On Nationalism and Patriotism

“Patriotism is your conviction that this country is superior to all other countries because you were born in it.”
— George Bernard Shaw, author

“The love of one’s country

is a splendid thing.

But why should love

stop at the border?”
–Pablo Casals, musician

“Patriotism is when love of your own people comes first;

nationalism, when hate for people other than your own comes first.”
–Charles de Gaulle, French leader

“Flags are bits of colored cloth that governments use

first to shrink-wrap people’s brains

and then as ceremonial shrouds

to bury the dead.”
–Arundhati Roy, author

“Nationalism is an infantile disease. It is the measles of mankind”.
— Albert Einstein, scientist

“Patriotism is the willingness to kill and be killed for trivial reasons.”
–Bertrand Russell, philosopher

“Patriotism is loving your country always

and your government when it deserves it.”
–Mark Twain, author

“It is not easy to see how the more extreme forms of nationalism can long survive when men have seen the Earth in its true perspective as a single small globe against the stars.”
— Arthur C. Clarke, author

My first campaign disclosure report

The first campaign disclosure report for my campaign is due tomorrow. I have completed the forms and am awaiting a couple of minor details before submitting the papers.

Since filing in March I have received $249.93 in donations ($153.23 was for my filing fees and is documented as a loan from me). I have incurred $182.63 in expenses – for filing fees and setting up the required campaign bank account.

One of the things I do not like about completing this report is that if one does not have the capacity to complete acrobat files online, you have to print it and either mail it in or take it in, which wastes resources (paper, stamps, gas, etc.)

The state of Utah is way ahead in that game – candidates can complete and submite their forms online.

There’s another small, albeit important, issue for my platform. Get more online resources available for Salt Lake County candidates and citizens when conducting county government business.

Walking the Talk

When I opened my campaign account on Friday I was asked if I wanted to order checks. My response: “No”. I am pretty sure that the checks obtained from my credit union are not recylced. Yesterday I ordered checks for my campaign treasury from Check Gallery, a company I have been using for years. Their checks are recycled. They have over 700 designs and many of the checks are for various organizations. I really like the NOW checks (National Organization of Women). They have several sets:

  • NOW PRO CHOICE
  • NOW DIVERSITY
  • NOW CLASSIC CONSCIENCE
  • NOW EQUALITY
  • NOW STOP DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
  • and NOW (including “Fight the Radical Right”)

There are a number of other socially repsonsible organzations with this service.

After about an hour of trying to decide, I finally went with a “southwest art” design and an earth logo in the upper left corner.

At any rate, although I wanted green checks or checks with a sunflower logo (the Green Party symbol), my responsibility for having recycled checks outweighed the design I wanted.

Next I plan to make business cards out of recycled paper – preferrably old money paper.

Greens Filing for Office – a surprise in store

Yesterday Tom and I filed for the offices we will be seeking for the Desert Greens Green Party of Utah in 2006.

When we arrived at the Salt Lake County Clerk’s Office, Ken Larson, Moderator of the Personal Choice Party, was filing for Utah State Senate, District #2.

I filed for Salt Lake County Council, District #5 and Tom filed for Utah State House District #43.
We had to complete a form with our contact information and name as we would like it to appear on the ballot. Mine will be “Deanna L. Taylor” and Tom’s will be “Tom King”.

Then we had to take an oath that we would adhere to all campaign election laws, etc.
For our (ahem)modest filing fees, we received packets of information including when to file financial reports, and huge maps of our districts.

So far for the race I filed, it is just me and the male incumbent, Cortlund G. Ashton, a republican, and the chair of the county council. The race for which Tom also (as of this morning) is the incumbent male republican Wayne Harper and him. When Tom ran in 2004, it was the same scenario on the ballot and Tom obtained 10% of the vote for our district.

The rest of our candidates will file today. I will provide an update. There are some surprises that I am saving for that update.

You can view a list of candidates by going to my “2006 Politics Handbook” on my left sidebar and clicking on the appropriate links.
