Dedicating September 11th to Bush

I met and worked with David Swanson this past weekend. Here is his piece published on Truthout yesterday:

Dedicating September 11th to Bush

Camp Democracy

Monday 11 September 2006

George W. Bush is an ordinary human being, in fact a quite stupid one. So are all of his handlers. They are ordinary people, and we have the power, should we choose to use it, to throw them out of our public housing.

This simple fact is hidden from us not just by the media constantly instructing us that we can make no difference, not just by lies connecting the crimes of 9/11 to Iraq, or Iraq or Iran to weapons they do not have, and not just by the deference to power of the devoted neo-conservative minority.

We’re Back

We are back from Camp Democracy and I have lots to post. Six of us did actions at the White House, we made banners that we brought home and we heard a host of speakers, including Arun Ghandi today.

I gained much insight into the continuing anti-war movement, including reinforcement of something I and many others here in Utah have been trying to emphasize to others:

The same messaging strategies are not working. We must change our strategies.

I’ll be posting my exepriences over the next few days.

Cemp Democracy Begins Today

Camp Democracy officially begins today. Camp Democracy is a non-partisan camp for peace, democracy, and the restoration of the rule of law. It is focused not only on ending the war but also on righting injustices here at home and on holding accountable the Bush Administration and Congress.

MOX killed – sign-on letter

Green Commons has asked that this letter be circulated:

Please circulate widely!

Dear Friends,

Tom Clements parting gift to us … he has drafted a great letter for all of the groups to sign on thanking Hobson for KILLING MOX {a blend of uranium and plutonium from left-over nuclear bombs} (I know it’s a premature call, but he has called for cancellation of the program and return of the money, and also is giving money to immobilization which is GREAT).

We’re looking for U.S. and Russian group signatures only, please. We will field suggested changes from this list through end of tomorrow, Friday. We need to be sure of the subcommittee calendar for marking up the appropriations bill, but we are thinking to broadcast widely for signatures through next week and then shoot it to Hobson and Domenici with a media release.

Thanks and NIX MOX y’all!

Send your sign-on to me at atom.girl@mindspring.com

Please circulate widely!

Eliminate Funding for SRS MOX Plant, Support Plutonium Immobilization

Dear Representative Hobson:

We are writing to you to thank you for the decision by the Energy and Water Development Subcommittee which led the full House to eliminate funding for the plutonium fuel (mixed oxide fuel, MOX) plant at the Department of Energy¹s (DOE) Savannah River Site (SRS) in South Carolina. For a host of cost, non-proliferation, and environmental reasons we fully support the decision to terminate the MOX program as a method to deal with surplus weapons plutonium. We also enthusiastically applaud the House¹s recognition that immobilization of plutonium as waste is the preferred disposition path.

California’s Proposal to the GPUS

The Proposal by California to the GPUS on Utah is now in the official discussion phase on the GPUS National Committee discussion list.

There are insconsistencies and myths throughout the proposal. Here are examples:

1. The title of the proposal itself is misleading:

Complaint Against the GPUS, cont’d

A couple of days ago, Texas withdrew its proposal to conduct in independent investigation regarding the Complaint Against the GPUS, leaving the California proposal intact, yet with the “modificaiton” that only one person from each Utah group be included in an “independent investigation”.

Sorry, this still doesn’t fly.

There is NO WAY such an investigation would be “independent” or unbiased.

Word is now that California and Texas are working on a joint proposal. All I can say is that the proposal will not be substantial unless it totally supports a completely independent and unbiased investigation – OUTSIDE of the GPUS. This means that no one connected in any way with the Green Party or its members should be involved. Period.

NC DELEGATES: SUPPORT AN OUTSIDE INVESTIGATION.
VOTE DOWN CALIFORNIA’S PROPOSAL.

Time Magazine

Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson’s August 30 Speechhas gained national attention.

Fellow blooger Cliff Lyon is quoted in the article:

But blogger Cliff Lyon, who volunteered as Anderson’s communications manager in the early days of his administration, believes such speeches are exactly what the voters wanted from Anderson when they put him in office.
“There’s a complete disconnect in Salt Lake. The people who don’t like what Rocky has done think that Rocky’s responsibility is to represent a constituency that he simply does not represent,” Lyon said. “We re-elected Rocky, and we expect Rocky to speak on our behalf.”
Lyon said he encouraged Anderson to begin blogging, and while the mayor was initially resistant, he has begun posting on the Daily Kos, a liberal blog with one of the Internet’s largest followings. Lyon has also started a Web site, http://www.thankyourockyanderson.org, to allow people across the country to express their support for Anderson’s activism.

It’s good to point out that while Rocky did draw a lot of attention to Utah, the success of the event was due to the hard-working people who organized the event. So thanks to EVERYONE, organiers and participants, who helped make this a non-violent, reponsible exercise of free speech.

Today’s Events

The Republicans are trying to take credit for Cindy Sheehan cancelling her trip to Salt Lake today.

All I can say to that as I roll on the floor laughing is:

HAHAHAHAHA!!!!.

As someone who has met Cindy recently, talked to and listened to and hugged her, and also as someone who has worked with some of the organizers for Camp Casey and Camp Democracy, I can verify that Cindy is quite ill and has doctor’s orders to stay put until she is well enough to travel.

(shaking my head in amazement)

Anyway,

COME ONE COME ALL COME EVERYONE!!!

Today is the “big” day. Bring your energy and enthusiasm, your humor and your voice, your children and your friends, and your desire to demand that our administration be accountable to the people.

11am, City County Building at Washington Square, 400 South State Street, Salt Lake City

I’ll be there in my cheerleading role today. I’ll also be distributing flyers for the Upcoming Imagine Peace Festival on September 23rd, as well as flyers for the Desert Greens Green Party with an Impeach Bush and Vote for Peace Theme on them.

Much thanks to Green Jenni for her role in organzing today’s rally.

In today’s newspapers:

Rallies, protests today in Salt Lake: Events center around Bush visit, some welcoming, others critical

City’s a stage as protesters ready for street theater: But all in the polite, Utah-style rhetoric
Sheehan not coming to SLC
