloth that governments use

first to shrink-wrap people’s brains

and then as ceremonial shrouds

to bury the dead.”
–Arundhati Roy, author

“Nationalism is an infantile disease. It is the measles of mankind”.
— Albert Einstein, scientist

“Patriotism is the willingness to kill and be killed for trivial reasons.”
–Bertrand Russell, philosopher

“Patriotism is loving your country always

and your government when it deserves it.”
–Mark Twain, author

“It is not easy to see how the more extreme forms of nationalism can long survive when men have seen the Earth in its true perspective as a single small globe against the stars.”
— Arthur C. Clarke, author

Campaign Financial Disclosure

Campaign Financial Disclosure Reports are available for some races. You can see mine and my contenders’ reports at: Financial reports (Scroll down to SLCO Council #5).

The Salt Lake Tribune published a report on disclosures on June 22nd. The words used in this report were “Here is where the major Salt Lake County candidates rank in campaign contributions” (followed by the numbers of only the Republicans and Democrats running for office.). This listing, in my opinion, gives an unfair advantage to the “major” candidates by publishing their candidacies in the newspaper (free advertising).

Apparently the Utah Republican party is really forking out the bucks for their candidates.

My campaign accepts contributions. Please be sure to read the criteria for accepting contributions (no PACs or corporate contributions) – and thanks in advance.

I plan to make lawn signs and organize “meet and greets” and “honk and waves”, as well as making brochures.
