A Republican Candidate for the Sixth District U.S. House seat in Minnesota told an audience at a church that wives must be subveriant to their husbands, according to what God told her. Up until this point, Michel Bachmann had presented herself as a moderate tax-cutter to voters.

Amy Goodman, host of Democracy Now! did the show today on Green Politics. Featured on the show were Howie Hawkins, Green candidate for US Senate in New York, and Michael Berg, running for the one House seat in Delaware.
Last night the school where Tom and I work, City Academy, had its grand opening to celebrate our new downtown location. FOX 13 news was there and had a piece on us at 9pm last night (it’s mentioned on their website).

New home for S.L. charter school
Eleventh-grader Peter Clyde celebrates after cutting the ribbon Tuesday at a ceremony for the new downtown location of City Academy at 555 E. 200 South, Salt Lake City. The academy, one of Utah’s oldest charter schools, serves more than 150 students in grades 7-12. It was established in 1999.
It seems that a common response I get about using the train is how much time it takes and that peoples’ family time is more important than spending time on the train, thus the excuse for using their cars to commute.
Today’s Deseret News has a feature on how much time people spend in their cars to commute to and from work.
The study by The Road Information Program (TRIP – a nonprofit organization that studies roads and congestion in several states.) shows that Utah motorists are wasting up to 76 hours and 56 gallons of fuel annually, just sitting in traffic. And depending what roads you use, the numbers go even higher. Traffic congestion costs Utah drivers as much as $1,275 a year in wasted time and fuel.
Over the past few months, TRIP looked at data from state and federal agencies, as well as research and planning groups, to complete the study that lists the 25 most-congested roads in Utah. For each of those roads, the study estimated how much time and money people waste while stuck in traffic.
“Commuters are losing a lot of time and wasting money because of growing traffic congestion,” said Frank Moretti, spokesman for TRIP, a transportation-research group based in Washington, D.C.
Utah County had 14 of the 25 most congested roads, while Salt Lake County had eight of them, according to the study.
The most expensive route to drive is I-15 in Utah County, from Orem’s University Parkway to 1600 North, the study showed. Motorists using that route spend $1,275 each year on traffic delays. Drivers there lose about 76 hours of time annually in traffic and waste about 56 gallons of fuel.

Looks like Google’s been watching Fox News — its new Google NetPAC, launched last month, made contributions to three Republicans congressional candidates, according to the San Jose Mercury News. The Merc’s Frank Davies reports $1,000 contributions to each of Reps. Heather Wilson of New Mexico, Deborah Pryce of Ohio, and James Sensenbrenner, head of the House Judiciary Committee and sometime gavel-wielding control freak. At least two of the candidates, Wilson and Sensenbrenner, have porfolios that implicate the use and regulation of the Internet.
Three of Google’s new lobbyists were drawn from Republican rankss: Jamie Brown, former legislative liaison in the Bush administration, and former GOP senators Connie Mack and Dan Coats (Davies does not mention what proportion of Google’s lobbying staff that comprises). According to Davies, in the past Google executives have donated “overwhelmingly to Democrats and liberal groups” (he also notes that Google employees skew Democratic). Google lobbyist Alan Davidson says PAC donations are intended for the building of “long-term relationships with policy-makers” supported “across party lines.” To that end, Google also donated $1,000 each to two Democrats candidates, Rep. Anna Eshoo* of Palo Alto (where Google HQ is located) and Sen. Debbie Stabenow of Michigan. More here.
