Invest in Peace – Be Green

My Sister Green in Georgia gave a speech at the gates of Ft. Benning, Georgia this past weekend during the annual Close the School of Americas event:

Invest in Peace – Be Green
[This is my speech Sunday, November 19, 2006, at the gates of Ft. Benning at the School of Americas Watch vigil in Columbus, Georgia.]

Thank you!

Like you, I was encouraged by our nation’s recent dramatic rejection of the Bush administration, but in order to SHUT DOWN the School of Americas, we must go further. THE GREEN PARTY’S platform represents the historical imperative for the future because our platform and our positions are based on values and principles of HUMAN RIGHTS AND RESPECT for life.

This election was an ANTI WAR, PRO PEACE message from America. THE GREEN PARTY is the ONLY ANTI WAR, PRO PEACE party in our nation!

The election was a rejection of the War on Terrorism and a rejection of the so-called USA PATRIOT act and a rejection of torture. THE GREEN PARTY has joined You in demanding an END to the War on Terrorism and an END to the USA PATRIOT act. Say “NO” to Torture! SUPPORT PEACE!

Our nation is still finding her voice though. We know that Peace is more than just an absence of War. Peace is building a world where EVERYONE has access to food, shelter, schooling, and healthcare. PEACE is about building a world where conflict is resolved nonviolently, not with bombs or torture. PEACE is about a LIVING WAGE, not just a minimum wage. We know that working harder TOGETHER will help steer our nation’s voice forward. We can change our foreign policy to reflect a RESPECT AND VALUE for the fruits of all people’s labors. Say “NO!” to NAFTA and CAFTA. SUPPORT PEACE!

With the most recent reports on the projected military budget set to push the cost of the War on Terrorism past the cost of the Vietnam War, WE must speak with a united voice for PEACE, demanding that Congress De-fund Death, De-fund corporate handouts, and FUND LIFE: fund healthcare, fund education, fund clean air, clean water. Demand of your own congressional representative that they fund Life, not Death. Tell them that you heard about a DIFFERENT POLITICAL PARTY that values PEACE not War, LIFE not Death. We support PEACE in THE GREEN PARTY.

INVEST IN PEACE NOW. Invest in BUILDING THE POLITICAL POWER to SHUT DOWN THE SOA. Stop by our table 93. Connect with Greens in your state. JOIN OUR “CARD CARRYING GREEN” PROGRAM INVESTING IN PEACE, Green Party Peace. And go to GP dot ORG to find out more information.

With GREENS in elected offices across our nation and especially in Congress, you can have the leadership necessary to SHUT DOWN THE SCHOOL OF AMERICAS. Thank you.

Presidential Campaign

I am very excited to be on the planning and organizing committee for a Green Party of the United States Presidential Candidate hopeful. We had our first organizing meeting last night. I am in the process of setting up a website.

I’ll be providing more details at a later date.

More on Green Candidates in the U.S.

Richmond, California Green City
Councilmember
Gayle McLaughlin was elected Mayor of Richmond yesterday. Richmond is located in northern California, in the East Bay county of Contra Costa.

McLauglin’s victory makes her Mayor of the largest U.S. city yet (pop. 103,000).

Previously the largest city to have a Green Mayor was Santa Monica, CA (pop. 90,000), where (yours truly) Mike Feinstein was Mayor from 2000-2002. However, Feinstein was appointed by the City Council,
whereas McLaughlin was directly elected.

Of the 31 U.S. Greens who have served as Mayors, nine have been directly elected and 22 appointed. Of those directly elected, all had previously come from small cities and towns, with the only city over 7,000 being
Websters Grove, MO (2000 pop. 23,000) where Terry Williams served between 1994-1997.

The first U.S. Green Mayor ever was Kelly Weaverling, Cordova, Alaska (1991-1993), who was directly elected in the aftermath of the Exxon Valdez oil spill, with Weaverling being an important activist involved in the post-spill clean-up.

The 22 that have been appointed have all came from California, where most cities have a City Manager/City Council form of government, with an appointed Mayor who serves various roles, but not as a chief executive,
nor with veto power over the Council.

