I pledge allegiance to all life
in its interdependent diversity;
and to the Planet upon which it exists;
one World, under the sky, undividable
with harmony and balance for all. ~ Tom King, 2001, for Blue Sky Institute -

The People at Camp Casey
We all know that it’s the people. And if it weren’t, things wouldn’t happen like Camp Casey. Here are some photos of some of the wonderful folks behind the operation of Camp Casey. We made connections and bonds that will last.
(Note: This is not inclusive of everyone we met and who volunteer. This includes the photos we were able to get.)

The Crawford Peace House
The Crawford Peace House The Crawford Peace House was founded in 2003, as the war was getting started. It has been the host, sponsor or coordinator of many events and actions prior to when Cindy Sheehan came to town. It was co-founded by Johnny Wolf and Hadi Jawad.
The Peace House is a place where folks can gather and organize. There is also a labyrinth and meditative back yard with garden space. Folks at the Peace House provide meals for Camp Casey. The Crawford Peace House is a wonderful place – please visit it when you are in Crawford.

Camp Casey III
My experience at Camp Casey last weekend is hard to put into words. I will be posting photos later today and an account of my experiences there. Tom and I have decided to go to Camp Democracy for a few days next month in DC (which Camp Casey transforms into for September).
One thing that Cindy Sheehan said to us all while we were there is that while it is great and wonderful to be at Camp Casey, we need to take Camp Casey with us to our homes. She encouraged us to “take some of Camp Casey home” with us – dirt, rocks, etc. – and spread it all over the world.
We have done just that. We brought home with us a rock as a concrete reminder of our experiences there so that we will spread the energy, knowledge, and wealth of exepereince within our community here in Utah.
Here are the welcome signs in Crawford:
Off to Camp Casey
It’s finally here – the day we are headed to Camp Casey.
We are very excited to be able to take advantage of this opportunity. Not knowing what internet access there is, I may not be blogging until after I return late Monday night. If my cell phone works, I may phone in a post, but no guarantees.
I’ll be bringing with me lots of energy and enthusiasm, encouraging messages from fellow Utah activists, desire to network with other greens and activists and a resolve to be part of a growing movement to demand accountability from the U.S. Adminsitration.
Cindy Sheehan in Utah’s News
Both of today’s major Utah papers have articles on their front pages about Cindy Sheehan coming to Salt Lake during George Bush’s visit later this month.
Salt Lake Tribune: Anti-war activist Sheehan to badger Bush in Salt Lake
Deseret News: Sheehan to join Rocky in anti-Bush rally
Blogger references our trip to Camp Casey
Out of Context: The Tribune’s political writers’ blog. writes about the announcement of my trip to Camp Casey this weekend.
Of course this blogger did not reference ALL of the media release – like the part that says that Bush refuses to meet with Sheehan and why CC is still camped where it is and what will happen to CC on Sept 2 (it will become “Camp Democracy” and move to DC).
It appears to me that this bloggger is attempting to discredit not only me and Tom and our campaigns, but also Camp Casey and Cindy Sheehan. But maybe not. It might just be my perception. At any rate I’m thankful that he called attention to this.
Two Utah political hopefuls say they’ll go to Crawford, Texas,
We not only say, we are.
Taylor and King indicated in their statements their trip is less about Bush than Sheehan. King called her “one of America’s most courageous and dedicated contemporary figures.” Taylor called her “an inspiration to women everywhere.”
Not at all. We support Sheehan because of her unending commitment to stand up to the Bush Regime. We are traveling the CC to be part of the movement that demands accountabiltity of the U.S. Administration. Women are not empowered in this country to take a stand. Sheehan has inspired women all over our country to speak out. She is courageious and dedicated.
What this blogger probably doesn’t know is how brave and courageous the two candidates he mentions actually have been in the past as well, not to mention their constant vigiling, organzing, and outspokenness against the Bush Regime.
