Protest Intrudes on Bush’s Visit to Maine – Greens There Led the Way!

Greens in Maine participated in a protest during Bush’s visit to Kennebunkport. Bush was there to attend a relative’s wedding on Saturday.

About 1,000 people (the media has documented 700, but colleagues of mine said at least 1,000) were able to get within a half mile of the front doorstep of the residence where Bush was attending the wedding.

What local police estimated were about 700 anti-war demonstrators marched Saturday to within half a mile of the Bush compound before being turned back at a security checkpoint. Called Walker’s Point after the family of former President Bush’s mother, the stone-and-shingle retreat covering a craggy promontory is owned by the current president’s parents.

The protesters sang, chanted, beat drums, waved signs and even played fiddles to call on Bush to bring troops home.

Jacqui Deveneau, my green colleague from Maine and who participated has written:

It was a wondeful day and although the press really played up our intruding on the wedding. It didn’t even effect the wedding. Nor anything he did while here[as usual] But it did take the attention and focus it on the Protest and why we were there and was picked up[if you Google Protest against Bush in Maine] by papers and news reports all over the US! The estimated number was 700, but it was more like 1000, as you all know how they love to choose a lower number. Plus the whole thing was planned in lass then a week! I marched with the Maine Greens Banner and we were listed on the web site as one of the supporters. Pat had to be in Northern Maine at an event and Eder had another engadgement too, but Jonathan Carter who had run for Governor before helped lead the Green folks.

The end of the article mentions Bush’s upcoming travels, including to Salt Lake City on Wednesday.

Complaint Against the GPUS

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote a post on California’s Proposal to the GPUS, regarding Utah’s affiliation with the GPUS. The complaint is framed to be against the GPUS but the intent is to unseat the current Utah delegation by a group of people whose mission it is to disrupt the Green Party of the United States by seating people in Utah who meet their personal agendas. Most folks who have weighed in on this issue on the national discussion lists are not in favor of this proposal as it is clearly biased and does not support an independent. outside investigation, calling instead for an internal investigation. No internal investigation would be unbiased.

The Green Party of Texas has developed and submitted another proposal calling for an outside, independent investigation, which I support:

Camp Casey III – Education

Tom and I participated in some workshops that were offered while we were at Camp Casey. We couldn’t attend all of them, but here are some that we did:

Counter-Recruitment

We were interested in this because we are engaged in counter-recruitment here in Utah and want our campaign to become more active with the Desert Greens Green Party of Utah which has a section on its website with its position on military recruitment in schools, along with opt-out forms for parents to request exemption from the military recruitment clause in the No Child Left Behind Act.

Off to Camp Casey

It’s finally here – the day we are headed to Camp Casey.

We are very excited to be able to take advantage of this opportunity. Not knowing what internet access there is, I may not be blogging until after I return late Monday night. If my cell phone works, I may phone in a post, but no guarantees.

I’ll be bringing with me lots of energy and enthusiasm, encouraging messages from fellow Utah activists, desire to network with other greens and activists and a resolve to be part of a growing movement to demand accountability from the U.S. Adminsitration.

California’s Proposal to the GPUS

Read the background information on this at: Report

Today the California GP put forth a proposal to the GPUS NC to conduct an investigation into the Utah Green Party scenario of 2004.

The proposal is filled with all sorts of erroneous facts. Example:

California states in its proposal background:

“In court the state of UTah found in favor of the GPUT group being the
continuing green party of Utah with the right to use the name.”

This is highly misleading. Anyone who has actually read the court petition knows this is false.
The court case was to have the court accept the change of officers that the GPUT had made so that they would honor the certification of
Cobb as candidate.

Camp Casey 3

We have been in touch via email and phone with folks at Camp Casey and have been preparing for our trip there on Thursday.

Last week Cindy Sheehan spent Friday and Saturday night in the hospital suffering from dehydration, probably as a result of neglect from stress and activity. She has been staying at Willie Nelson’s home in Austin and a hotel in McGregor (outside of Crawford) and has been visiting the peace camp daily. She plans to be at CC3 this weekend.

There are about 100 protestors camped there right now.

Amazingly (or not), George Bush, who always takes a month vacation at his ranch in Crawford (across the road from Camp Casey), cut this year’s vacation short and only spent 10 days there. Hmmmm…..

Code Pink on Thursday (the day we arrive)is planting “Visions of Peace” – a pink garden and memorial that will consist of children’s shoes to symbolize the lives of children lost. This garden will be located at the entrance of CC3.

Arlington West crosses (to mark the lives of soldiers lost) have also been being constructed and erected.

Fellow Green Bill Holloway will be meeting and greeting us at the airport in Austin. He has to remain in Austin for a couple of days but we will travel on to Crawford from there – about a 1 1/2 to 2 hour drive.

Tom is hoping to offer his expertise in electrical work for whatever is needed at the Crawford Peace House and CC3. But whatever is needed, our plan is to work and help as much as we can and are needed.

Desert Greens Candidate Kathy Dopp’s Speech

Kathy Dopp speaks to the media at the Green Party of the United States State and Local Candidates Press Conference in Tucson, Arizona at the GPUS National Committee Meeting, Friday, July 28, 2006. Kathy is the Desert Greens Candidate for Summit County Clerk in Utah.

Desert Greens Candidate’s Radio AD

Here is a radio ad for the campaign of Desert Greens Green Party’s Kathy Dopp for Summit County Clerk.

The Green Party is the only party committed to running a complete slate of peace candidates this Fall.  Because of the Green Party, voters can choose peace when they go to the polls in November.

We’re proud of the work we’ve done.  In order to continue to grow the Green Party we need your help now to pay our bills, fund our full and part-time staff, maintain our presence in the nation’s capital, and continue to work with all of our affiliated parties and candidates around the country to help them win in November.

The Green Summer Pledge Drive goal is to raise $10,000 by the end of Summer (Sept 22). Your financial support is critical.

Adding to My Campaign Platform

I did a lot of thinking over the weekend, while I was camping and hiking, about things I’d like to add to my campaign platform. One idea that came as a result of my hiking experience this weekend is one that I plan to formalize this more for my campaign website:

  • ATV use in recreational areas:
