WalMart’s Bank Plan: Not in Utah, say opponents

WalMart now wants to take over the banking business. Since it’s easy to get a bank charter in Utah, our state seems a good target for the giant corporation.

Not without a fight.

Today’s papers have posted articles on what opponents are doing to keep the richest corporation in the world from invading:
Wal-Mart bank plan slammed at FDIC
Public hearing: Industry warns of dire outcome if Utah plans come to life
(Includes links to other articles)
Wal-Mart foes speak up: Keep to banking issue at hand, Garn tells hearing

More than a dozen organizations testified against Wal-Mart’s application before the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, which has never before held a public hearing on a bank application. The hearing continues today. Many witnesses worried that if the government allowed Wal-Mart to begin banking, even in the limited terms outlined in its application, it would lead to a dangerous combination of commerce and banking by a company known for crushing competitors and driving out small businesses. The Good Guys Being Bought Out – what is this?

As far as corporate buy-outs go, this week and last have been a real bummer for me.

First I heard about the Body Shop selling out to Loreal, which has been attacked in the past by The Body Shop’s founder for employing only “sexy” women for its sales counters.

I have enjoyed buying products from the Body Shop because of the values the corporation embraces:

  • No animal testing on its products
  • Its Support of Community Trade
  • Its Pursuit to Activate Self Esteem
  • Its Defense of Human Rights
  • Its Efforts to Protect Our Planet (such as using recycle packaging, etc.)

    The company’s founder,
    Anita Roddick
, says she didn’t “sell out” and will remain with the company as consultant. But a lot of people are angry and won’t shop at Body Shop anymore.

Then I read on The Vegetarian LJ Community about Tom’s of Maine selling out to Colgate-Palmolive!
There are a number of criticisms and praises of the Colgate-palmolive company. Tom’s of Maine is the toothpaste that I use again because of its company values and natural ingredients. The company has a Statement of Beliefs that has driven its company:
    Statement of Beliefs

  • We believe that both human beings and nature have inherent worth and deserve our respect.
  • We believe in products that are safe, effective, and made of natural ingredients.
  • We believe that our company and our products are unique and worthwhile, and that we can sustain these genuine qualities with an ongoing commitment to innovation and creativity.
  • We believe that we have a responsibility to cultivate the best relationships possible with our coworkers, customers, owners, agents, suppliers, and community.
  • We believe that different people bring different gifts and perspectives to the team and that a strong team is founded on a variety of gifts.
  • We believe in providing employees with a safe and fulfilling work environment and an opportunity to grow and learn.
  • We believe that competence is an essential means of sustaining our values in a competitive marketplace.
  • We believe our company can be financially successful while behaving in a socially responsible and environmentally sensitive manner.
  • We believe that we have an individual and collective accountability to the Company’s beliefs, mission, destiny, and performance goals.

Now with this buy-out, however, I don’t know what will happen to those set of beliefs or the credibility of the product. One article quoted one of the founders as saying that they “wouldn’t be around forever” and wanted to “find a good home for the company.”

What about the employees? Couldn’t it have been arranged to designate the employees as the heirs?

It disappoints me greatly to see these respectable, responsible businesses selling out to larger corporations.

  • U.S. lawmakers pick and choose which human rights violations to target

I have posted here about Google and its handling of the U.S. government’s confrontation in recent months.

Now, lawmakers are coming down on Google and Yahoo for censoring
the words like “democracy” on its China site
. In order to be able to do business with China, Google had to agree to this censorship as dicated by the Chinese government. Now the U.S. government is accusing Google and Yahoo of advocating communism by virtue of this business arrangement and, also by virtue of this business agreement, not promoting political dissidence.

Unlike automakers or consumer products marketers, when companies like Yahoo and Google do business in countries with repressive regimes, they at times are accused of being complicit in supporting censorship and stifling political dissent.

    ????

It’s interesting how our elected officials choose which coporations they are going to target.

Well, U.S. lawmakers – walk the talk. Please do not permit the Caterpillar company to provide equipment to the Israeli government which, in turn, uses the equipment to demolish Palestinian homes, often resulting in serious injuries and deaths.

By choosing not to interfere in the Caterpillar’s business affairs with Israel, you (our lawmakers) are complicit in the human rights violations that are occuring in Palestine.

Garth Brooks, WalMart and Workers Rights

I was asked in an email to share this message about WalMart with friends, so here it is:
WalMart Workers Rights has produced a video that is a pardoy of Garth Brooks’ commitment to sell his music exclusively through WalMart. Attached to the video is a petition you can sign to stop WalMart’s Union Busting Practices. Watch the video at:

    Google

Several folks with Live Journal blogs (Syndicalist and Jen’s Green Journal)have posted the article about Google being subject to search by the Feds.
I posted an article in early January on Google and theTen things Google has found to be true from Google’s corporate page.

We must support businesses like this that aren’t afraid to stand up to Goliath. Google is a model of sound and reponsible business practices with the planet’s interests at heart. I don’t know what is so threateing and scary about that, but kudos to Google for not buckling under this pressure.

Maryland creates law to require Walmart to increase health care coverage

    Sometimes, Davey wins.

An article published on Common Dreams announces a law passed by Maryland legislators that targets Wal-Mart and requires an increas in health care coverage by companies with more than 10,000 employees. This law requires these companies to spend at least 8 percent of their payrolls on employee health benefits.

This “fair share” law is in the works in about 30 other states and the passage of such a law in Maryland has given inspiration to legislators across the country.
In each state proposal, affected companies that don’t meet the payment threshold would have to pay the difference into a state fund to assist the uninsured.

Maryland’s passage of this law came after its Republican Governor, Bog Ehrlich, issued a veto.

    A post-industrial Christmas Carol

David Rovics sent out this message last week:

I haven’t recorded it yet, but I thought I’d send on this lyric since it’s so very in season. Hope to see you on the road and in the streets!

    Wal-Mart
    David Rovics

There’s a thousand acres becoming clear
Cut down the forest, the big one’s here
Cover the ground with a mass of tar
Make sure there’s room for every car
One floor half mile massive sprawl
    One store wonder super mall
It’s spreading out far and wide
    Taking over the countryside
Say goodbye to your forests, they’re going down
    Wal-Mart is coming to town

    Goliath on the Prowl

Walmart is eyeing a community south of Salt Lake – Saratoga Springs. The artile headline in today’s Deseret News reads:
Wal-Mart eyes Saratoga:Officials see a need in north Utah County city

See a need? The mayor sees this possiblity as “a great thing”.

Meanwhile, the giant corporation has hired more lobbyists this week to ramp up its opposition to a groundbreaking bill that would force the retail giant to offer better benefits, a step that could be replicated in state houses across the nation next year.