Some California cities – mostly the larger ones like Los Angeles, Long Beach, Oakland, San Diego and San Francisco – have directly elected ‘strong mayors’ who serve as the chief executives of their cities. In
Richmond’s case, the Mayor is separately elected, but is not a ‘strong’ mayor in the traditional large-city sense.

According to the Richmond city government website:

“The Mayor is a member of the City Council and the chief elected
officer and ceremonial head of the City. The Mayor is also responsible
for:

  • Informing City residents of policies and developments
  • Working with the City Manager on the annual budget
  • Making recommendations to the City Council on policies and programs”

  • 2006 Elections and Greens

The 2006 Elections are now history.
I got a little over 4% in my race (not bad for the first time and little campaigning time). Desert Greens Candidate Kathy Dopp got 23% of her race in Summit County for County Clerk.

Here are the Green Results that I’ve collected so far:

KSL publishes AP report predicting Hatch’s victories 6 minutes after polls close

    What’s up with THIS:

Hatch will Become Utah’s Longest-Serving Senator
    November 7th, 2006 @ 8:06pm

Didnt’ the polls close at 8:00pm? When I check the election results AFTER 8:06pm, Pete Ashdown was ahead by a landslide (at that time).

    Hmmm….

    Election Results

I’m watching the election results come in on these sites:

    State of Utah Elections Office
    or
    KSL TV

It’s exciting watching the numbers change every few minutes.

I’m also in touch with Greens around the country. Just talked to a campaign worker on Pat LaMarche’s campaign for Governor of Maine and she is doing REALLY well.

I’ll be updating either later tonight or early tomorrow a.m.

I’ve also heard some very weird stories about voting in Utah today. My friend Nate should be reporting on One Utah soon about his very bizarre experience.

    1. Would you encourage new communities to incorporate or develop within the county? Why?
I support development of new communities based on a sustainable and “green” building model.

    2. How do you see county government services such as health, recreation, law enforcement and fire protection being delivered in the future? Should they be provided by the county only or by the county and municipalities as is the case now?
Such services would be more efficient if delivered by the county.

    3. What kind of problems do you see in the area of County planning and zoning as more jurisdictions in the county do their own planning and more development occurs in the foothills and canyons?
Not enough emphasis given to energy efficiency standards and environmentally friendly building material standards.

Opponents: Jeff Allen (Republican); Nate Hendricks (Democrat)

    Happy Election Day!

Well, the day has finally come.

I filed to run for office 7 months ago (Salt Lake County Council District 5). I had big plans to get lawn signs, do canvassing, and have coffee house meet and greets.

Unfortunately my plans weren’t realized since I accepted a last minute offered administrative type position (special ed director) in my school and all my time became suddenly diverted.

    Anyway…..

This morning I had some thoughts about elections in the U.S.

  • The election season is too long.
  • There are too many signs. Fences are saturated with them to the point where you can’t read any of them. There are some campaigns whose signs are in sextuplicate on the same corner. What’s up with that? Further, sign ordinances are not enforced.
  • The media is biased, inluding publicly funded media outlets. They don’t cover all candidates.
  • The voting itself is a debacle.

There are definite reforms that are desperately needed in our elections in the U.S. It’s so big and such a mess that I’m not sure what the starting point is to change this.

Given all this, I hope that everyone will vote. It’s important and it’s our right and, in a sense, our obligation.

Happy Voting and Happy Election Day!

  • More Party Biases

In my reading this morning I saw a prevailing theme that stood out in the media – nationall and locally.

I kept reading opening sentences in articles that referred to “THE” two parties – not by name, mind you, but as “THE” two parties.

When I voted the other day, I as expecting candidates to be listed alphabetically by name. they weren’t. “THE” two parties were listed first in each race and then the “other” parties alphabetically by party name. Not very equitable in my opinion.

The two-party system has got to change. It is clearly corporate in nature and not equitable at all, as evidenced by how the media protrays politics in the U.S.