I’m sure if this SLTribune staff person does their research, all sorts of articles will be found on Tom King and Deanna Taylor in Utah’s anti-war movement.
(See comment to the blog entry at: http://blogs.sltrib.com/utahpolitics/2006/08/texas-road-trip.htm)
I’m sure that if reporters would have contacted us, as KCPW radio did, they would have found out more information about our stance against the Bush Regime Policies that could have added even more substance to any publication of information from the press release that was sent out.
I’d like to also point out that the temperature in Crawford is in the 100’s with high humidity. We aren’t going to be hanging out with celebrities in air conditioned accomodations. We aren’t staying in a hotel. We aren’t going to be staying in a house. We will be sleeping in our tent. We will be cooking our meals on a backpacking cookstove. We will be networking with activists from around the country who have a mission and a purpose. We will be camping and working to help the operation of the camp
which is set up to demand accountability from George Bush and to bring our troops home
Cindy Sheehan to Speak at August 30 Bush Protest
I just heard from a fellow activist that Cindy Sheehan will be speaking at the August 30 Bush protest in Salt Lake City.
A member of the organizing commitee has been in communication with Cindy’s sister to arrange this. DeDe (Cindy’s Sister) has been an integral part of the initiation of the Stop the Divine Strake Coalition. I have been priveleged to work with her on this project. She is active with Gold Star Families for Peace, of which Sheehan is a co-founder.
Cindy has so many wonderful messages. You can read them at the Gold Star Families for Peace website. As a mother of two “draft-age” boys, a teacher, and an outspoken opponent of the military recruiting clause in the No Child Left Behind Act, Cindy’s words mean so much to me.
Thanks Cindy, DeDe and everyone behind the Camp Casey Peace Movement.
Camp Casey 3
We have been in touch via email and phone with folks at Camp Casey and have been preparing for our trip there on Thursday.
Last week Cindy Sheehan spent Friday and Saturday night in the hospital suffering from dehydration, probably as a result of neglect from stress and activity. She has been staying at Willie Nelson’s home in Austin and a hotel in McGregor (outside of Crawford) and has been visiting the peace camp daily. She plans to be at CC3 this weekend.
There are about 100 protestors camped there right now.
Amazingly (or not), George Bush, who always takes a month vacation at his ranch in Crawford (across the road from Camp Casey), cut this year’s vacation short and only spent 10 days there. Hmmmm…..
Code Pink on Thursday (the day we arrive)is planting “Visions of Peace” – a pink garden and memorial that will consist of children’s shoes to symbolize the lives of children lost. This garden will be located at the entrance of CC3.
Arlington West crosses (to mark the lives of soldiers lost) have also been being constructed and erected.
Fellow Green Bill Holloway will be meeting and greeting us at the airport in Austin. He has to remain in Austin for a couple of days but we will travel on to Crawford from there – about a 1 1/2 to 2 hour drive.
Tom is hoping to offer his expertise in electrical work for whatever is needed at the Crawford Peace House and CC3. But whatever is needed, our plan is to work and help as much as we can and are needed.
GOING TO CAMP CASEY!
Yes, it’s true!
Camp Casey has opened again this week in Crawford, Texas, to continue a constant vigil near George W. Bush’s ranch. It will be open until September 2nd when it will then become Camp Democracy in Washington DC.
Tom and I are going to go there from on August 17 and will return August 21. We will be meeting Bill Holloway, Texas Green Party of the United States delegate and fellow Green Party Peace Action Committee member. Bill is blogging about his experiences at Camp Casey on his blog, Oliver’s Arrow.
We will be working at the Crawford “Peace House” there and in the Green Party tent. Bill referred to “Rena” working there, a Texas Green. Is this the same Rena from the Green Commons?
One thing we may be doing is helping some folks there build wooden crosses as memorial
headstones of fallen US soldiers. I’m sure there will be other work to do – we’ll be ready to pitch in and do whatever needs to be done.
Most of all we are looking forward to meeting new people and being part of Camp Casey for a few days. I’ll be sure to take lots of photos (as usual) and post them.
